How come it's so underrated? I see so many people enshrining Zero Mission on a pedestal, but it doesn't feel like Metroid NES at all. It feels like a spit shined Super Metroid.
cause it's kinda shit. Metroid was my favorite game as a small child, I loved the scifi themes and the "realism" that you could aim upwards. however when I went back to play it as an adult, I found it to be obnoxious and a slog. yet SMB and Zelda 1 were still great experiences. it's just Metroid that has an extremely shitty RNG for health drops, no quick way to fill up after putting in a password, no map (Zelda had one), and some intentionally annoying level design.if you must play the original, I would suggest a romhack that fixes those things.
The mandatory health farming every time you restart is probably what harms it the most. It is incredibly tedious to always restart with minimal health.
>>12047742No map kills this gameThe areas look too similar and without having a map open, it’s a slogOther anons mentioned the health stuff and that’s an issue too, but I never felt the game was hard enough to warrant that as a main complaint The map thoughAnd also the retarded “nooooo you can’t have ice and wave beams at the same time sorry!!!! Please switch to ice before tourian or just kiss the ending goodbye even though wave is objectively superior because you can’t shoot down at small enemies and wave covers that weakness!!!”
>>12047809>>12047828You are the kind of guys who complain that you have to start again every time you do a fresh playthrough of Ninja Gaiden or something.Having some kind of penalty for ending a play session raises the stakes. Spending 5 minutes doing some housekeeping on your health bar at the start of a new session is quite subtle and you complain even about that?I know it's subjective but I'm wondering how you even enjoy video games with everything on a silver platter.
>>12047742>underratedThe fuck are you talking about? It was one of the most popular NES games.Stop talking about shit you weren't alive to experience.
>>12047860Super Metroid is superior in every way. No health farming whatsoever.
>>12047860>Spending 5 minutes doing some housekeeping on your health bar at the start of a new session5 minutes every time you die to replenish health? Thats ridiculous.
>>12047924>AHHH NOT FIVE MINUTES MY ZOOMER BRAIN IS GOING TO EXPLODENoted
>>12047931are you intentionally being retarded and ignoring the fact that when you die your health is not restored? Your original post keeps saying session and "ending a play session" I just want you to confirm that you know this.
>>12047883metroid was never popular
>Reason 1: Cant into nes games. Fair enoughReason 2: The story of metroid is one of the most important part and zero mission has the same story. So this reason basically boils down to autism, because the story of metroid is only incidentally a part of it, and not something a normal person would be fixated on.
>>12047948Let's assume I'm retarded. Does this change the possibility that you can't stand a simple 5 minute penalty in video games?
>>12047965You must do boring thing for 5 minutes and this is goo because I love eating shit
>>12047974>playing the game is boring
>>12047742It was ambitious, but it feels really dated now, even second game is more enjoyable
>>12047986in every other game when you die you start at the beginning of the stage and get to play the stage again. In metroid when you die you get to sit next to the pipe that spits enemies for 5 minutes mashing the b button. Is this playing the game?
>>12047742It's a tedious game. Revolutionary for the time, extremely annoying to play right now. Super Metroid had the right idea with introducing refill stations. I'm not sure why they start you out with such low health at any given stopping point in the first place. They knew it was an issue given the presence of infinite respawn tubes, though the NES version is kneecapped even more here if I recall thanks to having worse RNG than the FDS version. Many of the areas are just identical vertical shafts to fill the map out, which is part of why it's relatively easy to lose track of where you are exactly. I don't think people would say it needed a map if there was more distinction between areas.Super Metroid addresses almost everything wrong with the original game and is one of the biggest glow-ups ever. There's a reason why Super Metroid itself is somewhat of a reimagining of the original game with more on top, and it's not too surprising that Zero Mission takes tons of cues from Super in the process of "remaking" it, even if it too is more of another reimagining.
>>12047860>>12047924Hey, retards: YOU DON'T HAVE TO FARM HEALTH AT ALLIn fact, if you farm health in Brinstar because it's easy and safe, you're WASTING TIME because you're a fucking pussy. Stronger enemies drop more health, so if you get your missiles ready and move forward carefully into Kraid's Hideout, Norfair, or Ridley's Hideout you'll pick up drops worth 10-20 health as opposed to the 5 from every enemy in Brinstar, while actually exploring further into new areas and progressing in the game. Even at the end of the game in Tourian, each metroid drops 30 health which means that if you have all 5 energy tanks you can fill ALL of them just by killing every metroid as long as you don't get hit. Just stop being a little bitch and keep moving forward. As long as you clear out every screen and don't get hit too much, you'll refill your health 2-4 TIMES faster than backing out to farm in Brinstar.
>>12048041>hey retards, beat the game and know all the secrets before playing and its easy!
>>12048052Just pay attention to how much your health refills and stop being a retarded pussy bitch.
save state chads win again
>>12048041Great post. The problem is the player not the game.
