Were videogame related web comics really that big during the early 00's?
Did any of you guys seriously read or followed CAD or Penny Arcade back in the day?
>>

web comics were pretty massive prior to youtube and streaming video, they really were some of the only shareable forms of visual media you could drop a quick link to in a message board post or whatever to get your point across
>>
They spawned enough interest that there were whole conventions around them and the artists of said comics would be huge stars at various conventions, comics posted everywhere and sometimes officially included with some games. I guess PAX is still running, but otherwise everyone got tired of "Epic gamer webcomics" and most web comics in general, aside from occasional butt hurt over stonetoss.
I really don't think anyone really cares about comic strips any more past that, aside from some /co/ users and those 2 or 3 times recently when Garfield comics got uploaded without the black layer.
>>
There was a time where every webcomic was about gaming and nerd shit, or was a furry webcomic. Now every webcomic is a political cartoon or a furry webcomic.

VGcats had some rough early years.
>>
>>12036429
A friend introduced me to VG Cats in the early 2000s, I didn't think much of it, but then I found 8-Bit Theater. I used to check it daily for updates and I still like the humor.

I read Penny Arcade for a long time.

Only read Penny Arcade from time to time. The one I really liked was 8-bit Theater.
>>
Penny Arcade, yes, CAD no. VG Cats and 8-bit Theater were more popular than CAD with people I knew. Even Megatokyo was.

Not exactly retro as this was around 2013 or 2014, I remember going to Connecticon and there was a kiosk for Ctrl-Alt-Del, and the guys there were in pokemon trainer cosplay and talking to neighbors. They were giving away copies of Analog and Dpad issue 1, and I snatched one (They were free after all).
>>

CaD never interested me, but I was big on Penny Arcade for a long time. They had a podcast which was fun. Though honestly can't remember why I stopped following them.

I've never been into them and I've been on the internet since 9600 baud. My sister did send me a link to 8bit theater and I read a bit, but dropped it without telling her.
The only webcomic I thought was funny was DM of the Rings, but it's tabletop/movie based and not vidya.

I don't read any videogame webcomics anymore, I just cringe when I think back on them now. Especially Bum Tickley.
The only webcomic I still read from the 00s is Perry Bible Fellowship (but is not focused on videogames.)
>>
>>12037096
Dobson's style is very "early webcomic", there was a lot of this anime influenced type stuff going around. Part of why he got a reputation for never improving is he was still doing this stuff in the late 10s. By comparison, at that time the RPG World guy had his own TV show and his art was totally different

early internet humor was a very different beast. You of course had people just shamelessly ripping off Simpsons jokes, but sites like Newgrounds and the ability to host your own comic easily really did create a new frontier of humor. For better and worst it was certainly not boring and really did have an exciting feeling as the new generation were making their voices heard. Even early youtube feels like so long ago.

Used to read PA all the time but once they started doing Pax or whatever their con was they seem to be less and less based. I’m assuming they are full on blue hair dyed transitions at this point but I haven’t checked in on them in years. It was fun playing on their wow server back in the day. People complain when celebs take over a server but I still have video of beta vanilla wow where me and 2 other rogues stopped Asmongold and his goons from killing Rexxar in Desolace and taking out his friends on their way to shadow fang keep to fuck w their grind. I can’t remember which side I was on when PA chose their server because they did it opposite another popular web group so both sides had “big” names playing so you could fuck w either.

No, he's just using the wrong medium for that wall of text. It belongs on his livejournal, not in a visual medium like a 4-panel comic.
Hell, even expanding it to more panels and showing more visual examples of what he's text-spewing about would have been an improvement. But no, wall-o-text and 4 pathetically static poses.

Dull, uncreative, and not amusing at all.

I lost track of B-Bit Theater pretty quickly, but I'll always have a soft spot for it because it introduced me to Bangai-O.

