The only thing that make the genesis a hit in the west was sports games, which eventually made their way onto snes as well. The entire western gaming industry of the 90s was carried by sports and normalfags. Ea sports, nba jam and then a few normalfag hits like mortal kombat. Sonic 1 and 2 were both bundled games for the peak years and they got some play as well, but otherwise it was a sportsball console.Playstation was the go-to sports console for the next gen.
