as a kid rode my bike to the neighbor city just to check their gaming store and found this without any prior knowledge about it. The clerk wasnt even allowed to me because of the age restriction but I guess they did not care. I think I had fun back then but also a lot more patience for such a game with annoying mechanics. The nostalgia is positve but today I would not finish it again. Pic related was the weirdest moment of the franchise

Silent Hill F receiving 9's.

Whelp, once it sells that's the final nail in the coffin in the loss of Silent Hill's identity. Hard to cry about it though as Konami has somehow fumbled every single release after 4 and some would argue 4 as well, but I wouldn't.

Shame because it seems like most people that played Silent Hill realize what makes it what it is.

>setting simply isn't Silent Hill
>the whole point of seeing a western setting through a Japanese lens is lost
>ost has lost its somber, ethereal tones and now just sounds like generic bamboo flutes and eastern string instruments (I was stunned to find out it came from Akira)
>enemy design has, so far, just come across as more in your face horror than the abstract themed enemies from 1-3
>weird combat direction (they aren't beating the souls allegations)
>general themes the game is based on dealing with politics and sexism instead of general themes we can all relate too (guilt, isolation, etc)

How many pieces of wood can you replace before you have a new ship? Like I said though, the ship has been rebuilt for years now with various people missing the point. Just a shame to see something that will probably succeed in killing off the last of what Silent Hill was, but what it is.

Like I said though, they haven't captured what made Silent Hill what it is since 4 (Origins made a valiant effort, especially with its super rocky development), so it's not the biggest deal in the world. Shame to see it be subverted, reinvented, and it probably working with the general audience instead of ever seeing a proper next gen Silent Hill, but we were never going to get that anyways so it's just sort of a melancholy, hollow feeling.

Still, when Silent Hill means a lot to you and it helped you get through a really rough time in life, it sucks to see.

And hope silent hill 1, silent hill 3 and silent hill 4 NEVER get remakes because they will be full of woke agenda and censorship.
>>
>>12036794
2 was handled fairly well outside of the retarded changes made to Maria. I was actually surprised they kept several scenes and the designs of the Bubble Headed Nurses accurate, but like you said, each remake now of days inspires more dread than anything as it's just another chance for devs to miss the point of the games they are remaking or insert their crappy politics in places they don't belong. Maria making that comment on her old attire, for instance, has already aged like sour milk and will always stick our like a sore thumb, especially considering who she is and what she's supposed to be from a lore perspective.

Plus, nobody ever gives anything the proper REmake treatment and it's always a reimagining more than anything else.
>>
>>12036708
>Setting it anywhere else is atrocious.
I agree, especially since the lore is directly tied to the town. It kinda retcons the entire series to suddenly move the whole thing to Japan.
>>
>>12036810
They'll come up with some lore reason as to it happening (might even use aspects of 4), but no matter what it really misses the point. The location is absolutely huge when making a Silent Hill game as that's legitimately what inspired them in the first place. Also, no lie, take any screenshot of the night gameplay from F and compare it to Fatal Frame Maiden and it looks almost identical. There are so many thoughtful things that make a Silent Hill game what it is and they just missed every bit of it... but, they played ball with the western press and so now it gets 9/10's across the board.

If that chick that made a video about 2 being a secret feminist commentary is still alive, she is no doubt creaming herself about F.

>a video about 2 being a secret feminist commentary
LOLWUT
>>
>>12036875
You don't even wanna know. She misses the point completely and inserts all these modern feminism angles that wouldnt have even been around at the time of the games development. It was awful. The video went semi-viral but I can't find it anymore so perhaps she took it down or perhaps the algorithm juat doesn't like it. It's also going to be buried under the countless videos reporting on F's feminist angle now if it even still is there.
>>
>>12036808
>2 was handled fairly well outside of the retarded changes made to Maria.

