a bad story is still a story, and it replaced level exploration and hunting for secrets with crawling through linear pipes and listening to juvenile fanfic audio logs for locker key codes

even boomers shit themselves over good stories. quit pretending like you'd be fine if the industry was just high scores, arcades, and pac-man, old man.

So Doom 1 and 2 had no stories? Just contextless violence against random monsters?

Multiplayer games like Valorant, Dota 2, and Fortnite, with minimal narrative, generate the most revenue. Stop projecting, boomer.
PD: Kill yourself.

Is there but is not important. Just like porn.
>>
>>12023973
Story is only important for RPGs and point and click adventure games.

Action games don't need stories. Doom, Heretic, Hexen, Duke, Blood etc. would be exactly as fun without any story.

Hell even newer games like FEAR and Halo would be just as fun if you took out the story.

When was this quote in relation to the release of Half-Life? The tone changes considerably depending on whether it was before or after.

>Story is only important for RPGs
Arguably some of the most important games in the genre have real basic stories that get no focus. Wizardry, the first few Dragon Quests, Final Fantasy 1, all games where the plot is secondary.
>>
ZOMG I DIDN'T EXPECT THAT HEEL FACE TURN :O
>>
>>12024060
Same for early adventure games. In Advent and Zork it was mostly "enter caves, collect treasure". Plot was secondary to the puzzles.
>>
>>12024054
It comes from the book "Masters of Doom" which chronicles the development of DOOM and is a sort of biography for Carmack and Romero. Carmack said it to Tom Hall, who at the time was writing the narrative for DOOM. The quote predates the release of DOOM. Half-Life wasn't even an inkling of an idea yet.

Not really. See roguelikes et all.

some of the best games ever made have story. games popular with npcs like phone games or souls games do welll without one but not as good as games with story.

It's worth noting that his views have evolved on it.
>"“We wanted Doom 3 to feel like a cohesive world, and the story helps set the tone for the horror. It’s not the main thing, but it pulls you into the experience in a way that makes the action more intense.”"
>-John Carmack (on Doom 3)

>“I used to be pretty hardline about stories not mattering much, but I get that some players want a world that feels alive. A good story can make you feel like you’re part of something bigger, and I’m okay with that as long as it doesn’t bog down the game.”-Carmack, 2011

>Games are getting more cinematic, and that’s fine. A story can help sell the experience to players who want more than just shooting. We’ve tried to do that with Doom 3, and it worked for what we were going for.”-Carmack, Edge Magazine 2008

>“I used to think stories were overrated in games, but I’ve seen how much some players get into them. A good story can make the game world stick with you, even if I’m still all about the tech side.”-John Carmack (Kotaku, 2010):
>>12024720
Yeah. I'm not into that specifically but a good story can make porn way hotter just like it can make playing a game more fun. Like fighting a boss can feel more satisfying when you have some emotional connection to it. And some porn is carried entirely by the plot, there's a reason some people read pornographic stories.

So it's right that game stories are like porn. Not because story is not important, but because story is optional for success. You can make porn where nobody gives a fuck about the story, they just wants to see boobs, and you can make games where people just want to shoot/jump/whatever. Or you can have a different type of experience with a story when you're in a different mood. A good game can be anything from Tetris to a Visual Novel.

Does vindicated mean completely proven wrong by history in your language?
>>
>>12023951
Insanely stupid take, seeing as Adventure games and RPG's rely pretty significantly on story, if not for the drive of the main quest, then at the very least for the ethos of the world you're inhabiting.

Also, porn is always better when there's story involved. Them's just the facts.
>>
>>12024054
>>12024132
This quote was still after games like Ultima 4, Bard's Tale, and The Secret of Monkey Island. His take back then was just as controversial as it is now. Probably even more-so back then, since story was becoming more and more prominent within video games, every year.

>"“We wanted Doom 3 to feel like a cohesive world, and the story helps set the tone for the horror. It’s not the main thing, but it pulls you into the experience in a way that makes the action more intense.”"
meanwhile doom3 is forgotten while doom2 is more popular today than when it was released

>Hell even newer games like FEAR and Halo would be just as fun if you took out the story.
If you take the story out of Halo 4, 5: Guardians, and Infinite, you might end up with a 9/10 trilogy. A great story can enhance the game a bit, but if the story is terrible, it can be so detrimental that it might ruin the entire experience.
Time has proven that Carmack was right..
>>
>>12025607
infinite had no story and it's still shit
>>
>>12024041
I'm not, you idiot. I'm just proving you're wrong: nobody cares about in-game story. People want an adrenaline or serotonin fix, and frenetic action gameplay provides that. How do I know this is true? Because those games generate the most revenue. High scores equals global Top 500, and arcade equals competitive online multiplayer.
This is the world where we live in, boomer. Social gatherings at arcades feel like a thing of the past, as nowadays anyone can get a similar, if not identical, experience simply by playing a competitive or ranked match in any game.
We are getting the same bullshit just in a different package, retard.
>>
>>12024737
During that time, id Software released Doom 3, Enemy Territory: Wolfenstein, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Quake IV, and Rage. While Doom 3, Quake IV, and Rage were major flops, both Enemy Territory titles, which focused on multiplayer, performed exceptionally well.

This reinforces young Carmack's perspective that story is secondary to gameplay and performance. It explains why nuDoom 2016 thrived by prioritizing gameplay and performance, whereas nuDoom The Goy Ages failed by focusing too much on storytelling and lore.

This is also why fans tend to value Doom 64 (not even the original) more than Doom 3 or Quake IV.
>>
>>12025608
>infinite had no story and it's still shit
It has but is so poorly written and unmemorable that your brain doesn't even bother to retain it. The same goes for that game from Obsidian, The Outer Worlds. It has a story, but it's so bad that no one who played it can even remember it.
The most important thing is gameplay and technical performance.

True, for porn tier garbage games (FPS).

I remember playing Kamidori Alchemy Meister and fast forwarding the porn parts to get back to the story and the game.
