If you had a Neo Geo AES as a kid, how did you get it/hear about it?
>>
>>12052286
Neogeo was not a kids console lol

The 0.0001% of kids who had a Neogeo probably had a thousand other rich kid hobbies on top of it.
>>
>>12052295

Fair enough, basically what I'm asking is if you had a Neo Geo in the 90s and then my question
>>
>>12052306
Wasn’t trying to shit on your thread, but if you’re looking for kids who had one that’s going to be really rare.

I’d assume most people who did own one were arcade enthusiasts

>Wasn’t trying to shit on your thread
You should be. Half these threads start with such dumb questions. Neo Geo was like £600+ with massive cartridges that cost like £100+?

This is when you could get a mega drive for less than a third with carts costing way less than that. Also I do not remember a single big retailer that sold a Neo Geo.
>>
>>12052408
>£100+?
try double
>>
id be surprised if anyone here had one when they were contemporary

Within 5-10 years JP>EN AI translation will be as good as a high quality official translation, and we'll have tools to inject it in any software including emulators.

No kids had AESs. Some kids had parents who had AESs. Most people who had AESs were young men.
I'm not sure where I heard about it because everyone over the age of 12 who played video games knew about it. But I remember how I got my first one. I walked into toys r us and bought it. The concept that the AES was unknown or hard to get hold of is largely a zoomer myth.
>>
>>12052286
>how did you get it/hear about it?
I never had one, but I guess I read about it in magazines. Especially in terms of fighting games, everyone knew Neo Geo had the best. It had the biggest sprites.
>>
>>12052685
I hope I have that, except for undressing women

It was probably also a regional thing too for availability. I remember never seeing a single trace of TurboGrafx stuff where i lived in the stores in the early 90s and i especially never saw anything neogeo related outside of the arcade cabs.
>>
>>12052931
It used to be true before trannies were injected into the industry

This, troonlators will soon be obsolete

it just had fighting games. I wasn't even jealous of it.
I never had anyone to play fighting games with and I never played one period so I never cared
>>
>>12052953
>a regional thing
Worse than that it was an individual store thing. A year or so before I got my AES a friend of mine wanted an TG16. He was an EOP so never got a PCE. We drove all over the greater LA area looking for a toys r us that carried them and had them in stock. I'm sure there were plenty of toys r us in LA that never carried the AES. People in hick towns probably never had a chance to buy either locally. That's why the baby jeebus created cars.

I read a Neo Geo Freak advertising on a magazine and ordered a Neo Geo with 2 games, which granted me a 3rd-tier NGF customer level, which granted me to attend to the shredding of the games I was going to buy.
>>
>>12053504
I really want to know what was going on with that kid. What's with the oxygen tubes? Was he dying? Was getting his cover art shredded by Dion Soprano his make-a-wish or some shit?
>>
>>12052286
I had one. But I was a rich kid. Think I had one game for it.
>>
>>12053525
Dion personally shredded your game's japanese inserts and replaced it with his own photocopies with english trademarks of NGF.
He would take photos with high tier customers to publish on the NGF fanclub bulletin magazine so that kid is probably one of then.
>>
>>12053504
can someone tell me the whole story of this pic, like why is that dion dude shredding some game's insert (?)
also why does everyone seem to hate him and his group (?) neo geo freaks
>>
>>12052286
This poster, who was unborn or a child in the 90s, cannot comprehend that the typical neo-geo gamer especially aes was a young adult. Tired of these zoomers
>>
>>12053525
Dion also put NGF stickers all over carts he sold that would ruin the insert if you tried to remove and hid them on the back as a "gatcha". Passed off lots of MVS conversions to gullible Big Tymers

The kid in the headlock was terminally ill and on oxygen etc strongman Dion seized the opportunity. Poster from neo geo .com Jigen

Dion really is the NEO GEO villain, irl Geese Howard and amusing as fuck he built his empire on old games and forum tears.
>>
>>12053663
It's morally wrong to allow a sucker to keep his money
>>
>>12052286
My friends (who lived in a trailer) had one because their grandpa was a richfag. I don't think they ever had a NES, they went straight to the Neo Geo.
>>

One of the most based boomer flexes I've seen here
>Buy your worthless son in laws kids a system that's worth more than all the pickup trucks on blocks in the trailer park.
>Let him explain why he can't afford a game that costs more than 6 months rent on his singlewide lot.
>>
>>12053569
Dion considered shredding original art and replacing it with bad quality fan art to be a "premium experience"

