What does /vr/ think of the SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive / CD RPG library?
They're alright.>Phantasy Star IIProbably the best sci-fi setting. Your enjoyment of the game hinges on how much you can tolerate sprawling dungeons. Only navigation is difficult outside of the first real dungeon springing two blasters on you party wiping you.>Phantasy Star IIIFairly unfinished. Not a terrible game, but very lackluster. >Phantasy Star IVGreat game, excellent pacing, and really comes together if you've played previous entries.>Shining in the DarknessWorth playing if you want an easier going or beginners first person dungeon crawler.>Sword of VermillionSeems like an early Genesis to bloister its library with more games and genres, but it's a charming game. First person over world and dungeons, top down action combat, and side scrolling boss battles. Combat isn't very deep, but the game is doing different things that it's forgivable. Also some great music.>ShadowrunAn amazing RPG. Does have an early game grind, but once you're over that hump it really opens up, especially with shadowruns.>Shining Force Great game and solid pacing>Shining Force 2It's good, but at times your characters either feel strong or tickle the foes. Feels like there's more opportunities in which your party in ineffective due to stat differences. I'd like to play Buck Rodgers sometime, but generally I play the Genesis for action games.
Shining in the Darkness is a nice "what if Dragon Quest was a dungeon crawler", though I thought the balancing fell flat in the end game
The bonus chapter in Shining Force CD is one of the highlights of the series imo, original themes and a real power trip
>>12051569Which ones are these?
I like the selection better than what's on SNES.
>>12051659King ColossusDark WizardBeggar Prince / Surging Aura / Lunar: Eternal Blue
>>12051650>>12051656Shining series was so fucking good.
>>12051610>>Shining in the Darkness>Worth playing if you want an easier going or beginners first person dungeon crawler.Do you recommend Arcana on the SNES too?
>>12051682Thanks, King. I will check those out. BTW I am a huge fan of the Sega's RPG library.
>>12051569Shinign Force was pretty cool. Apart from that I never cared about RPGs on the mega drive.
>>12051569Nice collection of about a dozen top quality ones, I don't have time to play 100 B or C level rpgs like the Snes has.I just played Phantasy 2 and Beggar Prince for a bit, I thought they were really good.Yes they have less colours and more grungy music than snes and that is a good thing.
>16-bit JRPGs with the highest quality and most soul on Mega Drive and Mega CD>Best quality and quantity of JRPGs in total on PlayStationMore are saying this.
do you people consider beyond Oasis to be an action-adventure or an action-RPG? love that game, the combat is almost like a beat'em up
>>12052205>most soulPC Engine CD is filled with soulful JRPGs too, unfortunately I don't speak nipponese.
Best RPG on Genny is actually Starflight.Prove me wrong.
>>12051650>what if Dragon Quest was a dungeon crawlerI cant imagine what you mean by this can you elaborate?
>>12052725Dragon Quest in first person.
>>12052729Yes I got that much, can you explain how this game is in any way like dragon quest besides the obvious it has swords and magic?
>>12052732I don’t know, I’m nta. I’ve never finished a Dragon Quest, but I liked Shining the Holy Ark.
Beggar Prince is surprisingly decent for an unlicensed game from mid-1990s Taiwan.
>>12051610>Combat isn't very deep,Collision detection is the main issue.
Today you remembered Legend of Wukong.
>>12051610>Your enjoyment of the game hinges on how much you can tolerate sprawling dungeons.Didn't the original release come with maps of the dungeons?
Is crusader centy a rpg?
>>12053471Only if you think Zelda is
>>12053463It did, but not everyone is down to constantly look at a guide and want to do it themselves.
>>12053463Not the Japanese version
>>12053471>Is crusader centy a rpg? It's closer to an action-adventure, same goes for Landstalker.
>>12052707I played this a bit and to be honest this is impossible without a manual since the game will absolutely fuck you a new one if you don't use it.Very neat and immersive. Not at all the same vibe but Pirates Gold! comes close to that kind of "Go explore this land and have fun" kind of vibe.Good pick Anon
>>12052739>>12052732I think original Anon who said Shining In The Darkness is like Dragon Quest in first person is correct. At no point in Shining In The Darkness do you play with an overhead character sprite so, yes, it's entirely first person and yes, it is if you put Dragon Quest's overhead sprite movement ideas but isolated it solely to dungeon crawling in actual dungeons.Original description is very much valid. Art style supports this too if you look at the Toriyama SNES based designs too.
>>12051569Phantasy Star IV is absolutely peak RPG for the console.Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot. Amazing story, graphics, and gameplay. Most RPGs of this era, especially JRPGs to me, are such a slog. You might be into em, I'm generally not. This game though, goddamn, absolutely captivating.I still remember the vibes of that snow planet with the way the green alien race would treat you / the way they dressed. I believe they were also present in a similar manner in the first game, which is fantastic on the Master System as well (I still cannot believe to this day that I beat that final dungeon without a map lmao, even in the 360 version with the Genesis collection).
What about the Dungeons & Dragons title? Is it good?
>>12052732The archetypicall DQ was known for>simplifying western RPG mechanics>streamlining the interface>while retaining a tight balancing that requires some grinding>with a cute yet awesome anime like art style and orchestral musicShining in the Darkness does the same thing on all counts but specifically for first person dungeon crawlers. Even the 3 characters party is similar is how DQ2 did it.
Is cyber cop a rpg
Tried Star Odyssey recently, a jrpg so unpopular the only walkthrough is watching a guy with LOOKIN' GOOD filters and broken debug on walk through walls without encounters to the next event flag on Youtube. It sure leaves you high and dry regarding exactly which npc progresses the plot, on multi location planets with insane encounter rates. The only original aspect is its 'combine the runes to make spells' magic system and it's a good while before you can even combine two, let alone 4. There's a stupid 'turn your character' menu option you have to press on everyone if attacked from the right instead of the usual left, or they do less damage while still visibly facing the same way, it's dumb. About the best thing about it is it's more graphically and musically interesting than PSIII, but it still plays slightly less well. Also Hulk Hogan joins your party, wields bigass guns and walks everywhere in wrestling trunks.
>>12053734>Pirates Gold! This game is underrated af.
>>12053750Warriors of the Eternal Sun? Yeah, it's pretty good but tough.
>>12051650Tip top proto Golden Sun
>>12054551>proto Golden SunBeyond the Beyond on the PS1.
>>12052707It's no Star Glider, but it's great
>>12053471Centy, Landstalker and Beyond Oasis are all action-adventure games, Oasis does have a level system though ("Rank"), but it's not enough to call it an RPG.
>>12054467Pirates Gold! was one of the original pricey games on the system. Somehow it's one of the only games that's gone done in price as time has gone on.
>>12051569I've only played Shining Force and Phantasy Star 4 looong ago. Both were solid despite some annoying design choices.
I've always liked Rings of Power. It's got a huge open world and feels like an Elder Scrolls game for Genesis. There are somw negatives - it runs slow, the graphics aren't all that pretty, and without a guide it can be a tough game to get theough. But if you can get past all that it's a very interesting game.
All cool except for Langrisser which is boring
