What was like to play Super Mario 64 back in 1997? Was it that revolutionary despite earlier 3d games? Was it a strange entry for veteran Mario players due to the new non linear gameplay and the lack of classic power ups such as the fire flower? Was the game's setting really that weird and strange?

Man, I remember it like it was yesterday. When Mario 64 first came out, sure, some people were impressed but most of us real gamers knew Mario 64 was pure 3D slopforming with camera jank and dishonest storytelling. We used those exact words. We all knew that REAL 3D platforming excellence was already created by obscure scotformers that most of the other kids were too normie to even know about. We laughed at all the NintenDorks who didn't even realize their games would be better if they only knew how to play them emulated on a PC. The Trantendo kids who actually thought that game was good when it first came out were the object of scorn and pity.
Seriously though I remember thinking from time to time about how different it was in terms of design and having completely different power ups and stuff like that, even if I wouldn't have used that kind of terminology since I was like 13 years old. But it didn't really bother me or anybody I knew since it was very cool and new and tons of fun to play. I assume there were older people who grumbled that it wasn't True Mario just people grumbled about Breath of the Wild abandoning "core Zelda values" or something silly like that. Most people did not give a shit about that stuff and just had fun.

I played the shit out of it on my brother's n64 as a kid. I did it so much that my mom got mad and accused me of "not listening to anything she said anymore" and she made my older brother hold me down while she burned my ear with a hot iron. I ended up going to the hospital. At first she told everyone that I accidentally pulled a hot pan off of the stove but her story kept changing and it didn't stop until they finally let us go. I was scared to be caught playing the n64 after that. She told me later that she kept calling for me to bring my dirty laundry in, and that I was obviously ignoring her. But I never heard her voice at all, not until she'd already come in with the iron.

It was amazing. It did lack some of the old Mario touches but normal people didn’t care. It was a totally new style of game. The open 3d world with intuitive, fluid controls hadn’t really been done before. Were hardcore gamers setting down their shmups, fighting games or jrpgs or whatever? Not really, but the graphics, control and fun of messing around in a big sandbox turned heads.

Veteran Mario players of course understood that this wasn’t really the same kind of game. I would see them more inclined to play Crash if they wanted to play something 3D at all. The real disappointment for 2d Mario fans was when Yoshi’s Story came out and was a bit lackluster. I heard more complaining then, because it was supposed to be the continuation of Nintendo’s 2d stuff.

Nobody thought the game was weird really. I mean, lots of early 3d was weird. Take Jumping Flash (the closest competitor at the time gameplay wise) as an example. It’s at least as weird.

I’d say it was revoltionary and that there werent that many similar games at the time.

I had never seen anything like Mario 64.
It blew my tiny mind. I couldn't believe how well it played, the way Mario slid around on his tummy, the little back flip when he got up, the freedom to tackle levels and navigate them in any order I chose, going back to levels with greater skill over the controls.

It was truly a magical experience

Played it in a store, cool but 2d trees like Doom and jaggies when near the columns in one area. Remember Nintendo mags were saying this was going to be as powerful as a $125k SGI workstation so I expected every game to be 640x480 at a solid frame rate.
About a year earlier at a computer show some guy was showing a video of early footage so it was not a big surprise. Graphically as a comparison the first Screamer was out on pc but you needed a monster pc to run it well.

As a kid if you told me I could be completely alone in a McDonald's playplace at night with nothing but the security lights on, I'd be ecstatic. If you told me I would just be at an empty playspace during the day with my parents watching, no other children to play with, and adult NPCs shuffling around outside the door, then it would be depressing.

The knocks are that it came out pretty late to be as revolutionary as they say, 1996, the Saturn had already been knocking out 3d games for a year and a half, virtual fighter 1 was a bigger graphical deal.
And shortly after it is completely upstaged by Banjo Kazooie in 1998
So in all yes it is a great game however it isn't even close to top 5 all time

It truly felt like the start of an adventure the first time I played it as a 10 year old in 1997. I spent a lot of spare time with it over the next year maybe two. Back then everyone I knew would be out of the house most of the time so 1 hour max gaming sessions where maybe 15 mins was spent per game. Before this quick gaming sessions with mates seeing how far we could get into one of the Sonic games or Probotector was the norm. The only thing that extended our time playing was if someone was on a roll and making it really far into the game with a room full of kids cheering them on.

I can remember getting stuck several times and waiting until I spoke to a friend at school for guidance. This was before I had easy access to the internet and I didn't even think to look for online walkthroughs when I had computer classes... if I recall correctly I spent the time I had with the school computers playing Interstate 76 and playing pokemon through emulators - again quick 45 minute gaming sessions where multiple games were run through.

Something that I still remember very clearly was booting up Lylat Wars and playing that before I booted up Mario 64. Starfox on the SNES amazed me as a 7 year old and was a favourite for many years, seeing it rendered on the N64 and actually running at a decent framerate with detailed graphics was a moment that will stick with me as my favourite gaming moment.

This Mario 64 along with Ocarina or Time are games I plan on playing though again some day. I can't think of any games since then that I can be bothered putting more time into.

I got the game and an N64 for Christmas that year.
We moved a TV to my room and hooked up the console and I immediately turned into the completely antisocial person that I am today.
I stayed in my room for the next 4 hours glued to the controller even though it was Christmas and everyone else was spending time together.
The experience was so overwhelming that I lost all sense of self, I was in the Mario world and had tunnel vision about getting to Bowser.
I remember I finally got there and kept losing to Bowser, the tail spinning mechanic just felt bad and was frustrating to me. My mom appeared in the doorway and told me it was time to eat and I just started slamming the controller up and down onto the floor and weeping in frustration.
I still to this day remember looking over at my mother and the way she was looking at me. The expression on her face was a mixture of surprise, disgust, contempt, and hatred.

I forgot to add, the contrast between that look on her face and the joyful music coming out of the TV is burned into my brain. Somewhere at that exact moment, Shigeru Miyamoto was somewhere in Japan.
