Is there any point in the game where Nayru's Love is useful?
>>
>>12040167
It's only useful if you're doing a no bottled fairy, no double defense 3 heart run. Otherwise there's no point with how much HP you have plus each bottled fairy restoring all of it automatically
>>
There's probably someone out there who really sucked at the combat but liked finding secrets and doing prep work
>>
>>12040167
Nayru's Love "not being useful" is purely a matter of the game not being hard enough by default. As soon as you add actual challenge to the game the thing becomes completely broken and basically an obviously amazing means of putting your magic bar to use. You really need hacks/custom enemies, then you will see how clearly overpowered it is.
>>
>>12040228
So no.
>>
>>12040167
maybe in a randomizer, if you get it early enough.
>>
>>12040229
i needed every heart + double defense + nayru + fairies to beat oot
>>
It's an RPG temporary buff. Many people claim they never needed it but I bet many game over could have been avoided if they remembered about it.
>>
Niche "useless" things add magic and intrigue to the world. It's like asking why gold gauntlets exist or why tunics aren't just permanent upgrades or why ice arrows exist
>>
>>12040281
All of those things would be better if they weren't trivial. Having not everything lead to something 'useful' is a perfectly fine philosophy, but all of the things you mentioned would be better if they were either harder to get or offered more reasons to use them

Yep, was thinking about starting a playthrough with these settings. Would actually have to use milk and potions (and unlike fairies, you have to use these manually)
>>
>>12040167
It has great synergy with the ice arrows
>>
It's OP as fuck. I used it to beat Ganondorf/Ganon on my last 3 heart, no double defense run. I think I goofed and only had like one fairy at the fight with Ganon, but I had a blue potion, so I just popped Nayru's Love and literally what the fuck. Link is just immune to damage for what seems like forever and you can just immediately pop it back on whenever its duration runs out. It took ages to run down my magic meter. In fact, a magic pot pops out whenever he breaks a pillar, so I never needed my blue potion. That spell was hella clutch in my situation and I'll definitely use it more in the future.
>>
Did anyone else use Farore's warping power? I always forget it's there and it's so useful
>>
>>12041540
I did in the Fire Palace as a safety net when trying to jump between pillars. Miss one jump, just warp back, cast again, and keep trying.
>>
>>12040167
I always considered invincibility power-ups like this cheating as a kid, so I never used it.
>>
>>12040167
I can think of several situations where it'd be good to use it, the problem is you get it so late in the game that you should have enough health and bottles to get through. Could've been better if you got it earlier, like right around the Water Temple or even before it so you could use it in the Dampe race, because then you'd have incentive to turn it on.
>>
>>12040439
kek iirc you can't even use magic meter when the barrier is on
>>
>>12041554
you can technically get it as soon as you get the horse because you can just fucking memorize the path through the desert instead of having to follow the ghost. it took a few tries following a guide but I pulled it off myself on my last playthrough
>>
>>12040281
>why ice arrows exist
because very late into development they decided to swap where you get them so all of the things you can technically use ice arrows on you already did
>>
>>12041971
Ok poindexter
>>
>>12040167

How is an invincibility powerup that lasts a full minute useless? Are you retarded?
>>
>>12041540
it makes the water temple go by much smoother.
There's even a door right next to every water level switch for easy cycling.
>>
>>12041554
You can get it pretty damn early, though. Dungeon order in OoT is fairly ambiguous on a practical level. To get it without cheese, all you need is Epona, the Longshot and the Eye of Truth. You can do Water Temple right after Forest Temple and the Eye of Truth is feasible once you go back in time once.
>>
>>12041964
You still need the longshot to get past the river of quicksand unless you cheese it.
>>
>>12042183
In vanilla OoT, it's just not very necessary for anything, really.
One possible use I thought for it was climbing the tower on the roof of the observatory in Lake Hylia, but the shitcrows still got knockback on you and knock you off.
>>
>>12040167
Sure. It makes you invincible. That's extremely useful.
>>
>>12042914
>That's extremely useful
It would be if the amount of damage enemies deal wasn't so inconsequential (unless you're doing a 3 heart run, but you shouldn't have to do a special challenge run for an item to be useful)

I played through Ocaina probably 20 times now and never once used it, but that's my fault, not the games. I often forget about it

It would be good on master quest or 3 heart runs, OOT is not an online ranked game, you can't cheat. Its an option, and it's use is valid

I'm extremely attracted to this character. Androgynous anime girls make me weak at the knees and I really want her to be a girl, though, is she? Her official artwork depicts her as looking quite masculine in terms of hip-to-shoulder ratio and chest area.
I wanted this to be my first zelda game specifically because of this character.

