I only found out about them right at the end, I didn't end up going. We used to play multiplayer on the school computers, stuff like Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem and even Ignition.

I remember we had a computer programming class where the teacher was old and half senile and just putting in a couple more years till his pension- so he was completely checked out.

That entire class was just a Counter Strike/Halo 1 LAN party.

i was at a LAN party last weekend.
it can still be done, but finding people who can be arsed to do it is definitely not as easy as it used to be.
