Maybe not my all-time favourite, but Le Goof Troop is definitely a fav out of the lesser-known hacks. Much more creative level design than in vanilla Goof Troop.

The mad guy basically rebuilt the game from ground up, including a banger of a soundtrack at that.And since OP mentioned Contra - Contra Hardcore Hack by Cluster, which sets the game to the highest loop and there are no continues nor extra lives. There's even a variation of this hack that doesn't even let you collect power-ups at all.
