SNES or DS version? I hacked my Wii U and kinda wanna use the touch screen.
>>12020894Snes is the only good version, every single rerelease fucked things up.
>>12020894All you have to do is listen to music from both versions and it will become very obvious which one you should play:SNES: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctvSG5xfIDwDS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BGp-gekaQQ
>>12020894either/or is fine, just don't play the bonus content in the ds version because it really sucks.
>>12020907What did the DS version "fuck up"?
>>12020894SNES. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it and no reason not to play it. The extra content in the DS version is really bad and not worth it
>>12020894The touch screen is only used for menu interaction in the DS port, so unless that specifically is really important to you for some reason, I don't see a point in that. The DS version does use the really cool animated cinematics from the PSX port, but without that version's godawfull loading. Boggles my mind that they went through the effort and cost of having all that nice animation done for the PSX port, but then they get their F-team to just throw the port together in the shittiest manner possible. What, you don't want to stop and wait for 15 seconds every single fucking time there's a screen transition or the music track changes? What do you mean buffering? The DS version has slightly less screen resolution, but it's hardly enough to matter. It also has a new translation but I didn't think it changed all that much. There's some added side contents too, with some kind of monster breeding arena or something, but I never bothered checking it out.>>12020939Sounds virtually the same.
>>12020894SNES
>>12021096I know the earbuds they give you at the airport are free, but you should really upgrade to something a little better.

>>12021203>>12021217>>12021218>2025>DS version finally gets canceled How long have we been waiting for this? Everyone else calls it the definitive version, but we knew better. Speaking of which, you DO have your original cart, right?
>>12020939Sounds like the cut the bass and scooped the mids so it would be louder and clearer on tiny DS speakers
>>12021203only if you do the shitty bonus content. actually it might be in the credits too because it was in the ps1 credits but you can ignore that.
>>12021229I sold my original cart to get my cat fixed.
>>12020894DS has the best translation and is not a bad way to play, if you ignore Arena of the Asses and Lost Santorum.
>>12021190Some of the instruments are slightly different. The SNES had better instrumentation, but the DS version's isn't different or worse enough in this regard that I think this is a very significant point.Maybe if you're an audiophile it's more important, but most people aren't.>>12021229People have complained about the DS version in the past.>>12021276I never did try the arena content, how bad is it? Like out of curiosity.
Op here, I made up my mind, SNES version. I actually compared the 2 side by side befire posting this. But this thread just confirmed my suspicions.>SNES had better audio. I even recorded it on my phone to compare side by side for what it's worth. Both with my Wii U on a CRT>DShttps://files.catbox.moe/qdufir.m4a>SNES https://files.catbox.moe/9k4bcl.m4a>better graphics/resolutionon the character portrait especially I noticed I couldn't see Crono smiling>translationIt's very subtle. But Ted Woolsey's take on Crono getting woken up in the morning had more charm to it. DS felt slightly flatter in delivery>No one complained about the UI in the original Fair enough, I just thought the touch screen might be nice and I might as well try it if I'm on a Wii U. But there's plenty if ither DS games to try consolized that I'd be too afraid to play in public.
>>12021229people have been saying the pc version is the definitive version not DS because it has DS content without the shit music and tiny screen, i'd still say it's SNES though
>>12021203chrono cross is canon, you might not personally like that it is, but it is. i agree it's not a good followup to chrono trigger.
originalthe answer is always the originalwhen will you people learnalso play Cross firstand RD when you find the reference in Chronopolis
>>12020894Chrono Cross. Trigger doesn't matter and you'll understand why.
>>12021203>non-canon OH NO NO NO NO, HE DOESN'T KNOW!
>>12022939>It's very subtle. But Ted Woolsey's take on Crono getting woken up in the morning had more charm to it. DS felt slightly flatter in deliveryTo each his own, but a lot of people like a lot of the SNES lines too. I remember the DS promotional site also used "good morning Crono" without realizing it had been retranslated. I also remember Tom Slattery lamented he wasn't as familiar with Chrono Trigger as he was the Final Fantasy games. There have been attempts to merge both scripts since there's good material in each, but fan amalgamations always miss the mark somehow. It's always some guy who doesn't know Japanese going off vibes in a text editor.>>12022978It doesn't have the Arena, which was basically a quick monster-battler that gamed some items and equipment you shouldn't be getting yet.I prefer DS anyway because some parts like the party select screen look like a cheap flash-game.
>>12023123You got it backwards.
>>12020939>>12021096>>12021248>Sounds like the cut the bass and scooped the mids so it would be louder and clearer on tiny DS speakersExactly. If the bass tones are what's missing from the DS version, that could probably be solved by setting an equilaizer.
>>12023219If it's a high pass filter than those tones are gone for good . I'd have to look at it with an eq profiler Compression and limiting and also destructive to the waveform
>>12023337I'm on l00nix and I have no clue how to set up an equalizer to try to figure out if the DS track actually has a bass line hidden in there somwhere.Maybe if I boot winlolz later I can investigate.
>>12023219The fact we need to have this discussion at all is enough to condemn the DS version to the garbage.
