Schrödinger's Sega Saturn fan. Both omnipresent and nonexistent. Everyone knows the console's classics, yet no one has actually played them.
>>
>>12046556
This system is so overrated online. Every "Good game" is just a shitty port from another platform.
>>
>>12046556
Can the Saturn still be saved?
>>
>>12046556
I have completed
Sega Rally
Clockwork knight 1
Virtua fighter 1 and 2
Symphony of the night
Doom
Mega man x3
Tomb raider
Resident evil
Shinobi
>>
I have beaten between 55 and 59 Saturn games, most of which are exclusives or originated/better played on Saturn
>>
>Symphony of the night
>Doom
>Mega man x3
>Tomb raider
>Resident evil

You have played the worst versions
>>
>>12046580
>>12046567
>>
>>12046575
Except for maybe Doom I enjoyed all of these games on the Saturn
>>
Regular crowds hardly know about it if at all, and the idea of it being overrated is due to anons spending so much time around core gamers who like the Saturn's arcade oriented library. Those who choose to ignore its library obviously wouldn't care about it because they don't care about core gamer genres, which is most of the library.
>>
>>12046583
You would have enjoyed them much more on PS1
>>
>>12046580
NTA but RE1 and SotN on Saturn are great versions for fans of those games who want to replay it with extra/different content
>>
Most people don't want to play Japanese games, but that's where all the gold was for the SS.
>>
>>12046589
I played these games first on the ps1. But I liked the Saturn versions too
>>
>>12046592
I unironically love how Saturn games handle dithering
>>
One shitty thing about the Saturn is that it don't support lower resolution like SNES or PC engine games so you get :

A)awfull border like X3

Or

B)stretched image like SOTN

PS1 does support lower SNES/PC engine resolution so all the ports from previous generation are better on PS1
>>
>>12046610
there's a reason it failed horrificly
>>
Saturn would have done great if Sony never entered the market.
>>
>>12046592
No SOTN is genuinly awfull and the extra content is trash +even more poorly balanced (a new enemy of the Saturn version give too much exp)

Resident evil is ok but it still notably inferior to the PS1 with worse visuals and longer loading time https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkx9p3OKhTxjA6Q6SxM28VZKgB_fMZefBos?si=lFkEVZpdVfCawv9-

Why wouldn’t people have played them? The Saturn had some good games and some good hidden gems that stayed in Japan. It was great for niche genres like shmups and fighting. It had tons of arcade ports. So people into those niches loved it. They tend to be hardcore fans so they talk about it more than others.

I’d say the PSX was more versatile and consistent and the best overall but the N64 hit it way out of the park a few times.

That gen is really about genres too in my opinion, more than most others. PSX inherited the SNES jrpg thing, with Sega coming in second and Nintendo almost a no-show.

Sega had the best fighters and shmups with Sony second and nintendo a no-show except Smash.

Then for Rail-shooters you had Panzer Dragoons and the superscalers on Saturn vs Starfox and S&P on N64 as the best and Omega Boost, Vanark and Gamera on PSX as the weaker system.

N64 had the best 3d platformers and action RPGs with PSX in second and Saturn barely participating.

N64 had the best FPS games with Saturn having a few really great ones but PSX having a bunch of others, just nothing as good as Saturn Powerslave.

Saturn had the best Beat ‘em ups and then PSX and then N64 again, barely participating.

And for racing N64 had the kart racers, Saturn had the arcade racers and PSX had the realistic and was 2nd best for the other two.

So Playstation was usually 2nd best and sometimes the best system for each genre. With the other two either being either great or awful depending on the genre of games you like.
>>
I'm playing Sakura Wars 2 and I love it
>>
>>12047131
Full of crap your list

You know nothing about the PS1 library
>>
>>12046682
I love beat 'em ups and Guardian Heroes is the apex 2D beat 'em up. Plane switching, transparencies, juggle combos, sprite scaling, 60 sprites on screen at a time, six player competitive mode, multiple routes, XP based stat development, a BANGING soundtrack and you get to beat God up at the end.

No it's not as autistically hard as arcade fighters but it is challenging enough and has a shit tonne more content and diversity in play style (you can solo as a Healer, mage, etc).

Regular people have the combined IQ of a box of dildos. Who cares what they know!
>>
>>12046556
Most games of this era have aged very poorly. The only thing worth playing now on the Saturn and PS1 are the shmups, fighting games and other 2d games, which Saturn does better.

That's debatable, but my point is that the Saturn was designed to handle 2d games, whereas Playstation was designed for 3d games. While PS1 could handle 2d games, it wasn't optimized for multiple scrolling layers or large number of sprites.

Example: The Saturn versions of Capcom Fighting games like Marvel vs Capcom were arcade perfect thanks to the 4mb RAM expansion cart, which allowed huge sprites and animations to load. The PS1 versions had frames cut, load pauses, and fewer frames of animation due to memory limits.

Hijacking this shitty thread to ask: I recently installed a Fenrir to my Saturn. I've noticed that there are faint lines of distortion when games are loading from the SD card. Is that normal? If not, what might be the issue?
>>
I have no Saturn experience. Sonic Gems Collection includes the Windows port of Sonic R. Does that count? Another thing I tried. Daytona USA will play on the Sega CD as an audio soundtrack. There's also Hyper Duel and Rayforce. Those arcades work on Mame.
>>
Installed a modchip in my Saturn around 1998, from a site called Racketboy. Later, on vacation in Tokyo, I bought the OEM 1mb cart, the OEM 4mb cart, and the OEM memory cart. My disks were all burned on a Verbatim back in the good old days, they are 100% reliable. I have original controllers and the Retro-Bit licensed BT controllers. Short of installing an ODE, I'm loaded for Saturn bear.

