Anyway, best is Sonic 1/CD, the indigo blue just looks more classy.
Sonic 2 looks slicker and the more bold shiny blue feels fresh in a way (but less classy), it was a cool new look back then.
3's sprite... It's weird, he feels inflated and derpy

The S1 color is nice, though in /vr/ tradition the appeal may simply lie in its retroer-is-better and rarity factors. The adjusted blues for S2-3 are more accurate to the original design and artwork after all.

Some anon already mentioned it but the first sprite in >>12056817 comes from Sonic CD, not from S1. For some reason, SCD removed the subtle vertical arc of the movement while S2 pushed it further. For a certain acerbic anti-"bounce" mindset I guess that may be an improvement; personally I think it's a downgrade, as the arc contrasts nicely with the arc-less animation at higher speeds.

Interestingly (???) the Sonic Crackers prototype seems to use the SCD animation as a base (also without "bounce") but the color is adjusted to the S2 blue.

The bounce and added frames would probably trigger posers if that same sprite was posted as a modern "improvement" though.

I like how the final Sonic 2 sprite changed the highlight so that it only appears briefly with the head on a certain angle. It's all in the details.

You're the creator of that gif? That's pretty cool, I've seen it often. Are there any particular differences between the Origins Amy graphics, and between 2013, S2, CD(2011) and S3 prototype Tails?

Aside from how they're aligned for the walking/jogging animations, Tails' sprites are all the identical, though the S3 Prototype has an ever so slightly different palette, somewhere between S2 and S3.
Amy's sprites are almost identical across all four games. Some of her actions have variations depend on the game, but running and jogging are all the same. There's a bug in Origins Plus that gives her a slightly brighter palette in 1 and 2. I don't know if it was ever fixed, but it's not represented in the gifs.
