What are your favorite Mega Man or Mega Man-like games outside of the main series (1-11) and the main titles in the X series (X-X8)

Side question: Why haven't we gotten a 3D Mega Man game in the vein of the classics?
>>
>>12031995
My favorite is Mega Man 2.
>Side question
3D wouldn't improve the classic Mega Man formula in any way
>>
>>12031995
>classic
9 and 11, honorable mention to 4
>x
x1, honorable mention to x3 zero project
>zero
4 but apart from z1 i've only played these games once, should play em more desu
>Why haven't we gotten a 3D Mega Man game in the vein of the classics?
hard to do a run and gun in 3d, capcom couldn't figure out how to do it but i'm surprised there's nothing like sonic robo blast 2 for mega man apart from that robot master doom wad but i think that's just fighting.

The Mega Man Legends titles, Mega Man Zero 1 to 3 and Azure Striker Gunvolt 1 & 2.

Also Mega Man ZX but mostly because of Aile.

Btw I'm omitting the Copen games (ASG's spin off games feauting its Not Protoman character, called Luminous Avenger iX) because they don't play like a MM at all, whereas GV's playstyle is kind of similar.

I've been replaying the originals. Am I crazy or is 4 the worst one? It feels like the robot masters are especially annoying in that one. Their attacks feel random and really hard to dodge. I was thinking maybe I was just burnt out on the series but then I went on to 5 and that one was much better.

Legends 2 plays the closest to a 3D classic MegaMan.

Outside of Legends 1&2, my favourites have been Battle & Chase and the Power Battle series.

Battle & Chase is super underrated, the main campaign can be done 5 times and each time it gets a little harder; but you also earn your opponents car parts little by little to improve yours. Protip: play as Quickman, his innate turbo boost is OP and makes the game a lot more fun.

I also really enjoyed the Power & Fighters arcade games (and to a lesser extent the neo geo pocket port), especially the first one that I played many times, speedruns, score runs, I've done it all. In the sequel the scoring is crap because Duo scores a LOT more than other characterss so I didn't bother nearly as much.
>>
>>12033017
Did they really need to dedicate part of the screen to other racers?
>>
>>12032250
I also somewhat enjoyed Mighty No.9 for what it is. Not retro and a VERY mediocre MMlike game but it was mildly entertaining to me. Mainly because I went for the S ranks in stages.
It greatly saddens me it didn't come out as good as it could've been, as some of the characters have soul.
Plus Trinity's (the loli final boss) theme rocks.

Alas the franchise is dead in the water and will never make a comeback.

Btw I wish Capcom announced a Mega Man 12 already. It has been years since 11's release.

and it's not close at all
lockon and strafing in mostly flat levels =/= platforming and shooting while dodging shots and hazards
it's a shame no one's found out how to get the feel right in 3D. Splatoon is the closest I've found but requires gyro controls.

I actually rather enjoyed Mn9 for what it is. Not crazy for that dash mechanic to kill bosses, but i guess it adds its own flavor. I would probably be more pissed with it if i backed the KS or bought the system bricking Wii U version. I hate that the DLC shit existed though and they had no shame advertising it in the art book that came with the main game.

>>12033783
Eh, i recall the ice level and final space level reminding me the most of a classic MM stage being adapted to 3D. Both were a lot more fast paced and I remember both of them having more platforming sections.
>>
>>12031995
>Side question: Why haven't we gotten a 3D Mega Man game in the vein of the classics?
This is what EVERYBODY said when we got that piece of shit Mega Man Legends which is why I refuse to be gaslit by zoomers who pretend everybody has always loved that game.
>>
>>12031995
>Why haven't we gotten a 3D Mega Man game in the vein of the classics?
We have, its called Megaman X7. Load out a complete save so you don't move like ass and deal no damage and playa 3D stage and you've got the closest representation to the Classic/X formula as you can get in 3D, and even without X7 specific issues its ass cause the formula doesn't work in 3D, there's no way to make shooting engaging, if you had to manually aim in first person, it'd be annoying, especially while platforming, if you have lock-on, its boring, if you have no lock on and no first person, its inconsistent and hard to hit anything.
The Classic/X formula genuinely cannot work in 3D, and I shit you not X7 is actually a very good attempt at trying to make it work without making it not feel like Megaman.

>>12033569
I still wonder what would have happened if Dina didn't sabotage all the feedback from the western side of things. While people were voicing concerns about the gameplay she would mostly report that people were upset about the "lack of diversity" which she later admitted to doing.

I do too sometimes.
AFAIK the IP is owned by Comcept and Inti Creates. Btw Inafune left the former in 2024 to make his own studio so who knows what might happen with it.

