>boot up game
>initial load can be a little slow
>return to it a day later
>initial load is now insanely fast
>turns out it caches up to 700MB of the last 3 games you've played
>devs can also have it prefetch data and store it in HDD space
>can flag certain data to always be cached so they only get overwritten by another game
>some games like Vexx completely remove in-level load screens that are present on PS2/GC
>some games stream data into cache depending on how close you are to the area it's accessed in next

It's such a genius idea.

yeah.
that makes their decision of not relying on an hdd on the x360 questionable.
even if you had an hdd, the games could not rely on it. only later in the x360 life they allowed devs to do so, and i believe it was pressure from rockstar that made them take that decision because gta 5 cannot run on the x360 without an hdd.

With the 360 they even added a button to bring up sidekick.

what do you mean?
You can literally install games on the HDD for faster loading
>>
>>12020198
Lots of games had to be made with the assumption there was no HDD. Those games that require it came much later on. Interestingly lots of PS3 games did take advantage of the HDD.
>>
>>12020205
That is literally irrelevant, they can be installed to the HDD
>>
>>12020025
Yeah that was because they sold the early X360 in two editions, as either "Premium" (20GB HDD) or "Core" (No HDD).

it is relevant.
gta 5 has an install disc because it uses the dvd drive and the hdd data install at the same time to stream assets. just like the xbox og would cache data to the hdd to stream data faster while the dvd does something else.
if you install the "play" disc of gta 5 this happens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0gPB0gdoOM

>>12020224
the "pro" should have been the only option.
or have the "core" have a 20gb hdd and the launch "pro" with a 60gb hdd.
having an hdd at all was a big advantage for the ps3. it was an important reason why mgs4 only came out on ps3.
>>
>>12020214
You misunderstand.

Games on the 360 did not utilize a HDD in the way the original Xbox or PS3 would. If you want to see for yourself, unplug your HDD from your 360 and play a game. It will run with no performance changes than if you played it with a HDD plugged in.

The ability to install games on an HDD didn't even come until the NXE update with new avatars. And even when you could install games on an HDD with the new update, it was not a guarantee that a user would have an HDD because Microsoft would sell versions of the 360 that didn't include one, like the Arcade bundle.
>>
>>12020240
Some games also ran WORSE when installed to the HDD

Dude, why do you people lie so much https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DY20ATdXaiI
Load times are almost always going to be better
anyway, this isn't /vr/ so keep it to yourself
>>
>>12020261
you still don't get it and i have no spare time or will to explain to idiots.
>>
>>12020278
I do understand, you are just wrong
They cache the data in the same way as the OG XBox, that's why running games off the HDD sometimes had performance issues, because you are caching and loading from the same device
Load times would always be faster regardless
>>
>>12020283
no, you got it wrong.
the xbox 360 doesn't cache at all, that's why you don't need an hdd.
the install makes the game run entirely from the hdd, it is an exact copy of the dvd. you can throw the dvd out of the window and the game will run just fine (with a hacked console to allow it, that's it). also, this is an action the user has to deliberately make.

the original xbox copies uncompressed assets to the hdd by itself without user intervention. this data is different from what it's on the dvd because the dvd contains compressed assets.

that is the difference between an install and a cache. and that is why the og xbox depends on having an hdd to function.
>>
>>12020314
There's literally an option to clear cache in the settings, what are you talking about
>>
>>12020319
all that does is delete canceled unfinished downloads and unused title updates. that's it.
>>
>>12020319
IIRC that deletes updates. I remember doing that to do glitches in New Vegas that were patched.
