wtf is an "OEG OEN"?
why was the neo geo so expensive? didn't they want people to buy it?
>get settlement check>treat myself and finally buy neo geo I've been creaming over for years>play blazing star and metal slug 1, have fun for a few days>every other game is a piece of shit>box it up and just take it out once in awhile to look at or play for 5 minutes and then put it backI don't regret it but it wasn't my most worthwhile investment
>>12046593The Neo Geo was the biggest victim of the fighting game craze of the 90's. Nonstop releases of the most samey genre to ever exist.
>>12046574>why was the neo geo so expensive? didn't they want people to buy it?Because it was basically a consolized arcade board that used cartridges with many, many times more storage than their home console competition and since they targeted the arcade hobbyist community their production runs were always small. The average Neo Geo fan was spending $50 on a watered down but passible port for their $150 SNES or Genesis not $650 on an AES and $200 on a game. The only market for this beast was rich people and arcade fanatics so even if you cut a hundred off the price of the console and fifty off the price of the games you won't see a significant increase in sales because it is so far above what normies were willing to pay when they had their 16bit ports. You be cutting pure profit your fanbase is willing to pay for no big sales increase. Now there was an attempt at a mass market Neo Geo, the Neo Geo CD. On the surface it wasn't a bad idea, once you paid the price of the console you could buy games on CD's which were ultra cheap to manufacture and because it used the same board the entire library could be ported with next to no effort. Where they fucked up was that they made the shell big and fancy and premium but skimped on the CD drive speed going with a 1x speed drive when every other console was going with a 2x speed. With Neo Geo games getting bigger and bigger the load times went from bad to awful. They basically knew what a huge fucking mistake they made even before the Japanese launch because they mulled over the idea of replacing the drive but by then they had already manufactured too many units. Because the load times created so much pushback they decided to delay the US launch a critical year to make a 2x version but then released the 1x version there anyway. They ended making a 2x version in a compact shell called the Neo Geo CDZ for Japan but by then they had killed off most of the good will and the console died.
>>12046564Clearly a knockoff.
>>12046708Just playing some Battle Snail on this CD console from NNK.
>>12046593>every other game is a piece of shitawful fucking taste, even if I agree Metal Slug and Blazing Star are the best in the catalog
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVaDcnm1Hk8It's a very pleasant sound
>>12046530Why is the NeoGeo intro jingle always a little different even when the bios and rom is a 100% legit dump?
>>12046742This game is overrated as shit and people only pretend to like it because of the artwork.
>>12046841>This game is overrated as shit and people only pretend to like itNo greater cope than this phrase. Going by the amount bitter people on 4chan post this in threads it actually turns out that nothing in this world is liked, no game, comic, book, TV show, cartoon or movie, they are all just pretending for some reason or another. Is it really so hard a concept to understand that some things can be good even if you yourself do not like them personally?
>>12046858Is it really so hard to understand that some people think your favorite game actually sucks?
>>12046862>Is it really so hard to understand that some people think your favorite game actually sucks?Nothing in my post implies I don't understand that and if he only said he disliked it then I wouldn't think anything of it, what he actually said was>and people only pretend to like itbecause instead of coming to terms with the fact that he doesn't like a popular Neo Geo game he needs to craft a demented worldview where the rest of the world secretly agrees with his tastes. If he was the only one who did this I would just think he is a one off weirdo, but I see it everywhere. Why do so many people think that everyone else in the world is pretending to like things they don't instead of accepting that people don't share your tastes. It is so weird.
>>12046830it was up to the devs to include the actual sound samples, or something like that. There's a version of the intro with meows for example, it's not a fully new audio piece, just the one "note" was altered in the ROMhttps://nicole.express/2021/high-speed-coding-neo-geo.htmlSame happens with the boot logo, that's why some games have GIGA POWER you could in theory make it say GIGA CHAD or NIGGA POWER or w/e
>>12046841>people only pretend to like it because of the artworkI like it genuinely and it's mostly due to the gameplay and music, IMO the graphics are a mixed bag because it mixes cartoony with realistic. If you don't like it that's ok but saying others are just pretending sounds like insecure faggotry
>>12046702>Where they fucked up was that they made the shell big and fancy and premium but skimped on the CD drive speed going with a 1x speed drive when every other console was going with a 2x speed. With Neo Geo games getting bigger and bigger the load times went from bad to awful.I once saw a vid on YouTube like at least 14 years ago showing how bad the load times are on the NG-CD, you could play an entire match in Samurai Showdown on the cartridge version before the CD variant even finished loading the exact same matchup.
>>12046882>>12046909neofags are very sensitive about their patrick swayze golf game, please understand
>Group of developers splits off from VIDEO SYSTEM because they want to make vertical oriented games>Later on they rehash Strikers 1945 I & II and make a frankenstein game for NEOGEOI guess they were desperate for cash
>>12046892Neat, I didn't know that. Thanks anon!
>>12046972>I once saw a vid on YouTube like at least 14 years ago showing how bad the load times are on the NG-CD, you could play an entire match in Samurai Showdown on the cartridge version before the CD variant even finished loading the exact same matchup. The funny part was that a lot of Neo Geo games were ported competently to the PlayStation and Saturn so you who but a dedicated Neo Geo system for your 2D arcade games got to watch a juggling monkey for 35 seconds waiting for your match to load while the people who bought a mainstream console were in in like 15 seconds.Sure the CDZ existed but all the Neo-heads who didn't have pockets deep enough for the AES rushed out and blew hundreds of dollars on NG-CD's early, punished for trusting in SNK and taunted by better consoles from all sides.
>by a complete freak accident of 2 unrelated companies inventing the same properitary memory storage system, you can use early Apple Newton memory expansion sticks as a supersized version of the AES memory cards. Kinda cool yet useless piece of trivia I guess?

>>12046593>every other game is a piece of shitBased Magician Lord non-enjoyer.
>>12047238How serendipitous
>>12046574the audience is the same people who buy 5070's and are upset about Borderlands performance or an 8k TVs for their PS5 Pro and buy the digital deluxe version of games today.if you played Samurai Shodown on Sega CD and were upset that screen scaling was missing, you'd buy a Neo Geo.>>12046702NGCD also has the best controller ever for 2d games, the digital click stick should have replace the D-Pad
>>12047023PS1 ports were all missing tons of frames of animation and in some games sprite scaling. KOF '95 is a fucking slide show on PS1the PS1 Neo ports big draw, other than you can actually find them outside Japan was the redbook audio arranged soundtracks. the NGCD wasn't perfect either, it had a sound mixing problem to go along with the load times but the games ran much smoother.we didn't get perfect Neo Geo ports until the Dreamcast came out.
