I got the GameCube on midnight release.I could tell LM sucked even as a 12 year old Nintendo fanboy. It is not good as a game and the only actual example of "it's a tech demo" I can think of. It wasn't scary or funny which is the tone they were going for. I had already had a PS2 for a year so it wasn't that impressive visually either other than some lighting / shadow gimmickry.Thankfully I picked up Rogue Leader with it.

Is Yoshi's Cookie a masterful puzzle game just because it nails its aesthetic?There's almost nothing fun about LM, it's mediocre at best. I still finished it, but never wanted to play it again. It was also only like 4-5 hrs long iirc which was a real bummer when you paid full price and the neighbor kid has the whole town over playing Halo for more than a year. I'm not telling you what to like, but as a game it's one of the worst 1st party Nintendo games I've ever played and I can't imagine someone defending it. I was a huge Nintendo fanboy when it came out (again, midnight release) but I can't in good conscience lie and pretend LM is any better than a 4/10.
