any console. how long did you do it for? did you eventually get one?
>>
I couldn't save the game.

I completed MGS2 in a continuous 8+ hours straight because I didn't have a memory card. I was called a loser for doing that. Roughly 2006-ish.

Now normalfags spend whole nights playing whatever dogshit is popular online. Normalfags are fickle hypocritical cunts.

I beat legacy of kain and resident evil without a memory card, i left the ps1 on all weekend on two seperate weekends

ended up getting my mom to buy me one later that month

I played MGS2's Tanker and GTA3's opening missions over and over again during the now-disputed PS2 memory card shortages.
Farthest I got was the Harrier boss fight and the 2nd island through the proper mission progression.
>>
>>12050012
I mostly played Twisted Metal on it so I didnt have any issues.
It was until I wanted to play crash and syphon filter that things got bad.
I remember taking Crash 2 and play it with my sister and cousins and we took turns everytime someone died or beat an stage.
We had so much fun.
Then in Syphon Filter 2 which is 2 discs long so me and my sister played it trying to beat it.
Since we were kids naturally our parents were very anti gaming so we were only given weekends and even then a few hours to beat the game.
We eventually did and it was great.
I also remember trying to beat Medal of Honor but I think never did.
That's the extent of my playtime without my a memory card.
It was a charming time and I feel like that magic has been lost today.
Seeing what icons they would use for the memory cards gave it so much soul.
Bt fuck the 2D Digimon game on ps1. Asking 4 memory slots. Waste of money because I wasn't wasting 4 possible RE slots for it.

glad to hear it wasn't just me

Meet this older kid, stop by his back window one day to see what hes doing

>hes playing FF7
>has no memory card
>playing through the game without saving (not even sure if you can change discs without having a save) but anyway I said hold up and biked my ass 15 minutes back to my house and grabbed him an offbrand memory card I wasnt using and let him keep it

deep down I know it corrupted his save at some point, but I'd like to think he finished FF7 with it
>>
i thought you needed a memory card on the saturn since i couldn't save. After exploring the bios out of curiosity I got offered to "format" the memory. Hurray, I could actually go farther than the first scion piece in tomb raider. I still didn't use saves in die hard trilogy because the retarded save menu was buried in the option submenu. still beat the driving and on rail shooter mode but not the tower.

Also didn't have a memory card on ps1 for a few months but i had mostly played demo discs anyway since that's all i had at first.
>>
>>12050012
I played video games without a memory card for a couple decades before that card. It was great. We had various ways of saving progress, many of which were actually better than relying on a memory card. I eventually got a video game memory card a few years before your pic related was released.
>>
FF8 on a rental, had to go to london with the family, didn't have enough blocks for it and just left the fuckin thing on for a weekend, was a bit warm but fine, had to return the game on tuesday too so the whole exercise was retarded. At least I killed the t-rexaur and got to experience the Dollet landing cutscene before I had to take it back to the smelly bloke with the napalm death shirt at gametrader.
>>
>>12050056
I had a similar first experience. Me and my cousin played FFVII all the way to the Shinra HQ, game overed, then had to start from the beginning again. We had rented both the console and game and it didn't come with a memory card.

I think we both got the console for Christmas that year and both of us requested a memory card to go with it. I think that was the last year we ever visited each other and played games together, I remember playing the FFs, Resident Evil, and all sorts of things with him. We have virtually nothing in common anymore even though we still see each other at family gatherings.
>>
Does anyone remember cards that had a little digital clock-like display on them telling you how many blocks are left? I remember multiple kids at school who had them, think they were Madcatz but I can't find a pic on google.
>>

Me and my brother would restart Spyro every day and see how far we could push lol

I think we made it to Dreamweavers twice like right before bed time

I was given a late ps2 slim as a gift and Harry Potter 1-3 but no memory card so I just played as far as I could over and over

ps1 gpoice but it had level passwords so it was fine

I fine your story strangely moving. It's a mix of the kid in speilbergs poltergeist and home alone in my mind but with a hans zimmer soundtrack.
>>
>>12050594
It was the only video game anything I owned, and the ps3 was already out. My grandparents got it for me because I read Harry Potter in the school library. I think that was all they knew about me. They got me the ps1 games too and quidditch cup later.

Not memory card related but when I played Pokemon Silver as a kid the internal battery had died, and so the game wouldn't save. So I just kept my GBA SP turned on for over a week and it absolutely destroyed its battery life. Thing doesn't even last a half-hour off a full charge.
>>
>>12050632

glad you posted it in the memory card thread then

parents got me a ps1 and FF7 for christmas in 2000 and didn't realize it needed memory cards.
after my first play session i just left it on overnight while i was waiting to get a memory card.

