Never really knew my grandpa, other than he loved playing Sid Meier's Civ all day. Only when his apartment was emptied after he had passed, did we discover a barely used PS1 just collecting dust. So now I have a PS1 along with these games.
I don't have a connection or nostalgia for this console gen, let alone for these franchises. But obviously have I heard of the ones stacked on the top half. I did try out Tekken with my brother and it was mildly entertaining. The other ones I've tried so far, like Tomb Raider, felt clanky to play...
I want to hear any thoughts in general: Did I luck out with this collection, or are there better PS1 games I should get? Is there a game here I should complete because they're considered classics?

You have some decent stuff to start with. TR3 is difficult, the first one is great. The Tomb Raider games take a little time to adjust to but they're worth it. Decent variety with Wipeout, Tekken 2, RE, FF7 and Ridge Racer, but the others I'm not familiar with.

It's a console with tons of games. It won't be hard to find something that clicks with you. Something like the Crash or Spyro games are easy pick up and play titles. I like shooters like Raystorm. RE1 is beloved so it isn't a bad idea to give it some of your time to see why.

I appreciate the tips. I think I'll start with Resident Evil then, considering it's the first in the series. Will also check out tomb raider 1 and 2 and see if I can get my hands on them in the meantime. Also, can I jump right into FF7 without having played the earlier games?

I'll def look into raystorm also. I have been eyeing Crash Bandicoot and Spyro just now, but also Toy Story 2, Gex and 007. I feel like if I've heard about them, they should have atleast some appeal. Now that I come to think of it, an old GTA game would be fitting to have played in the coming months. Before rockstar releases GTA 6...

Yes FF7 and almost all other Final Fantasy games are stand alone. Highly recommend Gex 3, the others are alright but 3 is great. Think of this as an excuse to just spend time playing games you normally wouldn't. Great way to enjoy yourself.

>anon makes the shocking discovery that people are born every day.
Somebody born the day the towers fell would be a 24-y.o. NEET today.

Thanks again.

Yeah he was born 1 jan 1939. Must've been 56 if he got PS1 in 1995.

Well, since you mentioned the towers and anon asks of my age I feel compelled to share that I was in my mothers womb when she was on vacation in New York and went up in one of the towers. A year later, they were no more.

Old people can play videogames to, and a teen that played pong in 1973 would be a grandpa by now.

You think your grand po-pa ever jerked his girkin to Lara Croft or Tifa's fat tits?

Expect the golf one, all of them are considered classics.
What type of games do you like?

I was tasked of going through his PC for photos. 2+2. I don't need to say more than that.

For consoles I will always have a soft heart for party games. Especially Mario Kart if you consider it as such. On the flipside, I don't find racing games too compelling. I don't think I've ever played a platformer game I don't like, but I'm far more into PC gaming. I know those categories of games I play on PC don't really exist for PS1.

Fym platformers don't exist on PS1
Several crash bandicoot games, Spyro.
Probably others, idk if medieval and blasto count, but I also didn't play those.
I think there should be a mild to moderate amount of platformers on psx considering they were competing with N64.

Party games, I think there was one called crash bash, maybe others. But yeah it was a relatively new genre I think, Mario party kinda popularized it more?

Oh maybe you meant there are other genres you like that don't exist on psx like souls like or something. There was a prototypical souls like on PS1 iirc, I played it briefly at a friend's house. Might have been PS2 game tho idk.

FF7 is the best game on the console

It a decent early to mid gen collection, the type of person who read reviews and some early budget games. I would have been incredibly impressed with this at the time but it looks like he lost interest before the end of the generation.
Good games but they got sequals that were even better.

I can't imagine a boomer playing a ff game

If you want something challenging, try out the first Rayman game. It gets really hard after some point, afaik there's some weird story about how the devs fucked up playtesting and made the game so hard by accident, but I can't remember what exactly that was.

Your grandpa had a nice taste, then again this is the board with shitposters trying to make you believe their dads are dying every day, so who knows about the veracity of your story.

I'm pretty sure the shitposts are from one guy.
