Is this the biggest 'what if' in history? Basically you could only play it in a physical arcade, and they never released it anywhere else.
>>
Some arcade games were like that, some are still undumped to this very day.

not uncommon, some games just had no place on a home console due to lack of interest, or landing at the wrong time and would end up with a serious NES demake at best.
>>
golden axe: revenge of death adder really surprised me with sega not wanting to port it. It did very well at the arcade and would have made a decent 32x or saturn game.
"but its not 3D, we dont want it!"

X-Men: xmen (xmen2pj is recommended over the US release)
Spider-Man: spidman
Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder: ga2
Beavis and Butt-Head: Buy a plane ticket to Illinois, spend $15 to get into a place called the "Galloping Ghost". Or hope that a rogue arcade technician magically dumps the ROM and MAME devs somehow make it work in MAME. Have fun.

I remember there was a pretty cool looking Aliens arcade game that never got any sort of home release AFAIK
>>
>>12029651
It was supposedly planned for the 32x along with a bunch of other games. segaUSA had spoken to several companies and had plans but SegaJapan came along and demanded everything stop for the 32x because they wanted to push the saturn
>>
>>12029651
I wonder how the Saturn port of this is coming along? There hasn't been an update in a while.
>>
>>12030017
Never heard of that. Would have been pretty downgraded given the 32 megabit maximum of the 32X and the fact that most companies went with 16 megabit carts to save money. Shame the project wasn't moved to the Saturn, that and Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder should have been on it. Hopefully that homebrew port is finished soon.
>>
>>12030028
Its stuff I've read online over the years.
Sega of America actually wanted the 32x to be successful and not end up like the mega cd because they were essentially forced into making it by Sega Japan.

They were going to use additional chips in carts that might have needed them (vr racing on md for example) because they wouldn't have any other option aside from downgrading certain games.

We might have gotten aliens, avp, asterix, alien3 the gun, better ports of sf2 and mk but sega Japan pulled the plug on the 32x because they were scared of the ps1 and rushed out the saturn in desperation.

It's just random bits I've read online over the years such as how segaamerica were on bad terms with alot of publishers/devs thanks to Japan forcing out the saturn out of nowhere and forcing full stop on the 32x. Everyone was angry. Especially 32x owners because we bought a product that got abandoned in less than 5 months.
Now imagine your capcomUSA and you've been speaking to Sega of America for 3 months about games planned for that system. Then your told all that was a waste of time
>>
>>12029651
It's not unusual for licensed arcade games to be unported.
>>
>>12029660
Sometimes the rights were split up between console and arcade, so they couldn't release a console port if they wanted. Konami had the simpsons arcade rights, but not console. So they ended up porting it to the pc because technically it wasn't a game system.
>>
>>12030076
This is like the copiest Genesis cope I've ever read. Donkey Kong Country released 3 days before the 32X, deliberately designed to use more colors than Genesis could do. Your choice was a mediocre but still decent platformer that ran on a stock SNES with high-color, or buying a 32X for $160 so you could play one of its 4 launch games, Doom, Star Wars Arcade, Corpse Killer, or Virtual Racing. If you've never played it before DKC is a 15~20 hour game, but on 32X the only launch game you won't beat in an afternoon is Doom. 32X was dead on arrival in all regions.

Or actually dead before arrival. Because as early as 6 months before release the CEOs of EA and 3DO were publicly mocking the 32X at events. They didn't even need to see it to know. The whole concept of the 32X was a stupid idea only morons could dream up. Sega of Japan only approved it because Sega of America put their foot down and absolutely refused to wait for the Saturn. SoA employees were taking clandestine meetings with Nvidia employees and trying to develop a better Saturn to win at internal politics against the Japanese. SoA was fundamentally out of touch with reality because they believed their own marketing. They pretended the Genesis was 1991 hardware with a 1992/3 release because that was their best season. They had an irrational fear that Sega fans would get mad about a "2 year life cycle" for the Genesis. SoA always intended to focus on some other console than Saturn because Saturn's release didn't fit their imaginary 8 year Genesis life cycle. SoJ finally told them to fuck off.

Arcade ports were DoA on 32X because it can't output more than 320 horizontal lines. Putting half a Saturn on top of a Genesis does nothing to improve the video resolution. Mortal Kombat games were already hitting 400 horizontal lines. Sega's own games in 94 and 95 would have close to 500 lines. The solution wasn't expensive 32X carts, it was marketing the Saturn as the arcade at home, which they failed at.
>>

>you could only play it in a physical arcade
Sega made two hologram games that can only exist in specialized cabinets from 1991. You'd have to buy an entire arcade machine for $10k + shipping to ever play them again (not that they were very good). Good fucking luck finding someone that can repair a 34 year old hologram reflective panel made in Japan.

No, I played it a few times in an arcade in 1991. It has worse input lag than Dragon's Lair and it had slower gameplay than a choose-your-own-adventure book.

I played them both. Probably spent $20-$30 trying to beat Time Traveler. It's a novelty like Dragon's Lair. You don't really control anything, it's just choosing a direction at a specific time.