On an unrelated note, Inti Creates seems to be moving away or at least taking a break from the Azure Striker Gunvolt main titles. A couple months ago they announced a new sidescrolling game named Majogami for the Switch 1 & 2 and PC.
It looks IMO heavily inspired by Kirin's style of play in ASG3 but due to its game structure it may be counted as kind of a Mega Man X like.

Mega Man X (First one)
It's perfect in every way
The graphics, the music, the runnin and shootin', the upgrades along the way, the ease of a custom password system if needed, the secrets.

There is even a new Mega Man X comic series based on the first Mega Man X that just came out a few weeks ago by Udon Comics. What a time to be alive!

>intifags can't even stay on topic for one second
>>
>>12034162
It's relevant to the topic because OP asked for Mega Man-likes.
If I could kick Capcom's CEO's ass until he decided to produce another MM I would. Until no new announcement is made the franchise remains on hold.
>>
>>12032250
>Azure Striker Gunvolt 1 & 2
I tried the first game and it played nothing like Mega Man. It felt like all you do is mark enemies to then using an annoying ugly screen feeling blue field to actually deal damage, and at least up to the point I played, also felt like an easy game with boring enemies where the fun is supposed to come from scoring. Plus there's this annoying anime chick singing and a bunch of teenage anime cringe that felt closer to something like Persona than the cool robot stuff from X onwards or the platforming mascot vibes of classic.
>>
>>12034330
NTA but yeah Gunvolt games are pretty much designed around scoring. True final boss and ending of the first game were good though, too bad they shit all over it by making sequels and having death be inconsequential.
>>
>>12034330
>where the fun is supposed to come from scoring
That's exactly how it works in ASG. If you didn't bother to play for high ranks you missed the point and most of the fun the franchise offers.

>Plus there's this annoying anime chick singing and a bunch of teenage anime cringe
IIRC you can tune in-stage conversations off before starting each stage. That aside if you don't like its aesthetic and style you should play something else. Inti Creates' titles are full of modern anime teenagers doing exactly the kinds of things that turn you off.

It is what it is. If you don't like it go replay the classics.
>>
>>12034154

>>
>>12032282
Played through the entire series, recently. If I'm honest 1 is the worst one, the controls and physics are kinda screwy and the weapons are kinda broken or lame.
5 has the bullshit broken charge shot, so maybe catharsis about that though.
>>
>>12034434
I think the first two games are enuff but now I not sure if I really played them all
>>
>>12034448
1 is fairly fun to break with the magnet gun, but yeah, it's the most bare bones of the series. The balancing is a little funky too.
>>
>>12034154
It's so bizzare how Capcom almost immediately shit the bed with the franchise and the first entry is still more or less It's peak.

The GB games are surprisingly good (with the famous exception). IV in particular is a great time - hard but fun. Only downside is you can almost always cheese the Robot Masters using the Mega Buster. But it's amazing how much cool stuff they packed in there.

Also love Legends.

I think X1-X4 were great and they were building something for X5 but by then Capcom got cheap with Mega Man games and the final product for X5-X8 was not good.

I rank them X1 > X4 > X2 > X3 >>>>>>>>>>> The rest (Not counting spinoffs like the GB games or RPG)
>>
>>12034691
X4 is pretty soulful. It's probably the first game i think of when i think "late 90s CD based Japanese anime 2D action game". The music, fmvs and even shitty dub all add to it as a package. I would probably also rank it right behind 1.
>>
>>12034631
>but that also means it's nothing like Mega Man
Ranks have been a thing in Mega Man since X5, and all were also present through the Mega Man Zero games, which btw were developed by Inti Creates.
>>
>>12034631
Intifags don't care it's not like Megaman, they MUST shill their shit games.
>>
Mega Man-like? Try Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 3. Thank me later.

Better than half the classic MM games
>>
>>12037165
Gotcha, didn't know if one did a better job with the emulation or had better extras. I'll just play it on my switch then. Gives me a reason to dust it off. Thank you.
>>
>>12031995
i'm one of the freaks who kinda likes mm5, but i have a lot of nostalgia with mm2 specifically given it was one of the first games i entirely beat
also, i feel like as much as the classic series is ripe for exploration in almost any genre or setting (with a little tweaking, you've got a solid ensemble cast with a wide variety of personalities and whatever), the series' own history seems to suggest that doing something as significant as a full shift to 3d would probably be better served with a new side series - though, the idea of getting unique special weapons and engaging in robot master fights rather than the more dungeon crawlish vibes from legends would still be pretty cool
i just worry it's the sort of thing that could get messed up really easily, and then it's mega man back in the box for another ten years lol
