Anyone who's played it, is it worth playing through to the end? I'm getting into Castlevania and going through the games more or less in order, and I loved the first game. I've tried out Vampire Killer a bit and got as far as the first boss, but it just feels kind of boring so far. Limited continues in a slow exploration-based game is just mean too. Should I ditch it or keep playing?

Vampire Killer is RUBBISH.
Picrel is the only 'classicvania' worth playing btw.

idk it's one of the few i haven't played, didn't know it had limited continues. what emulator are you using?
anyway from what it sounds like it doesn't sound that good, i'd probably just skip to 3 (jp version is the best, it has a translation on romhacking.net) if you want more action platforming or 2 if you like the exploration feel, it's a direct sequel to 1 but it's pretty different in terms of gameplay.

Played it on openMSX. You have 3 lives before you have to start over. Apparently the only actual way to get more continues is through the official Konami Game Master cheating cartridge, which is incredibly retarded. Might try using that if vanilla is too frustrating. I'll probably go on to Simon's Quest next, though I'm also playing through Haunted Castle on the side. Brutal game, but I kinda like it. Sure as hell glad I don't need to use real coins on it though.

How is the Arrange Mode of Chronicles compared to the original X68000 game?

Never played it, Vampire Killer and Haunted Castle are the only Classicvanias I haven't beaten and I honestly don't want to, they both look pretty boring. Oh and I also haven't beaten the N64 games if these count as Classicvanias

wtf is a MSX

It's pretty neat, the game is closer to a Castlevania/Resident Evil mix than a real classicvania. Replayed it a few times last month, the game is designed around managing resources. Still, a couple of levels have design issues.

>Limited continues in a slow exploration-based game is just mean too
Use the konami game master for more lives/level select/continues if you can't make it. The difficulty is actually very low, it's all about knowing and understanding levels.

Harder for the wrong reasons.

The redheaded stepchild of Classicvanias. It wasn't even really meant to be a Castlevania title initially, rather it just half-heartedly became one as development went.

Not too different, normal mode is definitely easier than X68k since you take less damage, but I'd say Arrange on hard mode is a tiny bit more difficult than X68k's first loop. Simon looks cooler too.
The other guy says it's 'harder for the wrong reasons,' and he's partly right. Some enemies in certain areas really like to insta-respawn like you off-screened them when you clearly didn't, and the werewolf boss is straight-up broken on PS1; she's invincible while jumping so fighting her with the whip is basically impossible. Lack of knockback also has actually fucked me over before, when I got hit while jumping over a pit.
So there kinda are a lot of little differences on PS1 that occasionally make it harder, but most of the time they do work in your favor.
I could go on but I don't wanna sperg out about this game too much.

Maybe I'll try to give it another go again soon. I'll stick with vanilla unless I get really frustrated. I only found a translation of the French manual after I tried the game out, so confusion about mechanics probably played a role in my boredom and annoyance.

Interesting. I'll probably play both versions of the game anyway if it's not too long of a game. The original game can't be too hard.

Note that the underground level third act requires you to warp using doors (down+jump).

Thanks for the link, the manual was still kinda vague on what exactly the items did.

Play games you enjoy playing, marrying yourself to an entire franchise is retarded
>>
>>12023214
I'm pretty sure I'd need to actually play through the franchise to figure out which ones I enjoy

You don't have to beat every game to decide if you like the gameplay loop.
>>
>>12019997
The Wicked Child arrangement is such a cool tune.

Gameplay loop doesn't exist. That's just a polite way to say the contents of your game suck.