Holosseum is a very crude fighting game (like a Street Fighter 2 knock off, World Heroes, Fighter's History etc) with only four tiny, hard-to-control holographic fighters to pick from. The 3D effect can't be captured on camera very well but there are videos of the gameplay.

https://youtu.be/SAbiDId96gY?si=NKa-eeq9ejaCdWXG

Both games relied heavily on the hologram gimmick like Dragon's Lair did with full motion video.

tbdesu it's probably a licensing consideration, licensing for marvel characters was all over the place in the early 90s especially
still odd that they didn't go with other spidey-associated characters though, someone like spider-woman, sandman, silver sable or morbius could have been fun semi-heroic picks from the era
to be fair though i reckon it gives the game some charm, like how that one data east avengers fighting game has crystal and fucking thunderstrike on the base roster while iron man was only an assist lol

Punisher Genesis is absolutely dire. A SNES port could've been big, but they probably dared not even try fearing possible Nintendo censorship.

>>
>>12031858
At this point they just weren't porting this genre and like AVP it was no challenge with a crippling sprite limitation stuck on.
>>
>>12031858
>Punisher Genesis is absolutely dire.
Yeah.
>A SNES port could've been big, but they probably dared not even try fearing possible Nintendo censorship.
It would have been trash just like Final Fight and Captain Commando. SNES can get the colors down so it would look good but it just can't handle the number of sprites needed, especially not big sprites like Capcom games tend to use. It would be 3 enemies max, 4 if you make it 1P(yuck). You'd probably need a Super FX chip get the number and size of enemies you'd need to do it justice, shame they would never spring for such a cart.
Genesis was a botched port, Streets of Rage 2/3 shows it could have been done better but it would still be a noticeable downgrade in everything. Sega CD would be even better, Final Fight actually turned out well. 32X would be best as it would have both the expanded color pallet and the CPU to put 6+ enemies on screen in 2P mode but basically no one owned that sooo... lol.
This game really needed a PS1 / Saturn port to really get it right.

It's exaggerated. The worst i've ever seen at GG was a guy getting a handy from some chick in his car. I saw them in the arcade about five minutes later and I tried avoiding all of the games that she touched. I still think there was a little cum left on Dig Dug though.

You say that like it's a bad thing.
>>
>>12032429
Capcom NES demakes were great overall, they made entirely different games with the IP.
>the above menitiond bionic commando was fantastic
>Willow NES was an action RPG that is right up there with crystallis as the best of the 8bit era, while the arcade is a forgotten run and gun shinobi/rolling thunder clone
>Strider is nothing like the fast paced action of the arcade/genesis. It became a non-linear action game with backtracking, NPCs, and an interesting story. A cyber-spy thriller more like the strider manga.

Not capcom, but rygar became an open world adventure game with NPCs as well.

>>

That was partially due to Nintendo demanding that third parties "enhance" their home ports to increase the value in NES/Famicom releases, trying to rectify a problem they began seeing after shit like Ghosts n' Goblins and Ikki happened. Turned out for the better too, because it made a lot of games better in the end like Ninja Gaiden, Double Dragon, Gun.Smoke, etc.
>>
>>12030645
This. I also have both of them on my PS3 still. Been ages since I played either of them. They're not quite as fun when you're playing them alone.
>>

I still remember the time I got to the end of House of the Dead. I had limited quarters still left in my pocket and a group of about 10 other people had gathered around to cheer me on. Actually beating an arcade game was an event and everyone there wanted to see it happen.
>>
>>12032265
You laugh but there really are "people" that fuck and cum inside of the games. I have a friend that is a total degenerate. This guy would hump the tv whenever Pam Anderson was on Baywatch. He told me that he went to Galloping Ghost and came inside of the Ninja Turtles game. Said he reached inside his undies, took a big glob of what he had onto the tip of his finger, and smeared his cum in the coin slots like he was rubbing boogers into a carpet. I can't confirm or deny he did it, since i haven't been to Galloping Ghost in about a year now, but I'm inclined to believe him. We met back when I used to live in Skokie.

Most of the time. Sometimes though, you'd encounter an asshole. One time I entered the arcade and saw someone playing Gauntlet Legends. Awesome! That game is pretty tough when you're on your own, so having someone with you was great.
He was on the forest level. Things seemed fine, until a runestone appeared. I grabbed it. The guy lost his shit. He was at least 4 or 5 years older than me and he just started badmouthing me nonstop. A friend of his came over and asked what was going on and he started telling his friend about what happened, cussing about me the whole time while he did it. He was pissed because he needed just 1 more Runestone and I grabbed it, screwing him over.
Except I didn't. The runestones you have gotten already are able to be seen on the screen. See my pic. Each runestone occupies a specific spot. The one that he was missing, was also a runestone that I was missing. I eventually had enough of him and yelled back, pointing out this fact. He got quiet after that. Never even had the decency to apologize. I had a pocket full of quarters ready to go and didn't bother to continue. Called that guy a jerk and left when my character died.

>The 4 players games in the arcade were amazing to play with friends
Cadash 4 player.
Warrior
Ninja
Wizard
Cleric

My buddies
Who played D&D with me did a full four player playthrough once qnd only once. It was a memorable arcade experience as it was the first real arcade co-op RPG until Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom came out 7 years later. Unlike gauntlet there were shops and quests and you could grind for XP. Buying hourglasses bought game time either through in game
Gold or real money.

The home versions of cadash are gimped. Genesis eliminated the ninja and cleric, and TG16 had all four classes but only 2 player support, and a huge graphics downgrade.
