why do all 90's adventure games like they're out of the demented mind of david lynch on a bad acid trip
My theory with graphic design is that whenever new tools are created, artists go absolutely wild straight away.
There's no gameplay so the only selling point is spectacle.
zero realism, not afraid to give objects totally random textures
>>12050531Because David lynch movies and twin peaks were extremely popular at the time.
Imagine if there was a David Lynch film about Day of the Tentacle
>>12050531what game(s) is/are in the pic?
>>12050798Not OP, but middle column second row is Obsidianhttps://store.steampowered.com/app/2471130/Obsidian/
>DUDE ITS GOTTA BE THE DRUGS>DAVID LYNCH WAS TOTALLY DEMENTED
>>12050531It's called having an imagination and being creative
The rendering software wasn't quite there, monitors were CRT, and the computers were 16-bit.When programmers figured out that pixelated backgrounds looked like shit and that linedrawn art like Sierra's looked like bad cartoons, they had this uncanny-valley stuff to work with.so, some writers leaned into the uncanny valley to produce eldritch work. we also see it in Doom Quake Marathon even early Halo.
>>12050612Twin Peaks was cancelled because of how unpopular it was, what the fuck are you talking about?
>>12050531Is this a bait post to start a discussion, or are you genuinely asking?
>>12050531>why do all 90's adventure games like they're out of the demented mind of david lynch on a bad acid triplost edenhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xQY5LB2OLcthe dighttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WAiCsJv57ganother worldhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utrxk5_PeEYalso, acid trips don't look like that op
>>12050889Yeah it was so unpopular that they decided to cancel the theatrical prequel movie
>>12050889>Twin Peaks was cancelled because of how unpopular it wasWrong it was massively popular, it got canceled because viewers tuned out after the main plot was resolved because ABC made David Lynch close that off early due to nanagement micromanaging. It was not just popular it was everywhere for a year along with the theme tune akin to who shot jr with dallashttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCn3LYqCnrk
>>12050531Because before 9/11 people were artists
>>12050889Zoomer detected. David Lynch work was famous world wide in the nineties.
>>12050919After 9/11 art became pure marketing.
>>12050541This, but as a positive. Because adventure games aren't as limited by standard gameplay trappings (like running, jumping, combat etc) they are much less limited in the areas of setpiece or level design. Notice how there's no yellow paint shit in adventure games?
Can I get a list of good, high quality adventure games please? I've only played Myst and Riven but loved them
>see something weird>DUDE THIS IS SO LYNCHIAN
>>12050929Point and click PC games it's where you find the best art.
David Lynch was actually a fan of one of those weird games and was planning in working with the developers that made "Gadget: Past as Future" to help make a game of his own in 1998 called "Woodcutters From Fiery Ships" but the plans got scrapped.
>>12050531You have neither watched David Lynch or done acid.
>>12051214I reject your reality and replace it with my own
Lynch films were not just weird for weirds sake, they were symbolic and every piece had a purpose like KubrickThe difference is that Lynch wanted the symbolism to be decoded by the general viewers while Kubrick was only nodding to the people already in the know
>>12050541If there was no gameplay then it'd play itself. The gameplay is more thoughtful than button mashing though, so you might be confused about the words you're using.
>>12052131>symbolism to be decoded by the general viewersWhich is utterly retarded. Esotericism cannot be aimed at the general public, Lynch is a hack.
>>12050531The succest of Myst forced everything to adopt the aesthetics of Myst
>>12052161Awareness that television is being used as a vehicle for covert messages does not require knowing what those messages are, as long as you are aware that you are being shown shadows on the all the shadows will no longer captivate youIts the same effect as the 'it was all a dream' ending completely destroying any work of fiction for most people
>>12052161>Implying Lynch was after the general public>Calling him a hackThat's a dumb contrarian take if ever I saw one
>>12050914>prequel movieAh yes, that groundbreaking earth shattering box office nuke, that grossed a whopping FOUR, count-em, FOUR million dollars at the box office, you dumb fucking mutt?>>12050916Wrong. It was mediocre, at best. The only "great" viewership ratings it had were for its pilot, which are generally dismissable since pilots always do relatively well. If you compare it with other shows of the time, like Beverly Hills 90210, Roseanne, or Cheers, it was a drop in the fucking bucket.>>12050925Fuck off LARPing zoomie.
>>12053672You're full of shit, anon. Twin Peaks was massive.
>>12052249>'it was all a dream' ending completely destroying any work of fiction for most peopleisn't it odd that mario 2 didn't suffer that fate?
>>12053672>Beverly Hills 90210 Man, I'd nearly forgotten how massively popular it was at the time. An entire generation of '90s teens got their fashion from that one show.
>>12050798Right 2nd row is Drowned God: Conspiracy of the Ages
>>12052161You're mad because he's the one artist everyone loved. His secret was he loved his parents.
>>12053762No one played that game to completion, nor does anyone play Mario for its story, nor is that game even remembered as a particularly good Mario game, nor is it even a real Mario game.
>>12053951>No one played that game to completionLies, I did. t was my favorite Mario for a few years there.
>>12054127Gosh-golly-gee-willikers, I guess the only way I can defend my grand thesis now is to accuse you of being a nobody.
Fire Walk With Me bombed because it broke completely with the tone and mood of the tv series. Lynch proved his integrity by going for artistic vision instead of cash-grabbing fan service.Based Lynch enjoyers itt, everyone else stfu.
>>12050531Elaborate on that.
>>12054343Fine with me, nobody's perfect.
>>12053751Look at the numbers, retarded zoomer.
>>12054531Doesn't matter, everybody was talking about the show when it came out.
>>12050531People didn't worry about what worked or what was marketable, they just wanted to make whatever surreal shit they cooked up in their dreams/while high/whatever imagination they let run wild. The advent of CGI helped them put into media what lurked in the recesses of their mind. It was bizarre and wonderful to get hopped up on a concoction of hotsauce and shark testosterone and fight guitar battles with robots to get footage to make music videos and shit like that.
>>12050963Dark fall : the journal is my favorite, the puzzles are good and it has a great horror atmosphere with ghosts.
