Finally a good question. They saved MK, MK4 + that strike force game + Sub Zero Chronicles were steaming hunks of shit that I'm pretty sure almost killed the franchise.

kicked things into the next gear very nicely. each character having two fighting styles+weapon was a cool way to add more life onto the roster. probably had the best sense of atmosphere in the 3D era of the franchise, the stages and the music were real neat. too bad it had no proper konquest mode. and the style switching combos could have been handled better. also needed more rain.

the one where devs just decided to have fun without any worry about pushing things forward. i still like the ludicrous roster in spite of what >>12027031 said, it's the kind of dumb shit you really appreciate as time goes by. air combat is a nothingburger. motor kombat is a decent novelty. the CAW mode is cool. i'll be one of the few who defend armageddon's konquest mode. i thought the different worlds were fleshed out nicely, the exploration and the beat em section could have been way worse (see: jax's game), and i actually grew fond of naive 5head taven. worst offence of the game is the generic chain-link fatalities.

i was big into mk at the time. i loved the visual style of the original arcade games and found mk4 hideous. da was also fugly as hell. the fighting also looked goofy and floaty. that being said i still played the hell out of it, even that painful ass journey mode or whatever. and i unlocked everything in the krypt. those gold/silver coins i remember were awful to accumulate. deception was a step up for sure and i basically 100% that game too. shaolin monks was definitely a fun playthru with my brother but i dont think i ever played it again. i didnt bother with armageddon because it was an obvious cash grab and i had really had my fill of the new direction they took things.

i still remember the story mode of running around the mk realms and later getting old like in fable 1.

i just wish they could had perfected the 3d combat before making it to mk9
