It's actually a concession for performance (not having to take height (enemies do have height) into account in collision checks simplify calculations a lot). Also some objects do take height into account in collision checks (projectiles).

An enemy's collision box (which prevents you from walking through them) is infinitely high, extending beyond their sprite.