I don't play metroid at all, but I like when a game lets you go back to earlier areas to farm useful items. It keeps the areas from becoming redundant and the early game usually has the most aesthetically pleasing locales.
>>12047742The movement feels like shit compared to Super
>>12047952Your reference for the series is Other M, which tells me you're about 20 years old.Stop talking about shit you weren't alive to experience.
>>12047828grab an energy tank instead of grinding, this game is very short.
>>12047809>>12047851>a slogthis game is very very short
>>12047993the second game is awful by comparison
>the entire thread is people complaining about having no healthholy shit, /vr/ is actually bad at retro games
>>12047851did the original manual come with a map? with a lot of these old games you have to remember that they expected you were looking at the manual
>>12048370It's not that hard to make a game where you start with full health on a new life. In fact, the vast majority of games do this because making you farm for health is fucking stupid.
>>12047851The areas look too similar and without having a map open, it’s a slogThat's intentional, it's part of the challenge. The level design is actually artisanal.
>>12048502>making you farm for healthWhich game would that be? Not Metroid. See >>12048041
>>12048041also, sorry, but git gud. this isn't a game where tanking hits is really necessary except maybe for kraid. If you're getting blown up still after about an hour of game play, you suck at learning and dealing with enemy patterns. theres like 6 patterns in the game shared across multiple monsters, plus 2 bosses and metroids.
>>12047742it's genuinely awful. innovative, but a terrible slog of a game that barely even runs on the hardware it was designed for. It's crazy that we went from this, to Metroid 2, straight to Super Metroid.
>>12047742It's overrated as fuck
>>12047860>a fresh playthrough of Ninja GaidenI don't replay games
>>12048259metroid was the 18th best selling nes gamemetroid 2 was the 32nd best selling gameboy gamesuper metroid was the 34th best selling snes gamemetroid was never popular. its always been posercore.
>>12047742To me, Metroid NES feels like a primitive early entry in what would later become a more fully-fleshed franchise, because that's what it is. It has charm, but Super Metroid mops the floor with it in terms of playability.Thankfully, it's not like Metroid II WHERE YOU CAN'T FUCKING SEE SHIT AROUND YOU BECAUSE OF THE TINY-ASS VIEWPORT. Metroid II could've been much better if they used smaller sprites instead of the fuckhueg ones they went with.
I like the idea of an exploration game where a auto player location map is demphasized but the original metroid isn't really a great vehicle for it. very repetitive level structure and relentlessly combat heavy.
>>12047742I think it's because the sequels amped up people's expectations on what a Metroid game is, so people who never played the first one and going back to try it find a far less polished game. It's not like a badly designed or incompetent game, but if you've only ever played Super Metroid, it can't help but look weak in comparison, just because of how well crafted and tight that game is.The lack of a map is the biggest hurdle, which is why I tell people to get a notebook and pen so they can scribble down their own. Maybe with something like a little dice or Lego piece to serve as a marker for where you are. That's very oldschool, but this game IS oldschool, and expects oldschool.>>12047952Metroid wasn't ever too popular in Japan itself, but it was always well received in America and Europe. Overall, most Metroid titles would in usually sell about one million copies at least, sometimes two or three, and that's maybe not Super Mario numbers, but that's hardly obscure or unpopular.
>>1204918918th out of 1522 is in the top 2% of best selling Famicom/NES games.32nd out of 1042 is in the top 4% of best selling Game Boy games.34th out of 1749 is in the top 2% of best selling Super Famicom/Super NES games. If that doesn't count as popular, you are being wholly unreasonable.
>>12048052"When alien monster flies at you, you can destroy it or move out of the way, and then it won't hurt you" is not a secret.
>>12048502why would you just start with maxed out health? Zelda games dont even do that shit
>>12049194It's a unique game where later entries abandoned its qualities to do other stuff.
>>12050148What made NES Metroid unique to you? What are the stand-out qualities that later entries abandoned, in your mind?
>>12050183You can head straight to the final boss using the ice beam stashed at the beginning. The other two bosses are optional and only empower the player with 75 more missiles apiece. Spazer & Ice beam are mutually exclusive providing different benefits and you can only carry one. Energy tanks aren't meant to be acquired as soon as you find them, they are meant to be picked up when you are low on health. There's no map and areas look identical forcing players to pay attention to the grander layout of the world. Going in circles and grinding for items are concessions for players playing poorly. The only game that succeeds a lot of these designs is Breath of the Wild. I hope Prime 4 manages to be a better successor than the rest of this series has been.

>>12047860>Having some kind of penalty for ending a play session raises the stakesIs dying not a penalty?
>>12047742mandatory farming on resuming game and no map is really what people critique cause it's very same-ybut if you draw the map it's fine, it's just the former point of having to farm, when rooms give limited 'power-ups' meaning you gotta go back and forth to get up to full health
