Was it really considered better than stuff like Metal Slug & Doom?
poor excuse for a thread
The first-person shooter?
After two playthroughs, one with Fixed Shot and one with Free Shot, I can pretty confidently say "I don't like it"Something about it just doesn't click at all. Flat levels, unexciting bosses and set-pieces, an awful shmup stage, very little enemy variety. But the worst crime of all is just a distinct lack of OOMPH that something like Metal Slug has in absolute spades. I dunno, it was a let-down. Alien Solider feels like a much greater execution of all of Gunstar's ideas.
The boss fights are definitely better than Metal Slug and Doom. Makes sense as they're Treasure's specialty. Each boss in the boss rush at the end is so much more mobile with multiple things they can do. Metal Slug bosses are always a borderline stationary object you spam bombs at.
Fuck the dice palaceGreat game tough the best Treasure on Megadrive
Gunstar mostly suffers from a lack of focus, you can tell it was designed like a hodgepodge of whatever random ideas the developers could think of. There are some great ideas there, but not a lot of them are done justice. In particular, I thought the lightsaber weapon was really interesting and I wish the game would've been designed more around it. I also feel like the weapon combos generally detract from the game more than they add, since most of them aren't very interesting, nor well-balanced. The RNG weapon drops compound the problem even more, since some weapons are really good while others are really bad, and whichever one you get depends on random chance. It's a decent game but not one of Treasure's best by a long shot. Alien Soldier and Dynamite Headdy are both better.
Great game, not as good as Metal Slug or Doom. The GBA sequel is pretty great too. Both worthy of playing through as they are pretty quick to defeat.
I'll be honest, I've never heard those three games compared. Doom was first person, Gunstar and Metal Slug were side scrollers. And Metal Slug was something you'd play at a pizza hut, you kinda just enjoyed the animations and backgrounds until your parents stopped giving you quarters. Gunstar was on a console so you could keep putting in the hours to master it.All very different experiences, they weren't just gun games.
>>12061481>i have no opinion but want to complainyou're included now
nice shota on the cover
>>12061475Better than both of them because of higher frame rate.
>>12061475It's definitely not better than Metal Slug. Casuals probably like it more since you can mindlessly run through with zero effort.
>is a side scroller better than a first person shooter2025 /vr/ is fucking braindead.
>>12061475Yes, but not better than Tetris or Sega Rally
>>12061491I agree. Gunstar had some cool ideas and fx tricks, but I never really enjoyed it compared to things like Super C, Hardcorps or Metal Slug 3.
>>12061475Doom by itself is already better. Doom plus the one million mods it has blows it away completely.
>>12064498>Metal Slug 3why? it's the worst one of the trilogy
JUST
>>12064512Different kind of games, Doom was more impressive at the time but for example in boss department, Gunstar wins by a longshot.
I don't know why you included Doom in the discussion instead of Contra, but compared to metal slug gunstar is very weak when it comes to weapons and level design and very strong when it comes to the level variety and boss design.
>>12061475No. The game was SEGA's answer to Contra specifically.Metal Slug also came out several years after it so of course it's better.
