Dracula X is a lot more challenging and has less slowdown than Rondo of Blood.
Levels are completely different, has new bosses. Only enemy sprites and richter sprite are taken from Rondo. Might as well say Symphony of the Night is a Rondo and Castlevania IV "version" since it reused sprites from those.

Rondo's reputation was always inflated by it being Japan-only to start, and Dracula X's always suffered for missing the sort of features you could use to pad out a write-up to sell the game (consistently branching stages, extra character). While Dracula X is missing features even from CV3, it's basically a continuation on that game, design-wise, and it's still really good. People talk up Rondo as the pinnacle of Classicvania when it was proto-IGA in a lot of ways, having screens foreshadowed by previous areas that you can conjecture a way to reach somewhere down the line. Dracula X is just pure action goodness.
>>
This game and Rondo are sort of like Valis IV (SNES) and Valis IV (PCE)
>>
Hong Kong '97 is more challenging than all those games you mentioned, must be better.
>>
Dracula XX (SNES) suffered from poor marketing in the US. Dracula X (=Rondo) was hyped up by magazines as the greatest game ever so when it came to release XX the marketing was trying to pretend like "Here is the Dracula X you've wanted all along!", I mean nobody reffered to Rondo of Blood as "Rondo of Blood" it was called Dracula X. So in the US they renamed XX to X and changed all the key art to that of Rondo to try and pass it as something it's not. Of course people would be disappointed and that's where the "bad port" meme comes from.

Also anti 2D bias was already starting to be a thing in 95 when it was released.

>Also anti 2D bias was already starting to be a thing in 95 when it was released.
Curious how it didn't affect SMW 2 or DKC 2
>>
>>12023164
Rondo is more fun
>>
ITT: samefag tranny having a melty
>>
>>12023164
X feels like you're walking in mud. fucking horrible. i've picked it up 3 times and drop it every time before the 2nd boss.
>>
>>12023164
Bit off-topic but I hate how in Castlevania games the bats and medusas always spawn in front of you
That's usually not a problem but in this game you can walk backwards (or just look back in the moving platforms on level 2) so it's possible to abuse it in many parts
It looks so silly to get to the end of a corridor and just whip the 5 bats following you
I know I could just not do it but my autism doesn't let me, I can't unsee it now
Wish they came from random directions

>>12023164
It's harder but in an annoying way
You often can't make a mistake or you get stunlocked and raped by enemies, and in some later levels those purple armor guys are in very awkward and annoying positions
>>
I thought Dracula X has a pretty strong start as a harder, more intense take on Rondo of Blood's mechanics, but always feel like the game loses steam by the end.
>>
Could this have saved the Castlevania series?
>>
>>12023238
DKC2 sold 25% of what 1 sold. And yoshi's island sold less than 10% of what SMW sold, although that's obviously not a fair comparison due to pack in status.
>>
>>12023164
Hot take, they're both fun and worth playing.
>>
>>12023414
We were discussing critical reception, not sales.
>>
>>12023238
The Nintendo hype train isn't affected by such things.
>>
>>12023282
>X feels like you're walking in mud
The walking speed animation has been sped up whie the actual walking speed is the same.

