Did any of you guys ever play this game? It was really good. It was a really big hit back in the days in terms of online games, especially since the first game of the series came out along with the internet adapter for the ps2, so it was a first online game for many people in a time when online gaming was new. There was some really fun glitches you could do. Jumping around the map in a launch form to get into areas you typically couldn't, you clip through stairs through different means, and there was even this one glitch that if done properly, you clear out a whole lobby cause you convince the game that you have an automatic RPG and the lobby can't handle that much going on at once and everyone gets kicked out. There was even this thing that people did and I tried it myself, it was a lag switch. Basically, you cut open an ethernet cord, split the orange and green cable iirc and attach them to a light switch. Back then, it would give you a bit of advantage and it helped to do certain glitches. They even host custom servers for it and it can be played through an emulator or hacked ps2 to this day. You can also share other retro games you've played online when online gaming first started.
>big hitThat game is THE reason MLG even exists.I only really played the singleplayer though. Socom singleplayer is really good, just hard as balls (except for 3 but that was the casualization effect)As for retro games online, shit, does Runescape count? Not the OG but still Old School.
>>12011840I played the absolute shit out of SOCOM I and II online back when they came out. Had a buddy bring over his PS2 and CRT and we would screen scum when one of us died to point out where the enemies wereEach was an fucking blast for a year or so, but eventually gameshark codes broke into the online game. I was one of the early gameshark users, used to make usernames like "Cannot Be Killed" and troll the fuck out of lobbies
>>12011840There was a map object in the "Crossroads" map (a ceramic pot) that if you jumped on top of, it would crash everyone's game that never got patched I think. Used to hop on that every once in a while
>>12011840>make a game about navy seals>there's no homosexual hazing involvedunrealistic. dropped.
>>12012169i had no idea it was the reason for MLG, that's pretty cool. It was a really good game so I'm not surprised. And the tactical gameplay and combat, all of it was really solid especially for a first online shooter for the generation of consoles to have online access. I just remembered that they'd even host clan battles on gamebattles.net (which searching up, shows that activision shut it down apparently?)I had fun with the single player. That's how you would unlock skins. I liked how you could command your squad with the headset they provided if you knew the proper voice commands. >runescapesure, I never played it but I knew a few people that did.>>12012567fuck yea. I had a similar situation with a friend and we'd had our t.v's close by and do the same thing. I never got to try actual cheats for the online game, just whatever natural in game glitches that weren't already patched.>>12012572yea I used to hide in those big containers in frost bite and just shoot people with a supressed m4. i'd usually get kicked from the lobby but whatever. that's one thing I miss that old games had, you could vote to kick someone out of the lobby. you don't see that in modern online games anymore. there'd be clans who would have code words if you played shitty and they'd just start voting you out lol worst feeling ever. >>12012579lmao yea i've seen that dildo gag video on /wsg/. weird shit.
>Teammates watching after they get killed vote to kick you then remove vote to let you know someone is behind you>Every once in a while someone (sometimes me) spam the vote unvote even when nobody is there and end up costing their own team the game>Last guy alive has a meltdown on the mic asking who tf was doing that
>>12012787lmao, classic socom.
>lag switchno skills
>>12011840Never heard of it
>>12011840Never got around it since I didn't own a PS2 but I like games like this - GR, FSW. I'd emulate it if surround sound worked on PCSX2
>>12011840I have only played 1 and 3
>>12016236you're missing out if you're looking for a pretty sweet squad based tactical single player campaign and a genre defining 3rd person online shooter.>>12016428no idea what GR is but FSW looks like something similar. >>120168352 fixed all the issues of 1 and 3 introduced too much new stuff that detracted from the core online gameplay experience.
>>12016849Having never played 2 it sounds like socom had the same progression as timesplitters>1Novel, but unpolished>2 Perfection>3Pretty good but they crammed vehicles in it because it was chasing halo
>>12016884yea the big maps and vehicles fucked up socom 3, at least for online play. 2 was what people say, lightning in a bottle. I never played time splitters but I've heard good things about the series.
>>12016887Well I'll pick up socom 2 if you pick up timesplitters and we can both decide if I'm correct
>>12016890I was actually recommended a ps1 cooking game last night that I really wanted to try. I'll definitely give timesplitters a chance though.
>>12016893Game on
>>12016905give me a couple days and I'll give you my impressions.
>>12012169>That game is THE reason MLG even existsThat's Halo 2 and I'm not shitposting.
>>12011840Played all of these recently and only 1 was any good. The others ran like shit and the team ai was retarded
>>12017774In terms of online play I'm telling you, 2 was the best. I didn't really focus much on campaign other than to unlock skins, and there was a glitch in 2 to basically unlock anything you wanted, even hidden guns that weren't meant for release were actually loaded in the game and you could play them online. Such a unique online gaming experience with this one specific game. I don't know, the glitches in them were almost intentional, because it added a whole new depth to the gameplay.
>>12017774>The others ran like shit and the team ai was retardedNot even mad but genuinely curious what you consider good ai in 6th gen? I can't even think of a game in which ai was ever really impressive enough to point out.
>>12017856In Socom 1 the team ai was awesome. They could take out enemies silently when selecting "fire at will" before you'd even see them. In th sequels I found myself just doing all the work because my team couldn't even see them until im right up close
imagine playing a 30fps shooter onlineimagineno seriously just imagine
>>12018487Alright I can somewhat agree with you, cause I do recall playing the 2 campaign and it being a bit odd at some points.>>12018493I don't need to, I lived when that was online gaming on a console. no bullshit subscription fees either until xbox came along.
>>12018487Socom is like call of duty in which the online gameplay is the whole point. That's why I feel different about the game than you do I guess.
>>12016905Alright I gave it a try and honestly, I wasn't sold on it. I did know someone who said they played it online and said it was really good, or maybe that was for the second one. It felt too simple for me, I can see people who like doom liking a game like this. One thing I noticed right away was the fact I had to press triangle for back. Something that stopped around ps3 I believe.
