If you want something that eases you more into the genre and is beatable for newbies check out Elemental Master and Thunder Force III.
>>

Gradius III. I refuse to accept any alternative starting point
>>
The first games I really enjoyed were Gleylancer, Sonic Wings Special and Raiden Trad. I still haven't beaten Raiden Trad. Like >>12055631 said, Elemental Master is also really cool and fairly easy. Twinkle Tale is another good, easy one if you prefer cuteshit over spaceshit, but it's not a traditional forced scrolling shmup and is more of a run and gun. It's fun though.
>>
>>12055646

Sonic wings and aerofighters are the same game, just to be clear for OP. And yes very fun shmup with some wackiness thrown in for good measure. Great starting point.

Novice mode for Crimzon Clover or Mushihimesama. Maybe easy mode touhou. Deathsmiles is also pretty easy too and a good way to learn about scoring and extend mechanics in shmups.

Speaking of Touhou, has anyone played the newest danmaku festival? It was pretty fun. I havent really played much touhou since I got more into cave shmups, but i was surprised how easy it felt compared to when I played touhou a long time ago.

Bro, what the hell? It can't get easier than that. Anything I listed can be cleared within 4 hours of attempts or less if you already have experience with the genre. None of this is supposed to sound "impressive". It's just shit to fill your 1cc collection with easy clears.
>>
>>12056109
>It's just shit to fill your 1cc collection with easy clears.
What's the point of that?
>>
>>12056139
OP asked how to get into the genre, so I listed a few entry-level games that aren't frustration inducing to the point you just game over non-stop. Now if you already play shmups for years, nothing stops you from giving those games a try. It's just that they aren't that interesting difficulty wise (not counting second loops or scoring route) if you are already good enough to clear Mushi Maniac/Ultra, DOJWL, Garegga, Ketsui, SDOJ, Batrider Advanced, 2hu Lunatic, Tatsujin Oh...
>>
>>12056160
I'm not asking about what's the point of playing an easier shmup by itself, I meant why trying to "fill a 1cc collection" and especially specifically with easier games.
>>
>>12056162
It's just an old /shmupg/ meme. Some anon used to get really mad at people 1ccing shmups and moving to the next game without exploring the mechanics and scoring aspects. IIRC it was something about this thread
https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=1944
>>
>>12056175
shmupg deserved to die, but I think that anon had a point.
Less because of the scoring and more because trying to 1cc many easy games feels like a chore compared to learning progressively harder games.

Gate of Thunder and Out Zone were specifically made to be starter games for newbies. (Though the latter isn't a full shmup).

Also adding Air Buster to the list. It's simple but really good.

I just realized Yu-Gi-Oh started releasing AFTER every single Parodius game already came out
So Koitsu, Soitsu, Doitsu, and Aitsu are Parodius ORIGINALS, and were then referenced in Yu-Gi-Oh
I just assumed they were a Yu-Gi-Oh reference the whole time, like Twin-Bee and Kid Dracula are to their games
>>
>>12056667
Yu-Gi-Oh wiki says as much

I started by playing DOJ as my first shmup and even though I haven't played other games in the genre yet, it feels like a game I could play for my entire life without running out of things to do.
Find a game with visuals, sound, or a general look/gameplay loop that appeals to you. You won't know shit about what you'll like before you try it. I knew I wanted to have a ton of bullets on the screen, so I went with a bullet hell that looked good to me. If you find whatever you chose boring, play something else.

Rough.
I couldn't tell you which one was my first shmup, because I have played a lot of random arcade games and especially on amiga as a young lad. Might unironically be space invaders if it counts.
>>
I'm kind of vibing with DDP more than with DOJ. I haven't played Donpachi yet but so far DDP is the only game in the series that's really clicking with me from the get go. I'm thinking I'll learn this and revisit the others.

>bomb this secret spot to get a bajillion extra points
Not really a real issue. Magazines and word of mouth were a thing back then and you could watch other players find these spots in the real arcade. Now is it a bad game design? No. The game encourages you to bomb A LOT and it's even good for survival runs, since destroying certain spots cause enemies not to spawn (stage 4 and 6).
>Also half the characters are locked behind the Konami code
I honestly consider it a bad game design for the original arcade release, but it was solved a long time ago with emulation/save state and Zakk's patch and most recently with the 2016 port qol features. Not sure how it works in the Saturn version tho.
>>
>>12059652
What Game ?
>>
What do you think of Game Tengoku CrusinMix Special?
>>
I'm on the third day of my attempt to finish 1942 (Capcom Arcade Version). I made it into the top 20 in the rankings and managed to get halfway through the game.
But it's more of an endurance test. Not only is the game long, but it's also a bit repetitive, and you have to stay focused for an entire hour, doing pretty much the same thing over and over again.
The game isn't bad, I like how the enemies put pressure on you and reduce your space, but holy shit, the game is archaic overall. I don't know if I'll have the willpower to finish it.
>>
>>12059652
You aren't supposed to like "it". It was made for your ancient ancestors.
>>
>>12058828
>OPs been trying to do this all week
do what exactly
>>
>>12059858
It really changed my view of the game. I like to start these blind and then after a while look up what other people are doing in their clears and it changed the way I feel about a run if I don't kill that many birbs and have to wait a bit for the extend.
The ships thing just feels weird aesthetically. To be honest I still like playing wild snail the most.
>>
>>12059096
The Mushi machine at >>12058928 also has 3 different additional fire speed buttons so that you can do super shot. Leaves you playing with a sort of claw grip.

I would like to thanks the anon from the previous thread that told me to try Garegga's Extended Mode. At first I was afraid of trying to go for it, even after finishing countless No Miss runs. Well, today I did my first run and I somehow made it to 2-6 Boss. Man... I can't believe I have the chance to be the first player outside japan to get a Garegga 2-ALL. It can take a whole year, but I'll definitely get it. All thanks to anon's advice.

I'm the only person outside japan actively playing this game. You can easily find my run on youtube, but here's my backup just in case.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IFWKFLKIfu5FlAkbaWEAkSQMptWItFNx/view

FUCK! I'm addicted to this shit. I even dropped my daily gacha habits after starting doing No Miss runs. It feels amazing to be able to consistently clear this game. This game will be 30yo next year and only a few weeks ago I started doing No Miss runs and for some reason nobody outside japan ever did No Miss until now. For a game this popular, you would expect at least one No Miss run from the western shmup community after all these years. Yeah I know, the route to keep the rank low can be a little boring for some people, but that's what makes it so interesting for me. And now I'm on my way to do the same with Extended Mode. This one won't be easy, but it will be more fun than trying to NMNB with the trash ships that don't have piercing shot (silver sword, flying baron, chitta and bornnam).
>>
>>12061105

Yeah, hopefully I didn't abuse my luck in that run. I'm sure I can make it to BH2, but Glow Squid is gonna be a massive wall if I don't stockpile bombs and extra lives. And that's only for his first phase. His second phase can go terribly wrong, because it's entirely RNG based.
