>>12029105Impressively Bad Translations: The Game
I was just playing Aria too
What did it actually do again?
>>12029270nvm it was written in OP I can't read.Funnily enough I had thought it was probably the one to remove knockback
>>12029273It had me going what the fuck until I looked it up. It was made even worse by the fact that some form of jump recovery is a mechanic in some games
>>12029105Aria had lots of theseLike translating Kali as "Curly"
>>12029327This is completely accurate wdym
>>12029115my fav thing from this game is when you first visit that evrai town it does this thing where everyone is happy until you try to leave and find you can't then everyone starts saying weird stuffbut the weirdest is this woman who says this
>>12029513Give her the konami code for the returning Chun-Li cameo from I.
This ability prevents damage from all direct attacks except for "Super Effective" hits.
>>12029327This is why every translator for videogames should have at least a semblance of mythology knowledge.
"this guy are sick" is the more famous example from the original f7 localization, but this one is way funnier imo
>>12029997Those aren't consequential, though. This one, though...
>>12029115>>12029513Everyone always points to the second game when the first game drops this during a climactic moment.
>>12030005leaving out the third text box is disingenuous. sure, it's still awkwardly worded, but he does fucking warn you.
>>12030020That's the point. Due to the fact that the warning is separated into two sentences, with the first sentence ending in an exclamation mark suggesting immediate action is necessary, the warning could very easily be interpreted as "attack it RIGHT NOW while its tail is up, because it's going to start countering our attacks with a laser soon."
>>12029997i'm surprised no one ever mentions this one. too busy crying ig. also is the only time she ever actually speaks? i can't remember.
FF4 has hilariously bad translation too
>>12030005>>12030020The best part is that there's alternate text depending on if Cloud or Barrett is knocked out at the time, and both of those variants ALSO are worded poorly.>If Barrett is dead, the game displays >"Cloud "It's gonna fire that laser..." >if Cloud's dead, the message instead is >"Barret "I dunno what's goin' on, but...">"it looks pretty bad.">"Let's see what it does when it's tail's up..."
>>12030138kek I didn't know this. Even so, all things considered, I still think Michael Baskett did a pretty good job with the translation - it just needed some proofreading and editing in places. AFAIK the Steam version cleans up pretty much all the errors and mistakes, and that's been backported to the PS1 version (though it does censor Tifa calling Cloud a retard, but whatever).
>tfw the laughably incorrect translation is actually an improvement
>>12030138Woolsey would have kinofied it
>>12030192FF6 is my favorite FF by a mile, but outside of the usual iconic Woolseyisms, its translation is pretty rough, though in a different way than FF7. Where FF7's translation suffers from a bunch of misspellings, grammatical errors, and some odd and confusing word choices (Sephiroth Clones), FF6 has some dialogue that is just mangled beyond sense, and that's before we get into the censorship and obscured plotlines. Slattery's retranslation is undoubtedly superior in quality, with its only downsides being that it is arguably more "boring" and that it includes a few dumb inside jokes (Cult of Cefca, something awful, etc). FF7's original translation mostly holds up with some touchups, by comparison.
obligatory
>>12030192Woolsey would have not known what to do with a game like FF7>Is that... a game set in a relatively modern day setting? How can I put in out of place anachronisms now? AIEEEEEEE HELP ME SQUARE USA
>>12030251>out of place anachronisms nowWhat exactly would constitute an in-place anachronism?
>>12029105>This item removes knockback on taking damageNo it doesn't. It lets you cancel out of a knockback animation by jumping.>>12029327Don't forget about translating Rubicante as Lubicant and Scarmiglione as Skull Millione.
Lufia 2 was shit to the point where they basically made up their own nonsensical words. For decades I wondered what a Figgoru was and always thought it was some superobscure name for a certain tool. Turns out the original name was Fig Orgel, with Fig being the game's name for the Confuse spell. The retranslation ended up calling it Confusic Box or something.>>12029327>>12030385And like some game of retard-telephone they actually based the other translations on the English one so you get shit like Kali ->Curly -> Ringel or Katar -> Cutall -> Allesschneider in German.
>>12029327They also translated “Katar” (a type of knife from the Indian subcontinent) into “Cutall”, and unlike most examples from Aria this didn’t get corrected until Portrait of Ruin.
As I always say, this game become amazing when you read all the text in Tommy Wiseau's voice.