I wish I could have gotten into Neo Geo back in the late 90s/early 2000s. I'm just a fag with an AES, a multicart and a few MVS games that I didn't buy until years later, but the culture fascinates me. Reading through old forum posts from the 2000s on neo-geo.com forums is some crazy stuff. The same dudes have been posting on there for 25+ years, they have a whole little clique with a quarter decade of gossip, inside jokes, drama and bizarre shit that the average person couldn't even begin to make sense of. I wish I was a BIG TYMER, but instead I have to sift through ancient forum messages and piece together the story of a lost civilization to fully appreciate what went on in those days. It must have been so kino to sit around watching rich autists in 2003 talking shit about each other in real time and flaunting their money. Speaking of which, here's some mandatory reading about Dion:
https://www.neo-geo.com/forums/index.php?threads/thief-scammer-liar-the-dion-dakis-story-%E2%80%93-the-definitive-retrospective.55709/
Based on the content of that thread, I can only assume that most neo owners are somehow rich yet clinically retarded, because Dion successfully ripped off dozens of them and laughed his way to the bank. Frankly, I'm gonna have to call Dion based, even if he is a greasy guinea kyke.
>>
I wish my parents got me a neo geo cd instead of any of the 4th/5th/6th generation consoles i owned
>>
>>12055729
No you don't. The Neo CD is a complete piece of fucking shit. Imagine an AES, except with even fewer games, and now there's 2 minute load times. But uhh, you can play Crossed Swords 2 and the CD player menu is kinda cool looking, I guess...

Here is another NG Forum relic: bibliophile, aka Waseem Daker.
There was even an episode of Dateline about him

Judging by the oxygen tank kid and the shit-eating grin on the plaid-wearing retard's face, I can once again only presume that the average Neo owner in those days was some kind of autismo with more money than he deserved. Dion and company did a great job of selling themselves as the next big thing, and for gullible autists lacking social skills but possessing enough cash, they could easily purchase gratification and a sense of community (in this case, by letting that human destroy their physical possessions in front of them). It kind of makes sense when you think about it, it's like those vape stores where they try to bait smokers into switching to vapes, and when you buy your first vape they have you leave your pack of cigarettes on their wall (yes, this incredibly faggy thing is real in case you didn't know). Those stinky old SNK covers were ooold neeewssss maaan, and they were instilling the metaphorical idea that, "dude, you're part of the cool club now, rock on!". Meanwhile, they were just destroying your shit, humiliating you, permanently immortalizing you as a total dumb cuck, and meanwhile hoarded their own authentic CIB copies of the same games with untouched covers so their collection value would grow by thinning the crop of authentic games. Again, I can only call them geniuses of a kind.

>>12052680
I just hope they send it to a californian after the ai translation so I can experience true quality localisation

i had a neo geo cd, games were a lot cheaper but really long load times, it had arranged music though which was cool

No idea what he still has, but assuming all of those AES carts are complete, those shelves are holding probably around $100k worth of games

So many legendary stories on that place. So many scams and cons of those rich autistics like the deal for a rare Aerofighters 3 AES variant complete with movie tier airport handoff of game for like $40k cash that turned out to be a boot. Ray Youngs !Arcade! Company that made terrific snk perfect aes conversions, like Strikers 1945 plus and the Phantom converter (first good mvs to aes conv) while also being a huge scammer. Another dude made one of those sideways converters and played the ng dupes for tens of thousands, partially repented with site owner Shawn brokering a deal to sell the product at the neo store to kinda make the marks whole again. Kyokugen Star burning a poster with a fake Metal Slug was never forgotten either. The joy when SNK raided Dions compound for copyright infringement.

Then there's deep lore with site pariahs like Master Tasuke "the Doll Fucker" autisticly posting about his seamstress skills for his dolls bloomers and putting aftermarket feet on Pioneer stereo receivers then getting roasted by site inmates.

"Again, legendary men return... "
>>
>>12053041
A great many official translations were complete garbage. Trannies making worse ones doesn't change history.
>>
>>12055984
Wasn't someone also killed over a deal gone wrong?
>>
>>12052286
I had one.
My uncle had a 3dO and purchased a neogeo. After a while I got them both when he got bored.
I had very few games, it was too expensive. Just arcade games.

Thinking about it, I just had failed game consoles: megadrive instead of snes, saturn instead of playstation, dreamcast instead of ps2 :(

But I had MVC2 on dreamcast and that was enough.
>>
>>12053041
What an extremely stupid post. Tranny-related nonsense is responsible for like 0.01% of bad video game translation.
>>
>>12056173

>Wasn't someone also killed over a deal gone wrong?
Nope. Never happened. All those movies about gangsters and tommy guns and horse heads are pure fiction.
>>
>>12056182
I had very few games. Sonic 2 and Phantasy star 4. Later I got strider.
It was not the same as the people with snes that traded cartridges and all that

I saw the neo geo once and only once at an EB when it was new. They brought in 2 consoles and 1 of eaxh of the launch games. They sat unsold for like 6 months then were removed from the store to expand the game boy section and put in a bigger shelf for game magazines.

No other store in the city sold them, and obviously no rental stores had their games. It was pointless to own one at launch because the good games came later (king of fighters, metal slug, etc), and stores already stopped selling them by early 1992.
