How did boomers play Doom 2 or Quake keyboard only without tearing their hair out?
Boomers didn't play those games. Also it wasn't a problem unless you were literally retarded.
>>12036064Both of those had vertical aim assist enabled by default. The controls made the mouse optional as well as only a 2-button 1-axis controller. It wasn't until Quake 2 and UT99 that mouse aiming in 2-axis became more common.
>>12036069Boomers were too busy shining their Camaros.
I played Doom and Doom 2 keyboard only. Some of the traps in Doom 2 are more difficult to manage, but it's not that bad. You get used to it.That said, I much prefer using the mouse, keyboard only is hard on the hands.

Dad’s bald.
Doom and Quake had mouse support on launch. So did Wolf3d for that matter.
What key do you use to shoot?
>Everyone born in the 80s and before is a boomer>Even though the reality is that most of iD shooter players at the time were gen Xers or early millennials at the leastI hate this
>>12036064That's a small monitor
>>12036113you dont use the keys to shoot, you use the guns
>>12036169more like>everyone older than me is a boomer>everyone younger than me is a zoomer
>>12036064>WASD for movement and strafing>Thumb always on space for interaction>Index finger on ctrl for shoot>Middle finger on right arrow key for looking right, ringfinger on left key for looking leftThis setup works really well once you get used to it as long as you don't have tiny babby hands.

>>12036064i play doom 2 with a 2-stick gamepad lmao
I don't recall how it was to play Quake without a mouse, but I do remember the first time a friend advised me and another kid to "turn on the mouse" from options. We didn't fully grasp what he meant until we did.Or maybe that was Duke 3D.It was 1998 anyway. Obviously we tried if wheel+pedals worked too. Good times.
>>12036220Not hard to believe 29yos made up alot of Doom’s playerbaseBoomer is correct, no?
>>12036201WASD emerged in the competative quake community in 1996, it was not needed in doom where the arrow keys were good enough. Quake had shift key to run and space to jump, and WASD let you reach these. After quake popularized it, later fps began to ship with WASD as the default.Doom had very basic flat horizontal maze runner movement with no jumping or vertical challenges at all. WASD wasnt really useful to most DOOM players in this era.
>>12036245Nah, I'm pretty sure a lot of them were younger than 29, mostly ranging from 15 to early 20s. iD was literally made by mostly Gen Xers
>>12036261How do you left your fingers quick enough to aim in time in hard levels in plutonia
My solution was to never strafe.
>>12036271I dont remember any issues, i beat both doom and duke nukem when they were new using just the default arrow keys, no mouse. The games got hard later but I didnt find anything impossible.
>>12036220Zoomer begins in 2000.
>>12036274Same. I never strafed, neither in Doom nor Wolf3D
>>12036220>>12036245i'll give you newfags a little history lesson. in 2018 one sperg went around to a bunch of boards spamming pic related with the OP being "that 30 year old boomer that still [some board-specific activity]" that's how the wojak *oomer meme was born. now boomer basically has 2 meanings here: its real definition of being generation that was born between '46-'64, but then also milliennials that started arriving in their 30s, were beginning to feel the effects of aging, and were starting to understand some of the sentiments their actual boomer parents held.
Arrow keysI remember being taught WASD and mouse for Doom 2 multiplayer on Dwango. Before that I had played Doon and Duke single player on keyboard with the arrow keys.
>>12036306Thats is crazyHow do the find and look and down in its impossible level in white on tripbomb room on duke?
>>12036301>*cracks white monster energy*>*sip*>2018, yeah that takes me back
>>12036284>>12036306I used the num pad with the num lock off for Duke, since it gave you more keys within easy reach. Duke's default keys felt like they were made for it too with num pad five to center view etc.
>>12036301I know of the lore, I just find it retarded, it got tiresome after about a month or so.