>riverson
>>12029105Badglish
Yeah, it's a fan translation with some liberties but turning Jörmungandr into Bone Dino is just flat out retarded.
>>12030557I would almost tolerate that except in half the scenes they actually translated it correctly.
>>12030475Piggyback translations should be illegal. Either translation from the original or don't translate at all.
>>12030609And while we're at it: there was also one infamous one in Bahamut Lagoon where the FIRE-affinity spear Alsviðr was translated as, out of all fucking things, Auschwitz.Given all the other bizarre shit in BH, I guess it didn't come across as too out of place.
>>12030531holy shit
>>12030531
>>12029997No, way!
>>12030035>is the only time she ever actually speaks? It's the only line credited to her, it's deliberately unclear how much of the Man in the Black Cape (Sephiroth outside of his prison in the crater) is Jenova and how much is Sephiroth.
>>12030627kek
>>12030131This isn't even a mistranslation. There are two characters named "Eraa" and "Bagu" (Error and Bug).
>>12030131...his name is literally error even in the japanese version
>>12029997thats funny because it accidentally sort of makes sense still. "off course" meaning "leave" (go off the course). of course no one would ever intentionally say it that way
>>12030035it's literally the entire basis of that one retranslation
>>12030003ngl that quote goes hard as fuck
One of the most bizarre things I've ever seen was how they for some reason translated the NAME of Armed & Dangerous' main character, Roman, in the German version so everyone called him Römer - it's like as if you'd turn someone named Jack into "Wagenheber".What always baffled me with this is how no one like the voice actors ever questions stuff like that. It kinda reminds me how the earlier Simpsons and Futurama seasons were riddled with horrendous translations and localisations which were done by one of the voice actors and often didn't even make any sense. When asked just what the fuck he was thinking he was all like "uh... it gives the script a special flavor! :^)".
>>12030898is it gonna be on your new soundcloud mixtape?
>>12032521look anon, you try coming up with a good one-liner to shout at the invaders when you were just pulled out of a dead sleep at 2am by a blaring alarm
>>12032521why do they call it oven when you of in the cold food of out hot eat the food
>>12032521I think I need to quote that game more often in the future...
>>12030005>Attack while it is tail is up
>>12029579That's less of a "bad translation" issue and more of a "they designed the UI to only fit like 15 characters so now all the non-japanese languages don't fit in it" issue
>>12029105Sloppy censorship aside, Bionic Commando was also such a wonderful translation trainwreck, right up there with Zero Wing. And they had Hitler calling the player "a damn fool" on top of it all.
>>12032521bloody wolf/battle rangers is fun as fuck in addition to having hilarious dialogue
>>12030131There's something eternally ironic to me about the fact that Zelda 2, a game with a relatively excellent translation for its time, developed a reputation as being poorly translated all because of a (correctly translated) gag that people just didn't understand.
>>12034495It's like they can't stand the idea that the game is actually good so they have to try and tear it down any way they can>lol "if all else use fire" LMAO WHAT A WEIRD AND WACKY TRANSLATION AM I RIGHT>actually it's telling you that some enemies are immune to normal attacks so you should try using the Fire spell as a means to hut them>LMAO LMAO NOPE NOPE NOPE THE GAME IS BAD IT IS BADLY TRANSLATED SO BAD!!
>>12034495they did forget to translate bagu into bug though.
>>12029105This is why translators need to be given in-game context. In Order of Ecclesia, dogshit latin aside, the Flight Stone was mistranslated as Ordinary Stone because "ひしょう" can mean "Flight" or "Ordinary".Amusingly it was written in kanji prior to Portrait of Ruin, where it was properly translated as stone of flight.
>>12032647https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/And_you_are_lynching_Negroes
>>12032946>they designed the UI to only fit like 15 characters so now all the non-japanese languages don't fit in it" issueThen it's your job as the translator/localizer to make sure that these kinds of changes get made so you can do your job.
>>12034501Once you wise up to the fact that 80% of retranslations are like this, you just stop giving a fuck.
>>12029115I like this game a lot despite the bad translation. I tried the retranslation patch and it's much better grammatically but I also kind of really hate the translators writing.
