After watching some videos I can conclude System Shock 1 is the first metroidvania/search action.
>>12011214>search actionAbsolutely soulless newspeak
>>12011230It’s Japanese
How did we get to this. I am not even sure if this is a bait anymore. Is this post-irony? Is getting /v/ style shitposts going to be the new norm for /vr/? What's next - posts with "choose you're retro waifu", or "let's talk about your favourite retro GTA 5 moment"?
>>12011239nah i'm pretty sure "search" and "action" are english words
>>12011240No idea. It had been downhill for quite a while already but /v/tard-style posting has really kicked into gear since the breach. I need another weather channel thread soon.
>>12011214retard
>>12011240>Gen 6 is totally retro guys>There's no harm in letting it in>It's fine the definition of retro PC games is so broad that 7th gen games are able to sneak in the boardThis is why Gen 5 should be the hard cut off date
>>12011214it's actually a mid ultimaunderworldlike
>>12011214It is it's own game.How about that?
Is Harvester "search action"?
>The firstBesides... you know, the 2 or 3 Metroid games that existed at the time, and god know what other similar games existed between that time and even prior.
>>12011214>metroidvaniaThanks for reminding me to filter that word.
You revisit levels a lot but usually progress is blocked by keys/codes or story events rather than abilities so it doesn't quite fit. Other than the rocket boots I can't remember any obstacles that require upgrades other than minor stuff like the meme jump with skates in the storage level.
>>12011214System Shock is actually the first audiolog walking-sim FPS
what is the real difference between a game being a metroidvania and just being an adventure game though?
>>12011214>'e cawls it a 'met-rooyyyd-vayyy-nee-yahhh', 'n not a 'rooty dooty scouty shooty'!
>>12013250I think there's a difference between Monkey Island and Metroid
I got filtered again and again for years but last Sunday, it finally clicked. Apologies /vr/, I've been shitting on this for ages. Truth is, and you know it, like all the other plebs I got filtered by the controls and the interface. And like all the other plebs, I blamed the game. But no longer no more, that shit is yesteranon. All it took was reading the manual. Finally, I have seen the light. System Shock rules.
>>12013454Not when you think about it. The only real difference is the setting. Nearly identical gameplay, puzzles, problem-solving, etc.
>>12013250You don't gain new abilities, powers, or player levels in an adventure game.
>>12014567It is it's own game. It's best to play it in a the right setting. Which is different for everyone. For me it's playing it on a period correct PC, a big CRT monitor, and a real SoundCanvas.
>>12011917I'd rather gen 5+ for /v2k/

>>12014567Welcome to the Church of RTFM, anon. Spread the good word.
>>12015564What a retarded comment.
>>12011214I have been pointing out that System Shock 1 is actually a Willyvania not an immersive sim (which is not even a real genre) for well over 15 years. I can't tell you what to search in the archive to find it, but I was literally saying this on /v/ in 2008 after playing the old System Shock Portable .exe that some guy hacked together.Even dumber are the retards that call SS1 an "FPS RPG" despite it having literally no RPG elements at all.
>>12013250Backtracking to access previously closed areas with new power ups
>>12011239This might shock you but they just call Metroid an action game in Japan.
>>12015693i accept your concession.
>>12012079Harvester - 1996System Shock - 1994CoK - 1993Beaten to the punch by nips again
>>12015972>beaten to the punch by nips again>againI have no idea what you're implying here, but if you're implying either:>they invented point and clicksor>they invented search actionYou're wrong on both accounts. Zork predates Cosmology of Kyoto.
>>12017692brother, you need your mentally ill spammer detector adjusted. there's no implication or point, it's just nonsense and three titles that have threads going right now being randomly applied.
>>12015972what's CoK?
>>12018669It's an old forgotten name no one remembers from Japan which recently had a resurgence thanks to an e-celeb making zoomers aware of its existence pretending it deserved to be some magnum opus masterpiece that redefined gaming.

Surely the first Metroidvania is Zelda.
