1) some games literally had surround sound
2) several more had it but didn't pay the license cost so couldn't advertise.
- Playing a sound in the rear channel is basically a simple case of playing the sample inverted in the R and normal in the L so it's really easy for the snes -
which leads us to:
3) Many games trigger matrix decode but didn't mean to.

There you go. That's where the "myth" comes from.