>>12029105
>>12031140Another German "how the fuck did that happen" moment would be the intro for Freespace, although it's more of a pronunciation-issue of the guy's name than a translation one:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4ghxOW75HA
>>12035139That smokescreen was a big Quality-of-Life hack disguised as a retranslation. If you took away the enhancements, the rescript would've been much more open to scrutiny. It's the same exact trick employed by the Final Fantasy VI sluts except there isn't an accessible text editor for it.
>>12035281Yeah as bad as it the old translation is I think I rather prefer it over someone's fanfic.
>>12035321it's the thing i hate most in fan translations, where they see some NPC say some short simple line and decide it's boring so they expand it out into multiple text boxes just cause they can
>>12034908Unfortunately it may have been still in the era of "The HQ just does everything themselves and they'll apply the translation you gave them" era and the localisation team may not have had much of a say or much contact with any of the original team. The GBA games still came 4 months after in NA, so it was still around that time when same day international releases weren't quite a thing yet
>>12035384The Richard Honeywood method.
>>12035384I wouldn't mind NPC dialogue so much by itself but combined with a lot of story, dialogue and character name changes it just gets annoying fast. And yeah I know the English version changed names too, so I'm not complaining about swapping them back to their Japanese versions but calling Rinpoo "Lin" because you want to force a thematic name call back like Ryu and Nina is just as much fanfic as calling her Katt.
>>12035762The man who ruined Dragon Quest localizations. Even at its worst like in the original release of DQ7, the "Dragon Warrior" localization was still miles better.
>>12036097He only translated 8, and that game has a pretty good translation and localization. Not his fault that other people went overboard in entries like DQ4 DS.
>>12036106He still gave us those shitty new spell names and the need to make monster names some kind of pun whenever possible.
tbf i think a lot of the enemy name mistranslations were just blindly copied from ariabut yea theres a whole LOT of engrish all over the place in those gameshow fucking hard is it to contract ONE native speaker? cuz apparently it was just impossible
>>12036232>blindly copied from aria*SotN
>>12036106Regardless of whether he is the one who literally penned the text in each game following VIII, he is the one signing off on as well as giving the overall direction for them.Honeywood's mental state never recovered after soloing Xenogears and unfortunately, DQ translations are how this illness manifests itself nowadays.
>>12036106It's not retro but man DQ9's localization is so unfunny it makes me want to drop it
>>12036242And Horii ultimately doesn't care so long as the games sell. Not his problem that he doesn't know English.
>>12036237Soma is often referred to as "he does" or "he is doing" in soul descriptions and it's funny every time. I read them in an Indian accent
>>12030627
>>12029327Took me years before I caught onto that on a replay.>>12029105Maybe not "impressively" bad since it makes sense in context, but:>the entire Metroid franchise having Samus's "Barrier" suit be translated as "Varia" and sticking forever, never being fixed because people just kinda like it that way, and now Samus's most iconic suit of all time has a permanent translation error>the Bomberman franchise fucking up the "Rooeys" (they're kangaroo creatures) by calling them "Louies", which again got stuck because of the fans
>>12029327Curly!?
>>12030627>>12037596Jesus, no wonder the game got a round two at a retranslation and the guy who made it lost his marbles over the stupid bullshit in the first hack.Didn't Byuu/Near literally start working on his hack first by himself and then he got disinvited by the who's-who collab?
>>12029997off course! retired.
>>12030843>>12030850>>12034495Shh, don't explain it. I use error and bug to figure out bitches who shit on Z2 but haven't actually played it.
>>12038303I'm glad Seiken Densetsu 3 got official translations.
>>12038303>I guess it didn't come across as too out of place. It was really just more the times. People were so happy to actually get any kind of fan translation that they'd put up with a lot of flippancy. I'm not saying they were right or that it was defensible but its important to remember just how different the scene was. In the 2000s we didn't get every RPG ever made around the same time as Japan. Hell you were lucky sometimes if you knew a game even existed.
>>12035139Friend of mine looked into BoF II as a translation redo but then stopped work early on out of the realization that telling people that your text hack without baked-in casual-of-life slop is an improvement actually is a hard sell (especially after rhdn came back). I'm sure there's a basic cleanup hack that gets the job done.>>12038768>People were so happy to actually get any kind of fan translation that they'd put up with a lot of flippancy. They still do this if you're semidecent at preaching to the choir. With social media and discord servers, you can garner an "audience" by marketing yourself, and there's incentive if something like patreon is involved or if you're a bum who's desperate to put anything on your resume. Things are even more of a joke now with machine/AI tools.