>>12020894DS, don't believe nostalgiafags
>>12021091the extra content is absolute shite. and the new items are completely unnecessary and unbalanced.
Steam version any good?
>>12024187Why not emulate at that point? Seriously? Steam version can't be more than a rom wrapper
>>12020894SNES hands down.
>>12024213I was hoping someone who has the game or knows more about it could respond

>>12022939>I just thought the touch screen might be niceA stylus isn't really an improvement over a d-pad-driven cursor in a game like this. It works pretty well but you don't really need the freedom to click (or click-and-drag) anywhere on the screen at any time. This isn't SimCity or Mario Paint. Personally I think buttons work better than pointer-type controls, for simple JRPG menu systems. (I recently played through the DS game A.S.H., which is a Sakaguchi JRPG that forces the use of the stylus, and even in that game, which actually uses grid-shaped battle arena maps and thus gives you an extra reason to want to click in various locations, I think a d-pad scheme would have worked at least as well.)
>>12023123But you get the backstory of why this happened (the "heroes" abandoned Schala)
>>12025183I don't need a YouTube video to tell me what the DS version sounds like. I've played it (the first three hours of it, at least). It sounds like shit.>>12024187The Steam version is mostly fine. It has the new translation and content from the DS version (except the Arena of the Ages which I can assure you you don't want to play anyway) with the audio and visual fidelity of the SFC version. It supports widescreen for rooms big enough to support it, which I appreciate. It adds an "auto-battle" feature which can be used to fast forward through attack animations, so that's nice I guess. It has some bugs though, such as the background music of an area resetting whenever you get into a battle, and your characters doing a weird visual vibration when running diagonally. Some of the UI elements are incongruous in that their pixels are too big or too small to conform with the rest of the game's graphics. There are fan made patches that fix the bugs and incongruous UI elements, as well as a patch to use the old translation if you want to. With the patches, its probably the definitive version of the game.
>>12020894Damn, can you play DS/3DS on Wii U with the touchscreen? That sounds fucking kino, I'd never even thought about it now I want a Pee-yew
>>12026948No dumbass. The Wii-U cannot handle 3DS emulation. Different CPU architectures. It does have DS games via Virtual Console ports.Aka pirate that shit and don't be a bitch (well you couldn't even buy it even if you wanted to cause they shut down that service anyway)
>>12026948iirc with ds games they made it so the screens side by side rather than up and down, which really fucks over some games like partners in time.
>>12027109The Wii U DS VC emulator gives you like a dozen different layouts to adjust how the two screens are laid out across your TV and the gamepad. If none of them are to your liking (which is unlikely), you can make your own layouts but editing a .json file in the emulator's directory on the Wii U's MLC.
>>12025672>the background music of an area resetting whenever you get into a battle, unplayable> There are fan made patches that fix the bugs and incongruous UI elements, excellent, nevermind then
>>12027093>>12027185But if you have a modded Wii U can you play any DS game?
>>12020894I came to find out thanks to a /v/ thread several days ago that gamefaqs considers the DS version to be the best. The SNES version though I think was also in their top ten video games of all time.
>>12027861What you do is that you download a DS Virtual Console installer for a game, then you use an "injector" software. This allows you change all the things you might like (boot music, menu graphics, rom, etc). The actual DS emulator they made for the Wii U is okay -- not great. Titles that usually cause a bit of trouble will definetly cause trouble with it. The second Advance Wars is a good example of this. There are *some* configuration optoins for how to deal with the multiple screens and screen filters, but we're miles away from what Retroarch offers in that regard. For example, it's impossible to blow up one screen on the TV while at the same time having the other screen smaller next to it.I'm guessing that Chrono Trigger will work. The only really fancy stuff it does is the FMV sequences it plays, and some of the warp/time travel graphics. This i a case of you fucking around, in a quest for knowledge.
>>12020894You can actually play both because the game can be beaten in two sittings.
Why did they change Frog's dialogue for?
>>12028209It created a plothole since no one talked like that and he didn't sound like that when he was younger so where'd he get it from?
>>12028358I always thought he was putting on an affectation that he felt would help people take him more seriously despite his goofy froglike appearance. He goes out of his way to speak in an extremely formal "knightly" way out of insecurity.
>>12028073>There are *some* configuration optoins for how to deal with the multiple screens and screen filters, but we're miles away from what Retroarch offers in that regard. It's been a long time since I did DS injection but I remember using a custom archive done by the community with 20+ additional screen options. It covered pretty much everything, even for tate mode. I got it from gbatemp, might want to look into that if you're doing injections.
>>12028209Because they're FUCKING stupid and don't understand why Chrono Trigger is an all time classic.
>>12028654It's clearly Woolsey replicating the success of Cyan (which, BTW, was a *fantastic* translation choice since that character supposed to be an old-fashioned, samurai retainer -- funny how well that fit his vibe). It's kind of like Woolsey had FFVI fresh off his mind when he hit that part of the script early on and thought, "oh, he's the queen's retainer, I'll have him sound similar." Frog, despite his insecurities that he overcomes, is SUPPOSED to sound direct and a little crass. Take good note of his cocky victory sprite, and tell me that fits the downright fussy Cyan "''twas most improper!" Garamonde archtype.
