what's the best Star Wars retro game?

Dark forces. Pure doom kino without jedi bullshit.
>>
>>12030946

They're made across so many genres it's hard to say.

For story and immersive gameplay it's KOTOR

For Jedi action stuff, it's Jedi Outcast/Jedi Academy (with Jedi Knight as a close runner up for me, but some people will put them the other way round)

For FPS, it's Dark Forces

For flying, it's probably Tie Fighter - with Rogue Squadron as the arcade option

I've never really dived into the RTS options, but it's probably Star Wars Galaxies?

For true retro goodness, there's also the original Atari arcade cabinet and the SNES platformers.

In my view, the best rounded game in terms of fun, atmosphere and design is probably a tie between KOTOR and Jedi Knight.

OP's Picrel is cool too - but those other games are above it for me.

Galaxies was an MMO, you’re thinking of Empire At War or Galactic Battlegrounds

Dark Forces II and it's not even close.

Don't forget they also had racing games, 2 pod racers and that completely bizarre kart racer.
Anyway my vote is for Yoda Stories because no one else will.

jedi outcast is up there with mario 64 in making just the basic control of a character so extremely fun. and in a way few games have ever matched. unfortunately it's stuck in one of the worst campaigns of all time.

>worst campaigns
oh come on, it's not that bad, the initial saberless stages are rough, and the level design has some serious 90s PC jank to it, but once you accept the verticality and get a feel for things, it's the closest we've gotten to a sandbox star wars game and it nails the vibe of the OG trilogy. For me, this is the canon post-ROTJ, fuck disneywarz
also spawning an army of Lukes is always a good time
>>
>>12035595
>For me, this is the canon post-ROTJ, fuck disneywarz
Based. The Predisney canon is the superior one.
>>
I would probably go with galaxies due to sheer scale. The US military purchased the tech they used to generate the terrain for all of the planets. That game was fucking crazy for the time
>>
>>12035595
thats why you just use cheats to be able to use the saber (orange, of course) on the intro levels.

and give yourself all the force powers, max level. and turn on dismemberments.

and spawn 20 landos and spawn one reborn and watch him kill all the landos, then you avenge them.
>>
>>12030946
i am a real sucker for rogue leader.

rebel strike was worse, BUT rebel strikw had all the og star wars arcade games PLUS all of rogue leader as a co-op (which you could just play single player, let the other guy just fly in a straight line).

it was kino.

but really its jedi outcast.
>>
>>12035019
What’s so bad about the jk2 campaign? I agree it’s not as good as the DF2 campaign by a long shot (and probably DF as well), but it wasn’t horrible by any means.
>>12036292
>galaxies
It was doomed from the start because it could never fulfill the promise of inhabiting the SW universe, and they failed to balance the gameplay. Only way to do it properly imo would’ve been to have a large swath of known planets/systems fleshed out (with more as patches) with detailed, designed terrain, quests, etc., while everything else in the “galaxy” could’ve been one-time procedurally generated to fill it all in. Also, the Jedi problem was infamous in that game. Star Trek Online kind of made itself tolerable over the years, but I’d hope lucasarts could’ve done better in the mid 2000s.
>>
>>12030946
Jedi Knight
>>
>>12033481

True - The Pod Racing games are genuinely decent hovers that are really fun to play.
>>
>>12036412
>>12035595
>>12035019

My take on this has always been that JK's level design and game design is the better overall on balance, but JO and JA are just so much fun in terms of flying through the air and being a space wizard that it's still what I come back to most.

It's also still (well, last I checked in a couple of years back) got a surprisingly vibrant online and mod community.
>>
>>12030946
For me, its Total Rebel Death Simulator '95.

wtf why has no one mentioned Republic Commando?

Shut the fuck up. Bioware RPGs are the absolute lowest of the low tier RPGs.
>>
>>12033481
The N64 port for the Pod Racing game was absolutely fucking fantastic.

Loved that game so fucking much. Great level design and overall inviting gameplay to really tweak your pod easily. Most racing games make that part convoluted but it was dead simple to upgrade your shit and was so fitting for it's atmosphere in the menus and the game itself.
>>
>>12037204
so the latter
>>
>>12037223
Oh please. KOTOR makes sense with a mouse and keyboard but is absolutely fucking retarded with a controller.

I bet you're the type of faggot that defends tank controls cuz nostalgia too.
>>
>>12030946
I prefer Battlefront 1 over Battlefront 2 in all respects except for the space battles - which is for my money the only reason to play the sequel.
>>
>>12037413
aren't you supposed to be an epic boomer? complaining about tank controls is zoomer, isn't it?

at any rate, KOTOR is fantastic on an Xbox controller
>>
>>12037440
Battlefront II looks and feels cheaper
>>
>>12037446
Agreed, it's clear the budget went to new gameplay features, I suspect that perhaps they were unable to fit everything onto a DVD and had to cheap out on the maps - but I don't really know., ultimately I just plays what I likes
>>
pound for pound i think SWBF2 is probably the best one or SWBF1 depends on what you like more. the amount of replay value it has might not have any other starwars game within arms reach but it isnt like ive played them all. i may have more hours in swbf2 than any other game of all time im not sure.