>Yeah, introverted tomboys are tight!
Very correct take.
>Sheik is literally Princess Zelda disguised as a man.
I actually already knew this since before playing the game, but I'm still curious as to how it works. Is she a woman dressed up as a man or a woman dressed up as a more androgynous woman? You have the artwork for the game where the proportions are unmistakably masculine (still would) however in later installments they add curves to her body, so I frankly don't know which it is. Was Sheik a person that actually lived whom Zelda is assuming the guise of or did Zelda create that disguise from scratch?
I don't know the rest of the plot for the game, so I'd like to steer clear of that, although I suppose it is on me for sitting in a discussion thread for a game I haven't finished yet.
So sad that Zelda's disguise turns out more attractive than herself.
>>
>>12044961
yes the intent of that is to make the female character sound more masculine.
>>
>>12044994
You're supposed to think Sheik is a man. Deep voice, bound chest, etc. Probably some magic fuckery going into the whole costume to make it more convincing by changing her voice and body proportions a bit. I think more recent Sheik depictions make Sheik look more feminine because they're not trying to hide that Sheik is Zelda the way they were in OoT originally.
>>
>>12045004
But then why mention that?

>>
>>12044994
Man, I remember I had a strategy guide for OoT, and the fucking guide spoiled the reveal. I was about 11 or 12 when I played it, and I had totally bought into Sheik being this cool badass Sheikah helping me out, so the reveal would've blown my fucking mind.

It was probably useful to 8 year old me, the problem was that my C-button slots were reserved for much more important things like Hookshot, Bow and the Ocarina/bombs that I didn't wanna be bothered to pause the game and switch my items. Probably just me being lazy? I remember only using Nayru's love in the spirit temple for fighting the iron knuckle minibosses.
>>
The earlier Zelda games had a habit of throwing more items at the game than were really necessary for progression or empowering the player, but are just for fun.

Link to the Past has a bunch of items that are functionally similar and might be needed a single time in the game, or are 100% optional but make your life easier.

Ether medallion is needed to enter Misery Mire.
Quake medallion is needed to enter Turtle Rock.
Bombos medallion is 100% optional, but is a valid way to complete the Ice Palace dungeon without collecting the Fire Rod from Skull Woods and contributes to the non-linear game design. It's also capable of melting Kholdstare's ice barrier in a single use.
All three medallions otherwise function as screen-wide attacks that help a player deal with difficult rooms. This is especially true for the upper floors of Ganon's Tower where you face multiple rooms of enemies in tough situations like icey floors.

The bug catching net is 100% optional, and lets you catch fairies that help prevent game overs, but also lets you catch bees including the secret "good bee", which is just neat. The bug catching net allow lets you deflect Agahnim's projectiles as a neat Easter Egg, and would be a recurring thing in future instalments.

The magic powder is also 100% optional, but experimentation will reveal it's actually a very useful item that can turn anti-fairies into free heals, defeat those petrifying enemies that run all over Death Mountain, and more.

Hell, the Cane of Byrna and the Magic Cape are both invincibility items, but the latter is needed to solve a puzzle to collect one specific piece of heart! Whilst the Cane of Byrna has offensive capabilities.

Manlets exist, Sheik could be one. Especially in a Japanese game made with Japanese sensibilities, since Japan is a whole nation of twinky manlets to begin with. You can hear Sheik's voice when he vocalizes when throwing smoke bombs and such, it's clearly a deep voice intended to come off as a young man. Not sure if they changed that in the 3DS version, but that's how it is in the original.
>>
>>12040167
Sheik was by far the worst and most retarded thing about OoT. A blemish on an otherwise nearly perfect game. There was zero reason to turn the titular character into a tranny ninja especially when she just gets dolled up in makeup and captured at the very fucking end anyway. I have no idea what they were thinking or what kind of pseud message they were trying to convey but it felt weird to me in 1998 and it feels weird now.

Hey friend, I got a recording of 希克's voice.
To me this voice has an unmistakably feminine flair, while still on the deeper end, like a shota voice. Many voice actresses who voice small boys in japan are women, mind you.
Sheik is a lovely, shy tomboy confirmed, fuck roons.
>>

>Sheik is a lovely, shy tomboy
She is, just don't tell Ganondorf.

The problem with the Sheik reveal is that Zelda after that point becomes the typical damsel in distress. She opens gates and helps Link deliver the final blow, which is fine, but less active involvement in the final battle than what you'd expect from "Sheik".
The boring princess didn't turn out to be a cool ninja bro; The cool ninja bro turned out to be a boring princess.
>>
>>12047163

>>
>>12048386
You aren't wrong, but the ultimate issue is that none of it makes sense to begin with. Link meets Zelda when they're children, they concoct a plan to beat Ganondorf, then one day Zelda rides off with Impa and... that's it.

Link becomes an adult, and then suddenly some "guy" appears out of nowhere and starts teaching Link songs. Then he shows up again, and again. At no point are you given any reason to trust this character or care about their motivations, they just teach Link a song and rattle off some pseud gandhi advice about water and friendship or some bullshit, and then they leave.

