What are some obscure entries in otherwise popular /vr/ series? My choice would be DK: King of Swing. I've never even seen this game discussed anywhere online before, and it's a bitch to search for because the words "Donkey Kong" aren't even in its title. It was an amusing novelty at the time, but it's honestly pretty bland and not worth revisiting.
Anything Nintendo published that didn't release originally in japan.
Pretty sure this is the most obscure Mario-related game. People even talk about SMB Special every now and then, but not this one.
>>12060345I'd say Advance Wars is an exception. It seems unfair to put it on the same level as Kid Icarus 2.
>>12060332
>>12060378How is this? I'm a fan of the N64 Bomberman, but not so much the original style of games. And I am a Wario slut.
>>12060404It's just a Bomberman game with Wario as a playable character. You're better off with Bomberman Quest if you're looking for a more in-depth adventure game.
>>12060364nintendo fans be like>same game? I'll take two!!
>>12060332King of Swing is on no-one's radar but I enjoyed it. There is also a sequel on the DS called Jungle Climber which has a lot more content and cranks up the difficulty a few notches. Both of them are inspired by a game called Clu Clu Land on the NES.
>>12060515>>12060515>King of Swing is on no-one's radarNot anymore, better buy a copy now. Next week YouTube is going to pump fun this bitch.
The GBA had all sorts of bizarre spinoff games. The sixth gen as a whole was a weird time for Nintendo IPs.
>>12060404basically what >>12060406 said. nothing special but it's a somewhat obscure game which is what OP asked for
>>12060364How are you even supposed to quantify it? That was a Satellaview download with a tournament attached to it so I can imagine it got some attention.Mario Family is wild, though granted not a game. If you are a really big Mario fan, you'd have to buy a specific sewing machine. A deluxe package would include a GB pocket (despite all software being GBC?). The machine itself released overseas with a translated OS cartridge. Apparently it was well received, but I'm not going to pretend I have any clue about historical reception of digital sewing machines. You'd then have to buy your 32 pattern (of which 2 are dupes) mario cartridge. A kirby one was to release shortly after but immediately cancelled after the release of the Mario cartridge so this is probably. Turns out Edge of Emulation got it emulated and he also mentions SegaSonic Popcorn Shop, an arcade mini-game popcorn maker.
>>12060554The handheld was the easiest place to experiment on at the time. It was propping the company up and making so much money they started doing gimmick games like this and all sorts of experimentation as seen in this thread. I’m assuming it was low risk high reward type deal like making a horror movie, don’t need the triple a budget. I’m wondering if a lot of these games were even developed by more than 10-15 people, and I haven’t looked at who made this game specifically and it would be interesting to know their thought process and what they went on to do or had already done might explain some of the choices on using IPs in weird ways. Just my two cents
>>12060554I actually owned this. It's really bad.
Dude, you know Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon, right? Those two hip new mascots on the Playstation? All the kids want them to cross over, right? Well, what if we did that, but we made it:>a minigame collection>for the GBA>split into two games>and the only time you play as either character is in a glorified menu>where you're locked to a 2D sidescrollerPretty fucking radical, am I right? Let's print it.
>>12060332Another good candidate is Yoshi's Safari.
>>12061752I swear Nintendo power lied about this at one point and said the crash game would play like the isometric gba spyros and spyro would be a side scroller.
The REAL Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2An even more obscure pick would be Tony Hawk's Motion on the DS but that's NOT RETRO
>>12060332Obscure arcade dating sim made by Capcom, which was released alongside their otherwise mainstream and popular arcade titles.
>>12062268>arcade dating simholy cringe. did you just stand there and play these? or did they provide a booth or at least a curtain
>>12062268>>12062280It was a quiz game like Quiz&Dragons.
>>12062280Characters from it have appeared in the Vs series (Marvel vs Capcom etc).
>>12062280There's a whole genre of porn arcade games. No one cares about a wholesome dating sim.
>>12062280There's a Tokimeki Memorial arcade game that has a heartbeat sensor built into it. People would workout in front of the cabinet to get their heartbeat up so they could woo their waifus.
>>12060404If you dislike classic Bomberman, Wario Blast might actually be for you. Wario basically invades Bombermans game to destroy him.
>>12060963the game asks whether you're playing on an original gba or an sp/ds
>>12062268I'll take one orange girl on the right, please
>>12062268I played the PS1 port a few years ago.>main girl is a Shiori Fujisaki type who does modeling and is being abused by her manager>green haired girl is a sports tomboy and not much else>Saki is a super-heroine but you barely see her, to get her you need to meet her annoying sidekick who looks straight out of a Go Nagai manga>blonde girl is an ojousama with an overly protective robot butler. They do some bdsm shit to you on her route>pink haired lady is their bubbly teacher, redhaired lady is a journo who teases you>the purple haired girl is an yandere ghost
>>12061752>>12060332Those sucked so they deserve to be forgotten. Unfortunately picrel is an actual good game that shares the same fate.
>>12062290that is my wife.
>>12060332Rayman has a million of these. They milked the first two games like crazy with spinoffs.
To this day everything thinks F-Zero GX was the last F-Zero game.
>>12061752I remember seeing the commercials on TV and thought it was a dream come true.Thankfully I never actually played them as a kid, I emulated them out of curiosity much later.
>>12062408>this shit exists>no EFZ cabinets for me to play as my VN waifu and kick people's asses
>>12060332That popped up recently for me as well while I was perusing some ROM sites. Was a big "oh shit so THAT'S where they're from" moment, as I've seen DK's sprites for this reused in more than a few places. Also yeah, I thought it was a novel little game when actually trying it, but it's not a "you gotta go back and try this one" kind of game. It also made me fully realize that, aside from ports, the GBA really lacked a lot of "traditional" Nintendo games. You got Zelda, Metroid, and Mario Kart, but just about everything else got gimmick spin-offs or RPGs and such. I think it says a lot that the traditional Nintendo platformer for the GBA was Wario Land 4, not any form of Super Mario or what have you. >>12061165I think a big part of it is also that the GBA came out at just the right time for the amount of power that it had. It was a huge leap forward for handhelds and in a powerful position as the only real contender for the 6th Gen, but it still wasn't strong enough to do anything huge, so there was enough focus on it and incentive to make a game, the capability to do a lot with it, but still enough limitation that you had to get creative with what you were making, so you ended up with one platform where everyone was just making anything they could for it. Resulted in a lot of ambitious ports and a lot of weird titles. It was super cool seeing what people were doing with it as they learned, like the utter refinements of Aria of Sorrow and Spyro: Season of Flame over the much more rudimentary Harmony of Dissonance and Spyro: Season of Ice.
