No old school Doom benefited a lot from the lack of a jump button actually. If it has it then the gameplay loop (not sure how else to put it) gets ruined. Old Doom was about strafing and weaving in and out with just your feet.

If it had to have anything that would modernize it I would maybe be okay with free aim mouse look (so being able to look/aim up and down) and also considering the pic you posted maybe an animation where Doom Guy can pick up keys or items literally right in front of him by pressing the use/open button. But Only for Doom 64. This would make sense anyways and have showed a natural gameplay progression from prior Doom games to Doom 64.

Doom 64 is still an amazing game though.

Can you elaborate on this? Assuming that Doom had been designed around jumping (and thus probably rounding out the Z-axis like in Heretic and Hexen), and the levels had been designed with that in mind, I don't see why it wouldn't still work.

Because they weren't. Even the wings in Heretic and Hexen had limitations specifically because of how they broke puzzles and encounters. There are wads that are designed around jumping but none of the original content was. That was more of a Build thing.

Sure they could have designed their game with jumping in mind but then it would change too much of the core that the classic Doom games were really all about. There is a simplicity to how these Doom games worked that made the games what they were. Adding jumping changes too much. Also what the anon said is true >>12048159
