Why, after fully giving up on the console market, did Sega decide to go all in on supporting Microsoft’s original Xbox? What drove them to take such a risk on a company that, at the time, was mostly known for PC software and had little experience in game development?
Iirc it had something to do with Xbox's architecture being somewhat similar to the Dreamcast's. Either that or M$ just showered them with money lmao is highly possible because Microsoft literally wanted to buy Nintendo at one point lmao
Dreamcast was a Microsoft collaboration as it ran Windows CE. They were already in communication with one another, and Microsoft saw it as a way to make their console more palatable to the Japanese market.
>>12023273Because they paid them to?
Revenge at Sony for killing Sega
>>12023273because xbox was badass and dreamcast was bitch shit
>>12023273>it doesn't know
>>12023273no no, the real question is why do they insist on not rereleasing so many dreamcast/og xbox era games and for the ones they finally did, why wait so long
>>12023273GameCube too. It’s about half and half Xbox/gc, with sprinkles of dinkles on the ps2 and gba. So they basically released on everything even the ngage.
Why didn't micro$haft just buy Sega outright?
>>12023482sega would probably prefer death than be aqcuired by an american company. They linked up with Sammy as soon as their fortunes turned south.
>>12023482Sega, like many struggling Japanese developers refused to sell and Microsoft politely opted to not force a buyout. In reality, M$ should have laughed at them and bought all their IPs in liquidation, then scouted their best employees. All the people that wanted Shenmue 3, back when it would have mattered, have Sega to blame. As a 2ndparty developer, they wouldn't have had any funding problems. Which means you wouldn't have been stuck with years of shit releases coming outta them.Imagine SNK under M$, instead of the chinese. What exactly have the chinese done with SNK? Nothing, just like the koreans that had it before that. What about Tecmo? Under M$ Team Ninja would have never left.I could throw Bandai in there too, but Bandai has always rebounded on their own.M$ should have thrown their cash around and rounded them up, cause playing nice didn't get them anywhere.
>>12023536its fun to fantasize but we've seen how Microsoft handled the Rare aquisition and turned an all-star AAA studio into a pathetic shell
>>12023639All things Microsoft fall to the curse of Gates. I believe he made a deal with the devil and his contract is just about up.
>>12023280The Dreamcast has a DirectX 6 level GPU and WinCE for DC uses DX6. The Xbox GeForce 3 tier GPU on the other hand uses Direct X8.1, and DX8.1 basically rolled out as a PC update on the same day as the release of the Xbox.Peter Moore clearly took his Sega of America and Dreamcast experience to lay the foundation for the Xbox. It's notable that the Dreamcast was discontinued in America the same year the Xbox dropped and the Dreamcast's internet support was Windows-based and Developers could choose between a Sega developed Katana development environment or Windows CE. Katana had significantly less overhead and was faster, but Windows CE made porting games from the PC significantly easier>Microsoft developed a custom Dreamcast version of Windows CE>Was released right after the Dreamcast was discontinued>Literally uses the Dreamcast controller layout minus the VMU>Sega offered backwards compatibility for Dreamcast games>The Dreamcast was a testbed of sorts for Microsoft, with some of the console's games running on a custom version of Windows CE>Peter Moore who worked for Microsoft on the Xbo was the president and COO of Sega of America>The ESPN games, Gunvalkyrie, Headhunter Redemption, The House of the Dead 3, Jet Set Radio Future, NBA games, NCAA games, NFL games, NHL games, Otogi, Outrun, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Phantom Crash, Puyo Pop: Fever, Rent-A-Hero No. 1, Sega GT, Sega Soccer, the Sonic games, Spartan: Total Warrior, Spikeout, Super Monkey Ball: Deluxe, and Toejam & Earl 3 were all released on the Xbox>Hell, Jet Set Radio Future was even bundled with it>It went for the same audience of cool, hip, eXtreme jock gamers that the Dreamcast did>It fully realized the online gaming feature Sega ambitiously set out to popularize despite lacking the resources>Right at the end of Microsoft's E3 2007 conference, exec Peter Moore revealed a special edition Xbox 360 to be branded with Halo 3.They've been making PC games all along.
Sega was actually everywhere. But Xbox was mostly new stuff, GC ports of DC stuff and few new games, PS2 wtv and ports whenever, gba new stuff.Xbox did get games planned for DC tho
>>12023642Let's stop pretending Rare wasn't already cooked. Starfox Adventures sucked and they didn't exactly produce any master pieces on og xbox or 360 either.
>>12023536it's far more likely that microsoft would have shuttered all of those studios and none of them would exist at all today. microsoft is where game studios are put to pasture.
>>12023273I think I read somewhere how Sega got some money from MS. I also think that large parts of Sega's staff also really disliked Sony and maybe Nintendo a bit too. Xbox also had the strongest hardware at the time which was really useful for some games.
>>12023273They didn't really go "all in", they developed some big games for the Cube too. But yes this >>12023289 Microsoft saw them as an in to the Japanese market along with Tecmo and they had great hardware so they did business stuff and made it happen. Sony's relationship with Namco was big for tipping the scales in their favor so it's not like Microsoft thought of it completely by themselves.
>>12023273they signed a deal in 2001-2002 it was in some tokyo game show from those years, check archives on the internet or someo vidya magaine.

>>12024636>I also think that large parts of Sega's staff also really disliked Sony and maybe Nintendo a bit too. That would track, Sega of Japan was so spiteful they pretty much killed their company than to have a different regional branch lead them to success.
>>12025148>>12024636Sega and Nintendo weren't really on bard terms in Japan, that was mostly a western thing. Also, are you guys ignoring stuff like SA2 Battle, Crazy Taxi, PSO and others on Gamecube? pS2 also got a bunch of Sega games including the Sega Ages series.
>>12024651It was only Sonic Team that supported the Gamecube from what I remember. PS2 saw mostly sequels or ports.Basically they put each title where it would sell the best. Xbox got the most experimental, new, or graphics heavy titles. PS2 saw the large sellers which would need to be there for financial reasons (VF4), or titles best suited for japanese audience (Sakura Taisen, Shining Force, Thunder Force, Nights into Dreams), or the budget games (sega ages series). Gamecube got the pedo kiddie crap.
>>12025153>SA2 Battle, PSOSonic team garbage>Crazy Taxiport, also on PS2, also on PC.>pS2 also got a bunch of Sega games including the Sega Ages series.these were japanese-only, low budget garbage ports so it makes sense to put them on whatever system was most popular in japan.