>i've picked it up 3 times and drop it every time before the 2nd boss
Weak.
>>
>>12023238
Curious how Yoshi's Island sucked and failed to sell hardware unlike DKC.
>>
>>12023659
Who cares about reviews? Reviewers don’t buy the games and shill for nepotism. Notice how journalists always immediately elevate themselves above us filthy consumer peasants. Our opinions don’t matter.
>>
>>12023164
Rondo of Blood is clearly better but they're both good/great games worth playing even today.
>>
>>12024292
>>12023562
No! Super Nintendo bad.
>>
>>12023164
It’s funny how you never see posts trying to affirm that Rondo is superior to X while the opposite take is spammed constantly.
>>
>>12024297
You're the biggest mindbroken bot in the entire site
>>
>>12024323
The truth is self evident enough that it need not be said. Only retard contrarian spammers with terminal autism and bad taste pretend Dracula X is good.
>>
>>12023659
Sales numbers matter more than reviews.
>>
>>12023385
That's actually the case for Rondo. After Death and Shaft, the game kinda deflates (Dracula is pathetic).
>>
>>12024283
>Curious how Yoshi's Island sucked and failed to sell hardware unlike DKC
Did you play the damn thing? Shitty crying baby, focus shifting from platforming to collectathon.
>>
>>12023228
Have you had your autism professionally diagnosed?
>>
>>12023228
Even the back of the box did that
>>
>>12024472
>collectathon
Reminder that this buzzword didn't exist in actual retro times (pre-2000).
Also good game bad
>>
>>12024323
Hm. He isn't really saying X is better than Rondo. Just that it's harder (true) and has less slowdown (true).
Rondo is still better game (imo) but X is also good.
I see it different, people who watch too much youtube constantly spam the internet with their "Dracula X is a bad Rondo port", while people who actually play video games know it's not a port and both are worth playing
>>
>>12024935
>Reminder that this buzzword didn't exist in actual retro times (pre-2000)
Because devs knew it was a shit idea and the game would tank.

>Also good game bad
YI is a terrible, terrible concept.
>>
>>12025219
>Because devs knew it was a shit idea and the game would tank
The fuck are you talking about? Devs nowadays still don't use "collectathon", it's aninternet western buzzword NPCs like you only use.
Yoshi's Island is less about collecting and more about not getting hit for 100%. That's why people like you hate it.
>good game bad
Sure sure
>>
>>12023228
Its been said that XX has "bad level design".
>>
>>12023659
Mega Man fan detected

>The fuck are you talking about?
The whole collectathon concept, it's horse shit, always has been.

>Yoshi's Island is less about collecting and more about not getting hit for 100%
YI is much more about collecting crap than not getting hit. YIDS IS about collecting crap and NOT getting hit, and it's turbo horse shit.

YI is a terrible, terrible concept with top tier devs in charge.
YIDS is a terrible, terrible concept with amateur devs in charge.

>Rondo of Blood is clearly better but they're both good/great games worth playing even today.
This.

They're also their own games with their own different levels. They're not ports.
Play whichever you prefer or both, you will have fun either way.
>>
>>12026278
You can ignore the scoring
>but it's too easy!
Upload your no-damage run
>>
>>12026325
>You can ignore the scoring
The game is fucking worthless if you ignore the scoring, but if you do try to 100%, it's downright terrible. YI is nothing but a terrible, terrible concept.
>>
>>12026340
You will convince someone
>>
>>12026348
Don't need to, people already saw that YI was a terrible, terrible concept on release.

>in this game you can walk backwards (or just look back in the moving platforms on level 2) so it's possible to abuse it in many parts

Yeah you can but actually not all bats/medusa spawn this way. There are cases where they spend on either side of the screen depending on where the player is standing; usually that happens for screens that don't scroll horizontally but iirc there are a couple of exceptions
>>
>>12026372
Sure
>>
>>12024472
I did and it was both a drag and lame. Hence why DKC actually worked unlike Yoshit.

Damn I love this game.

i prefer dracula x because it's on the snes and i just really like the snes
also the soundtrack sounds better
>>

Sure sure
>>
>>12026704
Enjoy your note cut outs with no release, sustain or decay and muffled farts.
>>
>>12025494
XX has difficult level design, which people call "bad" because it frustrates them.
>>
>>12027156
Because it was fozzy level design, tedious for the sake of it.
>>
>>12026378
Love this game's rhythm. Really rewards persistence in approach where you know where to time your jumps, whips, and crouches. Actually a pretty big departure from Rondo instancing monster spawns and usually making you stop and fight before moving forward.
>>
>>12027207
It's only tedious if you try to play it like Super Mario World.
>>
>>12027156
>XX has difficult level design
That's not even true, levels need to be understood and eventually mastered, but getting there is by no mean difficult.
