The "tate" mechanic wasn't too bad until the final boss. There are just instances in which the boss decides to cast a spell to be invulnerable or deflect your melee attacks that outright negates your efforts in building up your tate gauge and you're waiting around for more enemies to respawn so you aren't doing a pixels worth of damage. Generally a good game, but I can see why people drop Shinobi at the final boss. Hell, the train station boss in level 3 with the ninja dogs are harder than anything else up till the final boss.

i would argue the tate system is flawed the entire game. you have a katana, it should never be doing 0.05% of a bosses life bar like a limp pool noodle. its a fucking sword. thats shit tier game design. doesnt need to be powered up to do more damage than that its already a dangerous weapon.

there is nothing wrong with making it so you can get a 1 hit kill if you want with the tate combo as an option or whatever. but because you are essentially forced into one hyper specific way of fighting the bosses, there isnt any reason to replay the game other than if you are a highscore autist. and you can do that in lots of other games. i beat it once and sold it.

I mean with some of the bosses like the old man with the ninja dogs and the final boss you hit them once and they immediately vanish so you can't follow it up with the standard square combo attack, so even if the katana did 5% of the total life bar it'll still be slow to hack away at the health bar without building up your tate.

Most bosses it was fine. During the levels it came naturally due to the player having a sense of urgency in finding more foes to feed their sword so it flows nicely into chaining kills and singling out certain enemies as you build up power.

Yup. There's a reason no one talks about this game, it's fucking garbage.

Song was so good they brought it back in Nightshade.

I was having fun until the blind samurai boss. I just got sick of basically needing good RNG with the positions of those flying enemies to build up tate so I could get one good slash in a tiny window where you can attack him.

The Tate system in itself isn't a bad idea but the bosses are generally executed very poorly, the camera also pumps up the artificial difficulty, its just an annoying game experience rather than fun.

Filtered. The final boss is obnoxious but you can still break his guard with a kick and get the tate instakill if you're not shit.
>>
>>12019107
The manual doesn't mention how to initiate a kick, but I haven't tried charging up the sword since I didn't look at the manual before hand. It says it consumes slash shards which I assume is the red gauge before your health. Maybe I'll try it another time since I have the save file with hard unlocked.

Filtered is a buzzword for "moving on to more fun games because my time in life is limited"

Nailed it. Only an idiot would keep playing this game after they realize it's trash.

Posting on 4chan is more fun than playing Shinobi PS2. It's harsh but it's the truth.

You're not. A one-hit tate is only the fastest way to kill the last boss and the game tracks your best times for completing levels, so if you wanted to do a replay maybe you could try finding the fastest way to kill bosses.

Also if you're playing as Hotsuma your sword doesn't even power up in 1-A and 1-B, so you have to be a little clever to figure out how to kill those bosses in a single attack. Getting one-hit kills on some of the other bosses aloo takes a little creativity, especially on higher difficulties.

I'm curious what the people who think the last boss isn't fair think about Nightshade. To me it's an objectively worse game in every way, but it has a completely deterministic and much simpler last boss.

OST might be a little better, maybe.

Never got around to playing Nightshade yet.

I post the same thing on every Shinobi thread. So here it goes.

The issue with the final boss isn't that it is a hard fight where you're on your toes everytime. It's that there's only a single way to defeat the boss, and it's so difficult to die during this battle (the talismans drop health pickups) that you can stay upwards of 15 minutes trying, and not coming even close to dying. That's how boring it is.

I've S rank'd Shinobi before, and finally played and beat Nightshade for the first time this year.

It does some things better and some worse, the UI is a bit more busy and confusing than it should be. Theoretically it's an easier game due to your increased mobilty, getting air hits replenishes your double jump and the homing air kick, but they counter that by really going overboard with bottomless pits to an unfun degree, starting with the level with the broken bridge. There's definitely some depth to being good at managing your mobility resources but the execution is too infuriating to be particularly fun at points. Getting hit with a homing shot mid jump and falling into a pit gets old really fast. I did like the longer tate combos and the cool animations for it. Regarding the final boss, yeah you can loop him really easily, I've killed him with no damage. I'll take it over another faggy final bossfight from the first.

Good track choice, but I'm a sucker for dnb. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlzQV3Z5l_0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1_nXAq1U54

but yea they're all good.

Agree with everything else. I think adding checkpoints kind of made them a little more confident in adding those dumb instant death pits. The really unforgivable thing for me though are those boring fucking auto scroller levels. Also HIbana's clone attack just isn't as fun as the charge sword and I hate having to look for the shit to power it up. Building combo count with the little swords to generate more clone bar or whatever is kind of engaging sometimes, but mostly I didn't really like that either.

I'd break enemies guards with a kick and then use the Sai spin attacks with down square iirc to build the the special meter throughout the level, but yeah doing that can be a bit of a pace breaker.

you are forced into one way of playing. you have to use the charged up tate attacks to kill bosses because otherwise you would need to hit them like 300 times and because the game also forces you to play on a timer you cant even do that for a challenge. you can either kill the boss with 1 super tate attack, or a bunch of smaller ones. any uncharged attacks will be doing like 5% of the total damage to the boss.

if only the first chapter lets you play it straight that doesnt really mean anything because that is the tutorial chapter. its the easiest chapter and the one people will spend the least time playing. the game has a difficulty spike right away at chapter 2 or 3 and from then on each stage will take exponentially longer to beat for a new player than chapter 1. so its a dishonest argument to say that the game doesnt force you to kill all the bosses using tate combos because the first tutorial chapter doesnt do that.

i like the game for what it is but its still a 5/10 for me. the death timer plus mandatory tate combo playstyle strikes me as a newgame+ secondary character playstyle. not what i would have sold the game around.

>you have a katana, it should never be doing 0.05% of a bosses life bar
Explain to us how you kill a tank or attack helicopter with a katana.
>>
>>12025336
Very carefully.
>>
>>12025336
idk maybe they shouldnt make you hit it with a sword? however- its also a videogame. hitting it 300 times to kill it isnt fun. hitting it 5 times or 1 time to kill it is just as lame. this is where game design comes in. but its a moot point. there are countless organic living bosses and the helicopter and the tank are the exceptions. so why do you argue about the exception? how many bosses in this game are just some guy? if nothing else i think it wuld have been fun to have the katanas base damage value change depending on what you fight. that would make the 300 hits to kill the helicopter or the tank funny at least.
>>
>>12025245
>otherwise you would need to hit them like 300 times
Or just use ninpo, which is the fastest way to kill almost every single boss except the last one.
