Would it have been the biggest thing to happen in 2001?
>>
it'd be an another one walking fire FPS among the dozens released in 1998-2004
>>
>>12061810
There was still lingering good will for the Duke brand in 2001, and things like battlefield and half life 2 hand't changed the industry yet. With a good map editor given away with it, duke 2001 would have had a decent following if it wasn't shit.

Halo landed in 2001, so it would have needed very polished game play to compete. Unreal tournament would have given it stiff competition in multiplayer as well since UT had decent custom maps.Duke 3D's multiplayer thrived on custom maps, like "blockwar" where vertical apartment buildings with elevators and jetpacks and pipe bomb traps and security cameras were put to good use. If they could re-create that in 2001, it would have done well.

Big things in 2001? Reminds me of that tragedy with the vehicular crash that happened. Lost one of the men of all-time then.
>>
>>12061879
Yeah, tragic, rip dale
>>
If it was a Deus Ex style game with Duke 3D's sense of humor, it might've been something special.
>>
Would have been remembered as a nice early 2000s FPS until Half Life 2 hype kicks in.

HL2 didn’t have enough guns

funny how hl2 gets ragged on for this but not halo ce or fear, its almost like you're retarded
>>
>>12061984
halo ce had much better guns, half-life 2 didn't have any that felt good to use and I think this is a huge problem with hl2 that the first didn't suffer from. The focus on gimmick weapons/tools ends up creating a stilted sense of armament progression and the easy encounters from beginning to end make the experience underwhelming.

Halo has the great AI and enemy behaviors, grenade types/one button nades, good integration of melee and you're constantly pressed to change up your loadout before, during and after firefights.

>>12061990
covenant weapons weren't nearly as fun to use as marine weapons, just practical given encounters and ammo depletion. You're just another asshurt fat who didn't get hl1 part 2 and cries themselves to sleep over not having cock roaches to throw at radioactive komodo dragons. cry more you fucking retard, hl2s weapons are tight and very fun to use. and of course you being as retarded as you are bend over backwards struggling to see how the gravity gun is a nice swiss army knife in an unexpected encounters. and im willing to bet you still are flummoxed on how to use the smg later in the game and bitch about that too.

>the ai!
oh and look, more asshurt cope over AI which wasn't anything to do with what you originally bitched about. boy isn't that a stupid look.

yeah you've proved yourself to be same fat who wanted hl1 part 2 area 51 edition, shut up you stupid ugly faggot.

Not the biggest but it sure could've made a big splash in the industry.

>the seething
don't care about your hurt feelings about this, just interested in the games.
>hl2s weapons are tight and very fun to use
Not at all. It felt dated and the conflict between prioritizing gimmicks like the gravity gun, turret defense sequences and bug bait over traditional firearms, cutting back the offensive weaponry in favor of gimmick tools was also a means of achieving this.
>the ai!
Yes the AI, the combat encounters in HL2 are never as good as Halo 1, let alone Halo 2 due to the simple AI, unsatisfying weapons and the infrequency of mixed encounters.

It's literally just 1 (one) autist who keeps saying this and making threads about it, it's not a problem for anyone else
>>
>>12061931
that was postal 2. has alot of odd similarities with dnf actually

The DNF 2001 trailer was good enough that it kept peoples hopes up until the end of the decade, and kept people interested enough that they remade the trailer in 4k from the leaked source files 20 years later.

If it came out between 2001-2003 and only gave us what the trailer promised, it would've been anything between a hit and an above average game, depending on when it comes out (it would've been mind blowing in 2001, but a bit aged by 2003). It had insane amount of detail though, like the ability to have bullets drill holes into wood.

>>12062064
this shit looks great even today, in 2001 it would've made people piss their pants.

Obvious ESL faggot, get out.

The reason that Duke Nukem Forever had the hype it did, was because of just how ground-breaking a lot of it was. Interactive GUI menus in-game? Real-time destructible environments? High quality facial animation with rigging? A world with 1-to-1 scale?

This shit was unheard of back in the day, or at least only contained to one game per facet. All of them combined into one made it seem like DNF was going to be the biggest FPS ever made, bigger than Halo, Half-Life, and even Doom. That's why people waited over a fucking decade for it to be released.

Then the retard, Broussard, decided that they needed to switch engines to stay on top, broke their game, and the constant iterative cycle of breaking the game and spending months fixing it just continued to stack on top of one another. It's amazing that it even released at all, honestly.

Hopefully the DNF Restoration project, or one of those projects, can realize even 1/10th of the potential the game had before it got buck broken. It's one of gaming's infamous "What-if's".

>>12062264
i really don't give a shit about all of the tech gimmicks put in service of a game that would have played no different from SiN or SoF or NOLF or RtCW or
>>
>>12062308
Wow, the only games even remotely similar to the ones you mentioned were SiN and RtCW.
>>
DNF would have done great pre-2003 (pre Max Payne, Far Cry, etc).

People were still hyped and 3D Relams would have had plenty of time to prepare the game for launch.

As a kid back then I didnt even know duke was a fading brand Until the mid 2000s. When i hadnt seen one in q while. Didn't know how branding and lisence stuff worked and thought all the ps1 games and n64 games were great. Had time to kill and total meltdown. I guess they put all their eggs in that one basket. I feel if they did something on the capacity of level size like ion fury and made all new map sets and some new enemies and just made another build game in duke32. It could be really great. I dont see why they can't. Id pay for that. I guess itd have to be some kind of duke re release but like I said if they just made it duke 3d two with 4 or 5 new episodes people would pay for that and it could bring the brand back. A new 3rd person shooter game. Could work less story more action. Id play it. If a new 3rd person duke game came out id play that
