Outside of Final Fantasy Tactics and FFTA, I don't have much experience with the genre but I love those two. What are your favorite retro tactical role-playing games? Anything under the radar that you really enjoy?
>>12059913>What are your favorite retro tactical role-playing games?Fire Emblem Radiance/Radiant and Ogre Battle 64
Vandal Hearts and Shining Force III are great
The best Tactical ever made
>>12059913I love the Shining Force games for SRPGs. All the mainline series are good, and Shining Force 3 is actually a 3-parter with three different games.I also suggest Shining Force CD which is excellent and a remake of the Shining Force Game Gear titles.
MonstaniaEnergy Breaker
>>12059913Fallout 2 and Jagged Alliance 2
I heard Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together is one of the very best, on the same tier as FFT.
>>12060176I don't know why they made Monstania tactical, shit's more linear than Dragon Quest 1.
I just finished shining force 1 and 2. Pretty decent.
>>12060616Sure thing Ogreshitter
Nobody talk about this. You can have monster and evolve them like pokemon.
i love trpgs but i am generally pretty terrible at them. the only one i've beat was the first langrisser/warsong on the genesis.
>>12060646The post game is completely fucked in the english version from what I remember, no playtesting at all.
Vandal Hearts 2.Unique and fun gameplay.Great story of political intrigue and evil cult.Great characters at least in the side characters part because the main playable cast but MC and Pratau are kinda one dimensional. Funny thing is I only played it for the first time like a year and a half ago but it's already one of my favorite games.Vandal Hearts 1 is very straightforward but I like the better playable characters and the crazy map camera movements.Naturally the Fire Emblem series. Its funny when people complain how the series has changed but they are objectively much better strategy games.I loved the Langrisser games. Naturally the replay value of Der Langrisser and 4 is insane. 5 is a little more straightforward but still great. The Growlanser games are one of my fav series as a whole and I even played them in japanese with the english script TL on GFs.But they are more like RPGs with RTS style movement. Pretty unique.Devil Survivors are the hardest I've played and honestly I beat them due to save states (Plus the OG DeSu annoyingly had a single save)Im not very good at them but I like them a lot.
Play Tactics Ogre for the SNES. Ignore the updated versions because they make the game way too easy.
Pic related is a weird hybrid of tactics/strategy and stat growth, in which your progress is carried over through retries and game overs, which is necessary in order to beat missions once the difficulty increases. Also requires you to 'learn' moves through fighting game inputs and then once they're mastered they can be selected from a menu during combat. They made a sequel that includes first person turn-based shooting too.
Ring of red and ogre battle 64 should be recommended instead of generic slop.
>>12060660Warsong is pretty tough, between the permadeaths, the NPC rescue missions and some beefy bosses. Also the turn length on some of the larger maps that tries your patience. You should give Langrisser 2 a try.
>>12061039Not him but its interesting how different Langrisser 2 is to Der Langrisser.I was expecting just the light path as it was in DL but its so much expanded.Like Sherry shows up immediately in DL but in L2 she shows up a few chapters early as a mysterious knight plus Bernhart gets killed relatively early.Nevermind the graphics which is cuter in L2.

Front Mission 3.The gameplay and graphics are fantastic. All the history/dialogues are tedious.
>>12061057I've only played 1 and 2, so I should give Der a try. The multiple paths sound interesting, but yeah L2 looks super cute.>>12061663>The gameplay and graphics are fantastic. All the history/dialogues are tediousTrue. It's a shame the story is meh when the world building is solid. Wanzer customization is fun and "sparking" advanced skills feels great, even though basic ones like RoFUp1 do the job.>tfw unlocking "FiringSquad"
>>12061927FM3's RNG skill activation is absolutely horrible. Just let me spend some type of resource to activate them, for fuck's sake. The single worst part is that even in the best case scenario, they only activate around half of the time. If it was more that that, then you could rely on them and a failure would just be a bad roll, and if it was less than that, then you wouldn't rely on them and an activation would just be a little bonus. 50% odds are the absolute worst odds to make decisions around because your decision doesn't matter.
>>12061039>Warsong is pretty tough... the NPC rescue missionsI remember when I first played it I had to redo a rescue mission 10 times because the rescue target died before I could even move my troops to be in range of the enemies killing him. Just completely random whether I won or lost. After that it was actually pretty easy because you can over-level a couple commanders and win.
>>12060616>>12060632>TriviaYasumi Matsuno was the creator of Ogre Battle and FFT series. He worked for Enix and made Ogre Battle series. Then he left to join SquareSoft to make FFT series and Vagrant Story.
>>12059928Looks fantastic, suggest more. I thought I played all, valkyrie, hoshi, vanguard aso.
>>12059982Why
>>12059913Shining Force
>>12059913try shining force 1 and 2its like if fire emblem wasnt so focused on wasting your fucking time
>>12059913I like Da Grinding Game 2.1 is also good but 2 makes some worthwhile mechanical improvements.
>>12060616It is.
>>12064110It has way weaker cast (only Adell and Rozalin are good plus returning D1 chars) and story (the twists near the end about Adell being a demon since birth, which is why he wasn't affected by curse and the summoning spell working as intended because Rozalin IS Zenon are very good, but it's Adell and Rozalin again while rest get nothing and overall story is nowhere near as interesting as 1's), but man does it drastically improve in optional content. Item World is only fun for a little while until you actually go into postgame GRIND after which you absolutely dread it, and in D1 the only other optional content was>Prinny Land (Lv.40-80; 4 maps)>Cave of Ordeal (Lv.100-1000; 5 maps + a bunch of 1-time fights)>Priere (Lv.1000-2000; like 3 maps or something)>Beauty Castle (Lv.2000-2500; like 2 maps)>Baal (Lv.4000+; 2 maps)Meanwhile D2 dumps a fucking Dark World on you that breaks your brain just with unlock requirements and then you're also spending many hours in Item World gathering maps for Land of Carnage. And you get it on top of usual stuff like Cave of Ordeals and Baal, so that is way above what D1 had for optional content.
>>12064183D2 would be perfect if Axel was the main character, the only interesting and fun fella in the whole thing.