Not only Maria, they also turned Angela into a fat whale.
>>
>>12036881
Yeah, after looking around I can't find it. Who knows, maybe she's one of those rare cases where she realized how stupid that movement was and washed her hands of it.
>>12036891
Angela actually looked fine outside of some really bad angles. Plus, she was always sort of "frumpy" so that never really bothered me to be honest. Silent Hill is one of the few games where the art director genuinely tried to make the characters look normal and even somewhat ugly in some instances, obviously not for any of the reasons it is done now, but because at the time it was actually quite novel to present "real" people and all their average to below average looks. Maria's outfit change was the most egregious from a lore standpoint though. I wouldn't have minded if they made it more "modern sexy" but to cover her up and have her make a comment on her previous outfit was no doubt the lingering effects of their work with sweet baby considering just how much it missed the entire point.
>>
>>12036897
And mind you, I only defend the game lightly as in, they were mostly respectful to the source material and I was surprised how much made it in and how well they did with most of it. Like anything else, the original still easily trumps it, but it was a better remake than most.
>>
>>12036881
I looked around as well and couldn't find it either lol. Only found some video essay on how SH3 displays womanhood through horror.
I mean, I guess I can see it.
>>
>>12036903
Yeah, I tried finding it for you as I just assume we all have the same morbid curiosity here, but like I said above, you aren't missing much. Just imagine a chick explaining the story of Silent Hill 2 from a modern feminist angle but pretending all of it was intended and not her just reading it into the game. It was pretty standard fare with all the usual buzzwords being thrown around from the feminist frequency era.
>>
Looking bad, it was an alright horror game, with new elements like hauntings in your apartment, the whole ghost element.

After playing the first three, it was a let down for me.
Complete empty hull of a protagonist. the other characters also feel mind forgettable and the thrown in.
Connection to silent Hill feels like "cousin of coworker was a teacher of some nurse in silent Hill". Grey, lots of grey, and not the spooky ugly one, just plain ugly. Prison could have been so much cooler.
Retarded inventory system, every ten bullets takes a slot, c'mon. Like 30 different golf clubs of which I used none.
Retarded monkeys that get pissed when getting hit made me laugh not get spooked.

Then level revisiting. With a guy following you, plus a cripple woman you have to get through also. Ugh

And there are great games that have lots of problems but at least have that one special thing that makes them iconic. Well, SH4 doesn't.
6/10

>>
>>12036972
For what it's worth, Harry does act like a shut in with a genuine phobia of social situations and being too close to others (both physically and emotionally). The game does an amazing job at slipping in hints of this when reading the dialogue closely or paying attention to the environments. Hell, the whole theme of being trapped in his apartment plays into it.

anyway on topic i heavily prefer shattered memories on ps2 to sh4 for ps2. i noticed someone in here saying there is an xbox version of sh4, i may try that one out. it would still be a shitty game but sh4 had the same issue most ps2 games had here they lacked clarity and everything looked pixelated and rough/jagged around any kind of a silhouette/ contour which ruined the art design of many games

this just looks like the combat that homecoming had but worse. homecoming at least had responsive controls where if you grinded enough you could use the knife and your agility for hit and run attacks. if you stayed mobile you could take on a group of monsters with the knife by being patient waiting for the right time to strike and that was well balanced by the knife doing low damage. even that game which i only played through once i thought was a better experience than sh4. as a silent hill title? that remains to be said but i have a much much better memory of my first playthrough of that than the room.

I have never, ever been more grateful to have come up in the time period of gaming that I did than now. This is Silent Hill now. This is the top seller on Amazon. Man, we are lucky that this is not the way we were introduced to the series.

Also, she takes on cartoonishly large, generic looking enemies that would be at home in a fromsoft game later.
>>
>>12036038
How the fuck does that shit even work?
Is the evil that forms silent hill just going on holiday now?

Didn't the people who researched this play the fucking games or read up on the lore and why being in ching Chong land makes zero sense
>>
>>12037821
The sad thing about the whole new game is how many of the original project leads they got back and how few of them seemed to understand their own game. It's absolutely bizarre really. Even Akira Yamaoka's tracks sound insanely generic so far. I'm kinda stunned the more the gameplay for the game leaks. It is getting 9's outta 10's and every aspect of it just looks to miss the point while playing like some bizarre love child of a platinum game and a souls lite.

After 4 it's just one of those series where it seems like your average SH fan has a better grasp on what made the series special than anyone in the industry does.
>>
>>12037828
Is any of the actual talent that made the old games back OR is it like square enix claiming old squaresoft staff worked on rebirth?