idk if its cheating but if you were to add fan maps to the PC version it jst gets even better, and we judge DOOM 1 and DOOM 2 partially on the fact they have custom player made content. but anyway even without the fan maps the base game might still be the game i put the most hours into like i said. the freedom it gives you is just a lot of fun. it wouldnt make sense to call it grand theft auto but starwars, but the way you can load the game up and pick a class and just impulsively climb in any vehicle or switch classes or whatever at any moment just makes it a really fun game. you can probably play each map like 100 times before you get bored of it.

if the PC version ever gets people using custom maps i will grab that again. many of us have like 20 years of experience but because we have played each map like 1000 times its sort of boring and many aspects of the game are solved and it would be cool for the playerbase to apply those skills to new arenas within the same game.
>>
>>12037218
>The N64 port
This was the OG version IIR - so it wasn't a port, it was designed for the system. Agree, it's a genuinely good hover.

>>12038175
I'm fine with judging PC games on their modding and mapping community - it's one of the things that continues to make the game fun, and it's also one of the reasons why Jedi Outcast is so well loved (as well as KOTOR 2 - but that's perhaps a different can of worms).

>>12037441
I've been replaying the PC version on my Steam Deck, and it's not too bad actually; I do prefer MKB, but it's still really fun.

The sad thing is JK is the superior game in most ways, except for its multiplayer. Thus, a community with staying power never really formed around the game. Everyone talks about the lightsaber combat in jk2: yes, it’s great, but I always preferred the fps feel of jk, and the lightsaber being jank made sense when you remembered katarn was a noob Jedi the whole game.

It has to be the vector star wars arcade cabinet. After that probably X Wing or dark forces. Although I get there were later good games like revenge of the sith or starfighter or battlefront 1 &2, KOTOR and this
>>12037194
>Hot take: Star Wars Republic Commando
Which is a great fucking game

But when one line is retro and the other is star wars its going to be the vector star wars arcade cabinet, pic George Lucas in the one that was flown up to him by Atari for his permission to go ahead and release it.

Spielberg liked it so much he actually ordered one to play on the set for his downtime while filming Indian jones and the tenple of doom

It is THE retro Star wars game and all others followed it and it was a cracking game as well and hard to experince without thenoriginal aracde cab because it had a quite unique vector CRT and flight yoke controls. After that it has to be X wing because that was the first really massive star wars game and it was released in 1993 and again, it was an abolute peach of a game. After that, probably dark forces in 1995.

Fuck disney for killing star wars, it only lives as retro now.
>>
>>12030954
fuck no.
>>
>>12038854

I wouldn't describe the lightsaber combat in JK as jank personally; I think it all works exactly how it's supposed to. It's just the saber combat in JO is really polished and makes JK's combat look quite primitive by comparison.

JO and JA are much more built around the saber combat in a way that JK isn't quite as much, but JK is a much better balanced shooter with much more effectively designed levels.
>>
>>12037440
>I prefer Battlefront 1 over Battlefront 2
why?
>>
>>12037194

I keep meaning to play this. Maybe this weekend it will happen!
>>
>>12039064
>jank
I should have specified: using the saber in jk is pretty cool, and it works well for most of the game, but saber-to-saber combat is rough. Jk2 smoothed that out with combat event triggers.
>level design
Absolutely jk has great designs. Those first few levels totally hooked me as a kid. The mots asteroid levels were also very nice. Jk2 was mostly fine; a few of its levels really stand out, but nothing like jk, where each one feels very expansive and detailed. Academy is very basic, and a lot of the levels feel like they were designed for a game targeted to younger children, like droidworks. JK also has the best puzzles of the DF/JK games, no question.

>>12039073
Its good alight if you like FPS you control a squad of four and have to coordinate them as well as just gunplay I really enjoyed it. Althought on steam I had to fuck around with it to get mouse sensitivity low enough and good fullscreen resulution, it was not hard to get running nicely though, just the mouse was way to fast on default.
>>
Kotor. The one where Kyle gets his powers back. The one where you’re a Jedi temple student.
I want to say I liked that one where you’re a storm trooper and you have a squad you can order to open doors or hack computers. But I might have just liked it cause it was the only game I could pirate and make work on my shitty pc at the time.
>>
>>12039072
They are both really good, I enjoyed the fighter combat sections in 2 as well. Also the whole journal monlogues are kino

I swear I got the scream in your own voice monlogue on PAL Star wars battlefront 2 on the PS2 but the interenet says it was only in the demo but I never had the demo. Wrong time line again.
>>
>>12039072
Battlefront I is more polished.
>>
>>12039207
lmao
>>
>>12039072
A big part of it is the maps and units - the maps in I are much (much) better than those in II, but also I prefer the units and just how the game plays generally. I don't care much for II 'unlocking' of units or even really playing as the 'heroes' I just want to be able to pick whatever I think is fun at that time and go off.
>>
Just mentioning star wars empire at war if you like RTS
>>
It's probably already been said, but Star Wars Arcade.
