A friend of mine had this. It's a Where's Wally(Waldo) ripoff. I think the drawn depictions of Sonic stages are actually pretty cool.

They've been doing it since the 80s. The quality did improve with the arrival of the premium gashapon toys from Yujin. They were 200 yen each. Dark stalkers got 3 different releases, player 2Variants, felicia as a nun etc. These started in 1999 or so.

My girlfriend does competitive puzzling and is into collecting sets from all around the world. I convinced her to get some japanese SMW ones and they are a real marvel to look at. There's also some Super Mario RPG ones from the same makers that we're eyeing
