>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 6th Gen Consoles and older. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Do people read this? Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

Because you have brain rot from whining about AI too long.

Details and resolution are too good for AI slop

Out of curiosity, made the mistake of going on the r/crtgaming subreddit to check out some plebbitor setups and the current top post is a hundred faggots crying about some discord troon who is a pedophile furry kek you just can't make this shit up

I had an old Win10 PC lying around, so I thought I'd trying hooking it up to my CRT. I bought an HDMI>AV adapter, installed some emulators and, amazingly, it works really well. I thought input lag was going to be a killer, but even with vsync enabled this shit is butter smooth which blows my mind. I've been playing Sonic Adventure DX and Halo CE on here the last couple of days, and it feels great. The resolution is completely fucked on the desktop (I guess I need to configure a custom res for that since Win10 natively only supports 800x600 and above), but when games boot up on emu in native res they look inseparable from a console.

Bros... I don't know if I can go back after this. Something about it feels so right despite being so wrong. There's a delightfully greasy feeling to using a mouse and keyboard with a modern PC to boot up an emulator on a CRT TV. It feels like I cracked the code.

>Win10 natively only supports 800x600 and above
640x480 shows up for me. It must be your GPU or converter EDID not letting you go lower. Customer Resolution Utility or just your GPU software will probably let you.
>>
>>12010760
> It must be your GPU or converter EDID not letting you go lower
Well, that's part of the issue: I don't have a GPU, it's just running off integrated graphics (which is fine since I'll never play anything demanding enough to need more). I think I can download Intel command center and force it into 640x480 though.
>>
I heard that 9” CRTs were really bad and you shouldn’t use them, even if they’re on a desk or somewhere close to the eyes. Can someone confirm that they’re worse than an LCD?
>>
>>12010760
>>12010756
Depending on the adapter, all resolutions could be a lie.
I have one that basically only display 1280x720 and do bilinear scaling on all other resolutions.
But if it is actually setting other resolutions you can check both trying 1280x960 and these super resolution things.

I'm doing the same thing and I'm quite content. I got a $9 adapter on amazon, figuring I'd get a "real one" later, but this one works great.
>>
>>12010891
It's not that they're bad by design, but those kinds of CRTs tend to be low range crap with bad image quality in general, unless they're PVMs.
>>
>>12011189
Same, I paid about $14 for one off walmart.com and I can't believe it's not total shit. I was expecting noticeable delay but it's unironically more responsive than emulating on my LCD with regular HDMI. The freedom of PC emulation with the juiciness of a CRT TV is hard to beat.

No. Do keep things /vr/.

Because it's just as soulless and staged.

Moving a couple states over soon. How the hell do I make sure a CRT survives?
>>
>>12011335
that's called "photography", retard. it's like complaining that the positioning of things in a painting don't feel candid.
>>
>>12011415
Bad photography, sure. If it was competently staged or not soulless I wouldn't complain.
>>
>>12011189
These are fine for PS2 and up, but since these adapters only output 480i older games won't look completely authentic. It's the cheapest and easiest way to feed something into a regular TV. They can be as cheap as 1-2$ on Chinese sites.

Is there any way to quiet a noisy flyback without replacing it? I’m sure it’s the source since it’s the classic 15 kHz whine. It measures around 90 dB near the set. It’s noticeably louder than any of my other CRTs and only settles a little after running. I’ve read about RTV silicone but don’t know where it should be applied, and the ferrite core looks sealed, so the toothpick trick isn’t possible. The TV (Sony Trinitron KV-25SF1) works fine otherwise.
>inb4 all CRTs have noise
I understand that, but this set is way louder than the others I’ve owned.

>>
The real problem with 480i is that it requires a blur filter which your tv provides otherwise it will make you sick to look at it. It is not needed when displaying progressive images so 240p 15khz stuff looks way sharper, especially on a well calibrated pretty fresh tv. So yes, use crtemudriver/groovymame and other standalones, and you might as well get retroarch setup as well and have both. Also you need a brooks board, but really its an insane rabbit hole, but anything is better than using v sync.

Well, I’ll start hunting for a replacement part. But is it still fine to operate in the meantime since there are no other symptoms besides the louder whine? The frequency itself is normal.

Lmao, I don't. It's possible the previous owner(s) did, but doesn't smell like it. I have already given it a blow job with compressed air but a lot of dust still remains. Need to give it a brushing.

Finally got a Mister. Using an active y/c adapter - but apparently a shit one without a Luma trap (or a good one at least) so if you just plug composite into something you get rainbow shimmer over the entire screen - BUT if you plug Svideo into another input separate from the one you're using for composite it cleans the entire image up? I do not understand how that works

Svideo output in this image - looks super sharp to the eye, but too sharp for me on PS1.

Switched over to the composite input and it's noticeably got a bit of blurryness to it but no rainbowing artifacts or dot crawl. Probably the best composite output I've seen.
>>
>>12015570
>>12015576
s-video looks better to me for FF7 but composite looks better for games with heavy dithering. That does look like shit on s-video zoomed in that close but it's not so ridiculously sharp when you are a few feet away at least. The colors are a bit washed out on composite

>>
>>12015570
>>12015576
S-Video looks better

I'll die on this hill, composite only feels right for 480i content. 240p needs sharper output to look nice.
>But muh checkerboard patters
Present in arcade and computer games with crystal clear image output
>But muh sonic waterfalls and other transparencies effects
Literally 0,0000001% of every game that features them.

Use S-Video/RGB and stop the composhit meme at once (except for 480i).
>>
>>12018471
wut? higher quality is pretty much mandatory for higher resolution interlaced games. There is 1/4 of the detail at 240p so no need to be sharp
>>
>>12018475
6th gen games look better on composite, shrimple as. I don't like the look of "sharp" interlaced games
>>
>>12018478
You have it backwards. 240p stuff looks fine on composite or even RF but 6th gen stuff really improves with component cables.
>>
>>12018480
Wrong.
>>
>>12018659
What you are saying is retarded. Why would you need a sharper image for a less detailed resolution? Sharper is better to display more detail and unnecessary for less detail.

That's why you play the SNES version.
