This is a shitty thread but I think the game starts to go to shit once you get to Nova Prospect and gets worse until the end. Episode 1 pretty much redoes the worst parts of the last half of the game but good and fun.

cool tech demo, too many driving sections, no cool alien planet section and pretty boring otherwise. The beginning section of the game and Ravenholm are the best parts of the game, the rest is forgettable.

IMO the filler in the middle (specially the steamboat parts).

That and the combination of Valve being really busy with Steam and Team Fortress 2, and that after a while Gaben probably became (understandably) scared of disappointing its fans with HL3 (which was one of the most hyped games ever after maybe Duke Nukem Forever) so he chose to can the franchise.