>>12030627>And while we're at it: there was also one infamous one in Bahamut Lagoon where the FIRE-affinity spear Alsviðr was translated as, out of all fucking things, Auschwitz.I will now play your game.
>>12030005i love this one dearly because the thing of it is the apparently incorrect use of "it's" as a contraction, where the possessive impersonal pronoun is expected, actually corrects the mistaken translation, by mistake: "attack while it is tail's up" which can now easily be parsed as, "if you attack while we're in the state where its tail is up"
>>12038868Is there any way to play the SNES BoF games. I just want a translation that is accurate and fixes the fact that the originals were rushed badly and had to deal with the most abrasively constricting space limits for everything you can select in a menu.
>>12038950NTA but didn't the GBA ports do translation fixes (and add a dash button)?
The translation for this isn't just bad, it's a complete and utter trainwreck, so much so that when the game was re-released on Steam people were actually disappointed that it was re-retranslated properly with no option for the original. The game has 7 characters, not only does each character have their own lines both between levels and banter with bosses, but since the game is 2-player, there is also different dialog for each COMBINATION of two characters. And to top it all off, it's voice-acted too, with voice acting just as bad as the translation. Most of the lines make no sense, some lines say something different than what is written, and some lines they forgot to translate and switch back to Japanese for a single sentence before switching back. It's baffling how they could have screwed this up this bad, it almost feels like the script was just tossed into the first beta of Google Translate, except that didn't even exist back then.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8R1H26mLyw
>>12029327They probably thought she looked black based on her sprite, so they thought it was a nickname based on the fact that black people have naturally curly hair. Actually I'm willing to bet money that was exactly their thought process.
>>12038987I think the best part is that both the text AND voices have the same bizarre clipped manner of talking. Castle Shikigami 2 can't do a normal sentence, and just manages to make everything sound like it was edited down to just the barest essentials that might if you're lucky convey the faintest glimmer of a concept of a statement.
>>12029115It's like, "Tolen? The fuck's a Tolen?"They're TOKENS for a mini-game, which you might also not even get in your playthrough depending on whoever you recruit to Township.
>>12038997Here's the actual process:>underpaid translator>gets document with no/barely any illustrations to go by>doesn't even get the cartridge to play it>now a Treant is a Torrent and a Hydra Hitler
>>12038984The GBA version was the same hot mess the SNES version was.
>>12039076What?I guess it was before Final Fantasy set the retranslation standard, but this is still pretty surprising...
>>12039076i think at the very least the GBA version has a few tiny fixes like proper yes/no options when entering the fusion menu
>>12039441Nope.
>>12034908Nah, zero chance of a game back then getting dedicated resources for the localization like a bigger UI space. Just swap the text and fuck off, and if it doesn't fit make it fit.Pretty much the only reason the original Pokemon games actually have good translations is that by sheer chance they hired a westaboo who cared about doing a good job to do it (Nob Ogasawara).
the gba version of tales of phantasia turning ragnarok into kangaroo because the windows XP version of spellcheck autocorrects it that way was the moment where my kid brain went "wait games can fuck up the writing?"
>>12039532Don't look up the extensive modifications made to Final Fantasy VI's menus for the SNES localization.
>>12039532And then Nob got fired for getting too meme-y, so now we've got TPCI localizing everything so dryly.
>>12039532>>12039681Even Pokemon increased the character limit for the pokemon-- they were going to retain the Japanese version's 7 limit but increased it to 10.
>>12039598>bill gates of hell is even ruining your jrpgs
>>12039598Figures Microsoft would end up turning The Ragnarok into The Ragnaroo
>>12038997>oh hey that's a DURGA recolor, her name reads as KALI so... Curly?
>>12038987I swear there's one route where Hyuuga says "Bro fights rule!" when fighting the Aja brothers and then "I'm anti bro fights" when fighting Kou's brother, but I can't find them now. I guess I'll just post this instead.
>>12032634charcoal likely
>>12029115Still love it. "Fan" translations can go wank themselves.
>>12029327Translator just had a distaste for jeets and their mythology. Nothing wrong with that.
>>12041851>jeetsWhy are newfags so obsessed with Indians?
>>12041864Why are you indian?
