Why did they stop even though low res designed 3D games will still look good in higher res unlike 2D games? Even as early as N64, games have looked so ugly, blurry, and washed out in low resolutions. They've been missing this crunchy textures and high contrast colors that Quake and many PS1 games had. Seriously, why did devs abandon it?

pic is designed for 320x200 stretched to 320x240

Why?
>>
Because people stopped playing at 320x240.
Next retarded question.
>>
>>12018637
You’re a fucking asshole.
>>
>>12018637
Text becomes unreadable unless you make some handcrafted bitmap font which is not great when you want to support all kinds of languages.

I've got a pc magazine with advertisements for Star Wars Shadow of the Empire saying it requires a 3d card, must be one of the first. I think it was not long after Interstate 76 that some games wouldn't even let you go below 640x480, maybe Pod. I think its a good resolution even for today since a pentium 166 is well suited to it. Even so, Half Life even supported 320x240 but Quake 3 didn't.

Because we had the technology to move past it.

Modern games look like blurry colorless mud even at 4K resolution thanks to people like you.
>>

Thats an art style problem anon, not a technical one
>>

Do you smell burnt toast?
>>
>>12019270
Art style only exists because the demand exists and the technology facilitates it.

>blurry colorless mud
That's so 2008. The current trend is bright neon colors. What kind of IQ does one need to lie this brazenly about a subject he knows nothing about?
>>
>>12019270
Art style in intentional choice, but muddy mess is not, it's the way default graphics works and devs don't care to do any better. Blurry colorless mess is entirely graphics accelerator hardware's fault.
>>

N64 games ran at the same resolution, the problem was the use of hardware enforced antialiasing while also running at a lower res than a CRT TV. If it was a 480p system like the Dreamcast, the output would far less ugly on its intended display.

Kill yourself.

>The current trend is bright neon colors
Have you seen Doom Dark Ages, Clair Obscur, Senua Hellblade series, Ready Or Not, Trepang2, and many others? Even the neon colored games look very washed out in smaller resolutions.

>crunchy textures
You know DOS vanilla Quake has built in mipmapping, right?
>>
For me it's 800x600. I have an older monitor so I can still browse the internet in its intended resolution.
>>
>>12018637
When exactly did 800x600 become the standard?
>>
>>12021423
During the latter half of the 90s. Windows 95 supporting 800x600 was a big step towards it. Of course in 1995 it was extremely high end, but by 1999 it had become a mainstream option.
>>
Because 640x480 shit just looks better

It only looks good with old-school rendering. When you bump the polygons and the rendering type, things start to look ugly and cause motion sickness.
>>
>>12021387
I'm pretty sure 1024x786 is the moreso the internet's native resolution.
>>
>>12022396
Playing Megaman Legends upscaled didn't give me motion sickness.

While it's okay and can handle 800x600 layouts fine, many old websights were explicitly designed for 800x600 resolutions. In the golden age of websights with iframes, graphics, tables, etc, you had to have a fixed resolution because there weren't a lot of options for resizing the website. Browsing an old 800x600 websight with all the bells and whistles in full screen is pure ecstasy.