Thanksgiving 2001, 8-Bit Theater posted a special strip saying that Bangai-O was the best game ever. I saw that, believed it, and asked my brother to get me Bangai-O for Christmas. He did (used, in a new jewel case), and we played it off and on together until we beat the game a few months later. It's still one of my favorite games.

i used to spend half my free time reading shitty sprite comics in the 2000s, anyone remember bob & george or sonic & pals?
>>
>>12041910
Yeah! Also all the ones on fireball20xl. I remember being mindblown in high school because one of the girls in the grade ahead of me was a contributor on that site. There was also some sprite comic I remember reading a bunch of in like 2003 that was probably started a year or two prior, I wish I could remember it. It's surely gone and it only exists in that "I'd know if it I saw it" space in my brain so it's rather frustrating.

More people made fun of them than unironically read them. Good webcomics were pretty scant to begin with

Kidd Radd and the fantasy comic the author did were really fun.

there was a really fun one on drunkduck called consoles and it had like 300 pages or comics but they got nuked somehow. the original story was an apartment or something with a ps2 a gamecube and an xbox that talked and their pet was a gameboy or something. eventually they replaced the characters with a wii a 360 and aps3 i think but stopped not long after that. ive never been able to find them anywhere and the creator said they dont have them anymore. creators name was something like thealmightynarf. i remember it being really fun to read in the early 2000s.

>they were relevant in the 2000s, just started losing relevancy once they obviously aged out and had families.
Doesn't change the fact they were WAY exaggerating their gamer cred as clearly shown by only knowing surface-level details about the 3rd and 4th generations (and getting them only half-right) while pretending to have "been there." Pretty much all the comics from their "golden age" are regurgitated mainstream gaming publication headlines in the form of yo mama-esque jokes and/or Reddit-tier pop culture references.

I really liked both CAD and Penny Arcade (Among some other gaming webcomics) when I was 13-14. Lost interest in reading both of them when I was in highschool though.
>>
>>12041910
Tons, I don't think any of them were any good, but it was fun just being on sprite forums and all doing different things (think I even made some one-offs that I threw up on Photobucket and Imageshack just to post on forums).
>>
I honestly don't get Penny Arcade at all. Like, where are the jokes? Why do the characters look so ugly?
It's not even funny-bad like CAD. I just feel like I'm missing something.

Yeah, they were a big deal. Somehow I started reading CAD (friend recommended it?) and in the very beginning it was just some dude’s comic about video games. However as time passed I distinctly remember telling my friend that it was starting to get seriously stupid, though I still kept reading out of some morbid fascination. When Buckley started paywalling shit like wallpapers and that god awful animation, I wrote him some hate mail that he actually responded to.

But yeah the internet still had a wild west feel to it. A lot of the video game comic people weren’t actually that talented or funny, but they were first movers in a niche that had very little competition. Buckley was able to custom build his own fucking house with the money he earned off CAD.

It is really weird that they’re clearly talking about the plain NES when the super NES would have been out already, particularly since he mentions the 32x.

I’ll legit go back read through gamer chicks sometimes just to feel like I’m in the early 2000s again. Doesn’t hurt that I loved weeaboos

You're right, wtf. I guess it's not surprising since these earlier comics had a lot of fans in tech, Achewood guy even got invited to speak at Goggle at some point.

To be fair, you needed a pretty high IQ to appreciate Penny Arcade.

I felt Penny Arcade was mostly Garfield-tier whenever a skit ended up in front of my eyes, however they were right about the Wii U's huge missed opportunity with virtual tabletop D&D (via asymmetric multiplayer).

It's the only regularly updated webcomic I still read but it's from the 2010s I believe and not really as much videogames related as it is /tg/ or fantasy in general.
>>
I think about this often.
>>
There was a loss reference (using minimalist lines, similar to pic rel) on the rifle of that transgender shooter in Minnesota last month. It was weird to see Bum Tickley still affecting cultural output with an abandoned plotline of his more than 15 years later.

Loss is an immortal meme, even when it finally got tiresome and found it's way outside of 4chan/Something Awful circles, it still finds a way to persist and still be a bit enjoyable.