So Link wades through all of these hardships, and then he's finally ready to fight Ganondorf. Whoa, guess what? The weird guy who kept appearing for no reason was actually the female childhood friend, except all of that exposition meant nothing because the woman ended up being a woman afterall: helpless and retarded, begging for you to save her.

What was the point? It's like the designers realized how gay and retarded the story was at the very end of development, so they just throw the player a bone and say, "don't worry bro, we know 99% of guys playing this game are heterosexuals who just wanted a simple save the princess story to begin with, so here's the save the princess story you wanted all along", despite going out of their way to make Zelda into some kind of convoluted magical crossdresser.

The natural thing to infer is that Impa took her away and taught her some special magic to temporarily hide herself from Ganondorf, but it doesn't even make sense. Why did she need to hide as Sheik? If the only possible way she wouldn't be detected by Ganondorf was by pretending to be a boy, why did she put on her makeup and then get captured? The whole thing is dumb as fuck. I love OoT, but the story shits the bed in so many ways. Sheik never should have been included. Saria's ghost should have taught Link all of the songs.

So is Link. He's shorter than Zelda in the recent games. Japanese society doesn't really care as much about height like Western ones do.
>>
>>12048432
The Sheikah are overtly the ones who caused the downfall of Hyrule if you actually read the NPC dialogue and gossip stones, and her being le final survivor doesn't give Link any reason to care to begin with.
>>
>>12046815
What's interesting is that Sheik's screams when grabbed by Bongo Bongo's shadow are at a much higher pitch. It's like Zelda's so distressed that she breaks character.
>>
>>12048386
The series has a huge problem with this. In Wind Waker, Tetra practically becomes a different character after she finds out she's Zelda, and then she's told to hide and let Link do everything.

No. Like other people here said the game is too easy. Its why the PC port is my favorite way to play despite a couple of its shortcomings. I crank the damage to 4x and turn off all item drops so I have to get my own money from chests and grottos and then buy items and potions, or go out of my way to find the hidden fairy fountains. Playing this way also encourages me to use other items I normally never touch when I run out of ammo or want to conserve it. Farores Wind was also something I never used before but did for quicker trips to the store when I depleted my inventory.

Game is way more fun this way IMO, and actually feels like its the way it was originally designed before someone on the team got scared and made every pot and bush fill your entire health bar and inventory. I wish this was something I could do in other 3D Zeldas, I have a lot of fun playing this way.

My interpretation has always been that Sheik was a (possibly deceased) Sheikah man who'd concealed Zelda's spirit in his body for several years, and the reveal was Zelda's true body coming out of that and becoming her real physical self again, with the Triforce of wisdom providing this special power (inhabiting and releasing from the body of someone as wise as Sheik).

It genuinely never occurred to me to think otherwise until I found that the internet assumed that Sheik was a costume change and not an entire character onto himself (similar to Link's mask transformations in MM being the bodies of dead people), which I just found ridiculous and almost disturbing. It made absolutely no sense for them to simply be the same person "dressed up", with the way Zelda consistently acts like a sheltered, untrained princess who's caught up in something she can't handle herself, as opposed to Sheik's confidence, poetic speech and remarkable feats of ability.

It always basically made sense to me and the mystery of Sheik's nature and possible 'real' identity just came off as something intriguing. Assuming otherwise just makes the story less interesting and worse in every way, so as far as I'm concerned this is the right way to see the game's events, in a similar way to how Sephiroth *ought* to be recognized as being meaningfully manipulated by Jenova, even if later material tries to go against these things.
>>
>>12051345
>your brain is rotted because OoT has a retarded story

>>12051664
I like that interpretation, that Zelda would never say or do the things Sheik could. He was a vessel acting on his own honor to the Royal Family until the ultimate moment Zelda had to pass on the Light Arrows and fight Ganondorf, and his spirit and body was laid to rest in that moment in the Temple of Time.
>>
>>12051487

>>
>>12041540
It'd be a lot better if you could just use it in the overworld as well, which they ban for no good reason. Other than that it makes the Forest Temple go by more smoothly since you can warp back to the twisty hallway after getting the Floormaster key
>>
>>12048479
Sheik doesn't accomplish much of anything during the story proper, from what I can recall it's largely
>Guide Link and inform the player of story developments
>Helps Princess Ruto escape the ice so she can explore the Water Temple
>Gets tossed aside by Bongo Bongo at the moment it escapes from beneath the well in Kakariko

The story leads you to believe that Sheik is very capable, but the instant Zelda drops the Sheik disguise, she gets captured remotely by Ganondorf and is helpless up until the moment you defeat Ganondorf the first time around. Zelda does work to help you escape the collapsing tower, restrain Ganon so you can land the finishing blow, banish him to the sacred realm, and send you back home to your time.
