What are your favorite levels in Super Mario Bros?I’ve always liked the ones with unique environments, like 5-1 with the silver pipes and white trees.
>>12015005>I’ve always liked the ones with unique environmentsfor sure. i preferred the night level (levels?) and the mushroom tops.
I also really like 3-1 because it takes place at night. Seeing it for the first time was really cool.
>>12015010Same. 4-2 was cool because it was the only level in the game with this color palette and it reminded me of the super mushroom.
Also 6-3 felt really unique as a kid because it was almost entirely in black and white. No other level looked like that.>>12015014Meant to say 4-3
Flying fish.>>12015012The bridge with the 3 Stooges as I refer to them, cracks me up.
>>12015005can't stand mario eternal meh
>>12015018This was always my favorite level as a kid because it was so bizarre looking. Couldn't tell what it was supposed to be at the time and I'm still not sure if it was originally intended to look like an ice stage. It became even cooler later in life when someone pointed out the red/brown outline in the clouds that almost makes it look like they're bleeding (I know it's just the palette limitations but still). The variety of the level themes in SMB1 aren't as obvious as they are in other games but the subtlety sometimes makes it even better. There's something satisfying about seeing a different environment without the game throwing "you are now in desert/water/sky/ice/etc. land" in your face.
>>12015018You got me to go to vgmaps and actually look at the art in every stage. From what I could tell 6-3 and 4-3 are the only stages that are truly unique looking (although there's a hidden/bonus part in 4-2 that is similar to 4-3). But I also noticed more subtle differences I'd never noticed before, like for example I used to think the two night worlds (3 and 6) were the same but actually world 3 has those white tree and fence assets while world 6 has the green bush and green hill assets (like the first level of the game).
I'm going to get a lot of flack for this, but I really like 8-3. The build up to 8-4 with the castles in the background is cool, and the level itself is really fun once you realize you can pretty much just ignore the hammer bros and jump over them. 4-1 gets an honorable mention since its cathartic to discover Lakitu cannot hit you if you never stop running. My least favorites are those stupid fucking looping maze castles. I hate those.

I like 8-3 in 2/LL, a real castle in the sky
>>12015005Was there a black night level with snow and Bullet Bills? If so that's my favorite.
>>12015340Reminds me how in Zelda 1, the only dungeons that don't use blue "water" are the dungeons 5, 6, and 9... which use red for "lava" because they're all located up in volcano that is Death Moutnain.
6-1, it has a very intriguing layout that almost seems like it could come from a more modern Mario game.
>>12015005I like 'em all but I like the night time looking levels most I guess