I've seen alot of people claim shF is about female empowerment in a toxic era Japan setting and how the female MC is actually fighting against repression

Giving it a very brief glance, it looks like it's mostly fresh blood, which is odd considering that l had seen it marketed several times as having a good amount of the original team back. Guess now we'll just wait and see if the name power and journalists can successfully sell this one while being thankful that we actually got to experience the source material.

It's just shocking to see what passes as "good" every time you take a peek into modern gaming. Guess we are getting old because I'm starting to understand the "back in my day," group more and more every day.
>>
>>12037820
yeah this looks terrible, i had low expectations because videogame from 2020+ but that evade looks like a backdash from armored core (if you know you know) which are giant robots with boosters for omnidirectional movement bursts.

>>12037828
even if they got some of the old talent back i feel like a lot of those older dudes are probably worn down from how shitty the world has been the last decade+ and probably dont have the creative spark anymore. its a bad example but it reminds me of how they got anno or whatever his name was who was the director of evangelion the TV series in the 90s, the in the mid 2010s the rebuild movies came out and most people agree they suck compared to the original and the worst part is they probably had a much larger budget.

if i was a millionaire i would just try to hire a bunch of dudes who worked on some of my favorite games to make some labor of love passion project game but truthfully im sure most of them just dont have the spark anymore to make good stuff. i think a lot of the old games are products of their times, made by people who were relatively youthful and passionate still about what they made in an era that arguably encouraged creativity and experimentation more than today. (and didnt attack you every day making you feel shitty like the world now)

sorry for schizo ranting
>>
>>12037854
>Guess now we'll just wait and see if the name power and journalists can successfully

Were already seeing these fags give it 9 out of 10. These same people said the same about sekiro and how it was a return to form (Tenchu) yet it's the worst souls slop I've ever played. The only thing it took from tenchu was all the worst points from it, then lying about the stealth part.

Shf looks ridiculous with a tiny school girl fighting giant monsters. Even Japan being the setting is just so stupid. Do the devs just not give a shit?
>>
Every time I found the hole to take me back to apartment, I would go through and check everything in the apartment like the peephole into Eileen’s room, the windows, the notes that would appear under the door, etc. I love that part of the game and I think it’s the best part.

Looking through the chained door peephole mostly yielded similar scenes involving Eileen and the landlord and it began to feel very familiar. About halfway through the game, I look into the peephole and the scene is Walter walking up to the door and staring right at me. He was never seen before this and it completely caught me off guard. Fuck, it is easily the best scare I’ve ever experienced in a game. The game went to shit after this because I then had to revisit each level. I eventually quit and watched the rest of the game on YouTube. This game could use a remake but they need to keep the apartment gameplay untouched
>>
>>12037871
>i think a lot of the old games are products of their times, made by people who were relatively youthful and passionate still about what they made in an era that arguably encouraged creativity and experimentation more than today. (and didnt attack you every day making you feel shitty like the world now)

110% that, plus the budgets for development back then allowed for a ton of creative risks. Like I said, I'm becoming more and more grateful we came up in the generation and can appreciate games from it. I know some younger guys who only play retro like we do, but some just can't get into them due to the graphics and change in design philosophies from the past.
>>12037875
It's honestly shocking. They must have super played ball with the various agendas to get those 9/10's. Every time I try and play devil's advocate in my own mind to come up with some defense for this sort of gameplay and presentation and the final scores its getting I just can't. Even if it played incredible, the animations and gameplay style is so awkward for the kind of game Silent Hill is and should be that it just breaks any sort of immersion into the horror atmosphere, and that's just one issue right off the bat.

Absolutely bizarre.
>>
>>12037895
Some are paid to give good review scores.
Some are told if you leave a negative review or an unfavourable one that you will be black listed and never given a key again.
Some actually love the company and will praise something even if its shit.
If you DO leave a mixed or negative review then some companies hire people to hound you constantly to change or remove it.

If your actually genuinely honest about games and you tell people a game is shit, why its shit, how the devs can fix it - You will mostly receive shit for it.

It's also people who get their self worth out of the entertainment they consume, so if you attack a thing they enjoy they feel like it's a personal attack against their very being. I've got a friend like that and it's bizarre. He like every new thing and you have to tiptoe around calling any media trash as he takes it as the deepest cut.