And I play Bug!, or Bug Too! almost every time lol.

The key to enjoying Panzer Dragoon/Star Fox series is to pretend the good games are one franchise and play
Star Fox -> Panzer Dragoon -> Panzer Dragoon Zwei -> Star Fox 64
in only that order, and never play any of the other games in either series. Only then can you truly experience the true 10/10 nature of the best Rail Shooter franchise, Panzer Dragoon/Star Fox.

Unfortunately, Star Fox 64 is on a system that is otherwise a waste of time for the serious SNES/Saturn gamer.

Okay i've finished Shining force 3 episode 1

How do i transfer my save from episode 1 to 2 ?

I'm on romstation using mednafen
>>
>>12048826
By default Mednafen uses per game saves, and also adds random ID characters at the end of your save file.
>start a new game in ep 2 until you can save your game
>save your game
>now you know what the save file should be named
>copy paste your ep1 so that it matches and erases ep2's

it might be possible to have the emu use global saves rather than per game but I didn't find how. This is what my ep2 saves are named

>Shining Force III Scenario 2 (English v25.1).7299e45d99f87adf2950a63bdbd7b560.bcr
>Shining Force III Scenario 2 (English v25.1).7299e45d99f87adf2950a63bdbd7b560.bkr
>Shining Force III Scenario 2 (English v25.1).7299e45d99f87adf2950a63bdbd7b560.smpc

One of those is internal save (.bcr I believe), the other battery backup (.bkr) and .smpc should be the internal clock

It wasn't the most popular console at the time, so most people did skip it. I'm glad I didn't, and it is one of my most favorite consoles which provided lots of great memories thanks to all the games that were on clearance. There's been a resurgence thanks to greater exposure to the system's greatness recently with all the new methods to play the games.
>>
The saturn was overpriced and didn't come with any games. The games themselves were also expensive and would remain expensive while Sony would eventually flood the shelves with cheap greatest hits rereleases by the time everyone forgot about the saturn.
>>
>>12049480

>Fighting
Yeah… to me Saturn has better fighting games than all of those with VF2 or Fighting Vipers. I’d even prefer Last Bronx to some of those. And Saturn Capcom games are just so much better. But some people like Tekken that’s fine. Some of those are on Dreamcast so that’s a weird comparison.

>N64 has the best action RPG

By a landslide. We all know what it is. Nothing comes close on PSX. PSX superfans don’t like that I guess so they say “Muh Zelda”. It helps them cope.

Powerslave is better than any PS1 fps game released during the Saturn’s lifetime, and it’s way better on Saturn. Possible exception of Doom but that’s on everything. I really like Dark Forces and Disruptor and a few others but they ain’t Powerslave. Goldeneye (or Perfect Dark) is better than anything from after the Saturn died. Medal of Honor is a poor man’s version. I’d take Doom 64 over most of the early PSX FPS games too.

Crash Team Racing is just a bargain bin Sony ripoff of Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing that Sony fans pretend is the real thing. Sure, you liked it back in the day. It was like Diddy Kong Racing, but on a Play-Station! Kart racers are pretty simple normie games bit that’s Nintendo’s thing.

Sega Rally > Ridge Racers. I guess that’s just my opinion. Ridge Racer is better than Saturn Daytona.

I noticed you didn’t mention all the 3d platoformers, shmups, rail-shooters or beat ‘em ups. I stand by what I said, PSX was probably 2nd best for all those genres to either Saturn or N64 except maybe 3rd in Rail-Shooters. But of course its the jrpg console, and maybe the Third Person Shooter console too. Definitely had the realistic racers. And probably 2d platformers.
>>
>>12051974
You 're a full on delusional Sony hater

I'm sure you haven't played any of these "inferior" version or games from the PS1

Kind of funny the Exhumed comment when lobotomy developper prefer the PS1 version https://www.unseen64.net/2015/03/09/interview-brian-mcneely-lobotomy-software/ "Although the final PlayStation layouts were slightly more confined overall, they were also more refined and had better balance in my opinion. The process of revising the levels presented the chance to add more polish to the flow and pacing of the game."
>>
>>12052021
But I like Sony, or at least I like a lot of PSX games… apparently I’m just not as devoted as some people. I’ve played all the inferior versions. Some are only a little worse, some are a lot.

But its not like the PSX didn’t have better versions of a lot of stuff. In The Hunt is a great game and the Saturn version is unplayable due to slowdown. Like its really bad. Doom is somehow worse on Saturn. Should not have been released. Alien Trilogy is a tiny, tiny bit better on Playstation. I have a Saturn and PSX hooked up to the same cet so I’ve actualy ran a few games side by side and switched inputs between them. Castlevania SOTN runs way better on playstation. I like the exclusive Saturn stuff unlike some people, but the way it runs is inexusable. Die Hard Trilogy only seems like its a little better on PSX until you get to the light gun part, then its night and day.

I don’t care if Lobotomy issued an announcment directly telling people to buy the PSX version and avoid the Saturn version. The Saturn version is CLEARLY better.

Not only does it look better and run better but the levels were changed for the worse on the playsation. They’re small and condensed with less exploration. The Saturn’s were bigger and more open. I don’t like the level redesigns and the less condensed feel of it as even the dev himself puts it. The walls do the flickering thing and its missing lighting (and intro animation, for what its worth). The lighting is nowhere near as good. I’m sure the PSX version was easier to code, and it’s not terrible, it’s just not as good. I won’t tell you or the dev which version to prefer, but I think a lot of people agree the Saturn is the way to play Powerslave, and I think the console version of Powerslave is probably the best console fps released before 97.

It’s also got duller colors on ps1 for whatever reason just like what they did to Tomb Raider.