This piece of shit?
I dont think this ever worked so cant say if it has several save slots. I remember this junk erasing my FF7, 8 and 9 progress every week.
>>
>>12050012
I still can't believe Quest 64 needed a memory card. Fuck that. I'm not buying one of those things for a console where 99% of games use battery saves. Games like Mario 64 or Zelda 64 don't even give you the option to transfer saves to a memory card, maybe then it would have some utility.
>>
>>12050716
a ton of third-party games require a controller pak, it's insane. almost every FPS besides Goldeneye and Perfect Dark needs one to save.
>>
>>12050775
basically the non Nintendo games needed one,
the controller pak sucked, the biggest problem was it was $35, $15 more than a standard PlayStation memory card, and it was prone to accidental data corruption when swapping the Memory Pak for the Rumble Pak.
>>12050012
I bought a PS1 with Wild Arms and Final Fantasy VII so the memory card was also a day one buy, still works too.
>>12050775
The Controller Pak kept 3rd party N64 games under $100, if they had battery back up they'd start creeping into Neo Geo prices.
>>
At the age of eleven, I beat the main campaign of Crash Team Racing with no memory card. I remember just letting my Playstation run overnight for a few days. Back then, I had no electric bill to pay, so I didn't care about saving electricity.
>>
>>12050843
That time cost no more than five dollars. Electricity cost is miniscule on a consumer level

When the PS2 first came out the scalper scum hoarded it, so I couldn't get one for months. Then out of the clear blue nowhere my dad surprised me with one as well as a couple of randomly-chosen games since he wasn't sure what I'd like (Fantavision and MDK Armageddon), but no memory card. He didn't know anything about that kind of stuff. But still it was a genuine surprise, and was the absolute last thing I expected on that day.

I played both games (especially MDK) without memory card for around two weeks before I went and got one. I also played one of my PS1 games that I did have the memory card for (Tomb Raider Last revalation).

I lost my pop last December to cancer, and it's happy memories like that that help me keep his spirit aive in my life. I miss you, pop.

>>12050012
I was able to finish WipEout 2097 without a memory card because that game still had a password system for tracking progression. However, it took me a while to figure that out, so by then I had already achieved gold on the first six circuits multiple times, but not all six in one session to unlock the Phantom Challenge.
For other games, I just played what I could without saving my progress. My parents eventually bought me a memory card for Gran Turismo 1, and it was only after that that I started playing JRPGs.
>>
>>12051346
I was a shy kid who felt like I shouldn't ask for shit and be grateful for what I had. Also I was way more of a book guy too. My family probably could have afforded it but as a kid all I knew was we were poor and to not bother them
>>
>>12050086
> I also remember trying to beat Medal of Honor but I think never did.
To get around the no memory card I used the level unlock cheats and beat the 3/4 missions per level. This way I could genuinely say I had beaten it, as I did finish every level, and health ammo cheats didn’t apply until you’d beaten the mission at least once, so I had to actually finish them. It was cheating, in a way, sort of but it got around the lack of memory card.

A bugs life will always be the thorn in my side because I would always get to the part where you ride the dandelion across the canyon before I’d have had enough and wanted to turn it off. Must have been about 40 times I got to that level. By the time we got a memory card I never wanted to see that game again.
>>
>>12050012
Did anybody just use a Gameshark instead of a memcard?
>>
>>12054009
There is no reality where someone could afford xploder and not a memory card

I remember gamecube memory cards being ludicrously expensive to the point that the only official one I had was the one that came with animal crossing.
>>
I played mgs1 daily, would get to a certain point in the game and then turn it off, usually around the ninja fight. next day start all over. I wasted a lot of time as a kid.
>>
>>12054117
Because Nintendo jacked the prices or they use a more expensive type of memory?
>>
>>12054084
... and? what went wrong?
>>
>>12054125
so were you like speedrunning it at that point knowing where all the items were or were you like literally retarded and exploring the same shit every time?
>>
>>12050012
Had to best mgs1 in one sitting.

Did the same for mgs2 but I had a card for the PS2.

Kinda a tradition for me with those games, besides 5.
>>
>>12054130
Official memory cards were stupidly expensive and had really small shortage for the gamecube.

There were lots of cheap 3rd party memory cards that had 3x-4x the storage of the official ones. I never owned an official memory card and my 2 3rd parties still work today.
>>

I had like 8 chinese PS1 memory cards because I didn't know how to delete saves in the BIOS so every time a memory card got too full to save anymore I'd just save my allowance and buy another one when my mom took me to the flea market every couple of weeks.
>>
>>12050012
At Blockbuster, me and my brother got to rent a Playstation for a weekend or longer, I can't remember. We were allowed to rent 4 games. We were like 12 and 13 at the time. I got the Dragon Ball GT game, this Spawn game, which both sucked. He got Deathtrap Dungeon, but best of all was Resident Evil 2. My brother managed to get up to the first main boss before dying, which reset the whole game and kind of killed the run. I barely played my two games, I just didn't like them. Had more fun watching RE2. Was really sad seeing his run end in RE2.

Years later we'd get a PS1 with Parasite Eve, Brave Fencer Musashi and RE2.

I had this thing. Supposedly let you save multiple memory card pages. But I remember it being unreliable or losing a page of saves now and then. That or I was a dumb kid that was doing something wrong.
