Great game, but it’s just a little overrated
It's correctly rated
>>12062339its not overrated if you understand why it became so popular, which is actually lost knowledge unfortunately.
>forces you to buy the game twice for full completionhow did they get away with this?
hey what if we create like 50 threads that's just a picture of a game cover and a comment like "good game"?oh wait, op already did that
>>12062387Turn your monitor on
>>12062339>overrated>sequel + first game as late-game expansion>overratedNot overrated.
Why don’t you retardants do this on vp?
This was an awesome sequel. Every pokemon game after this feels like a reboot for the next batch of kids to play for the first time. You don't wonder where features from the first game went. You get a whole new map and the old one too. Just a really cozy game.
>>12062339great game apart from the main combat gameplay which is basically just spamming the a button unless you purposefully limit yourselfshame because the battle system itself is pretty good and the pokemon sprites are some of the most soulful sprites ever madeif only the ai was a little harder and they had more competetive teams so you actually had to try at points
>>12062339>overratedwhenever this game gets brought up, nine times out of ten it's someone shitting on it for being "overrated"and that other one time is quickly derailed by people crawling out of the woodwork to call it overrated anywayyou could not have downloaded a safer opinion if you tried
>>12062339The only thing wrong about these games was the level curve, you’ll steamroll everything by late game even if you’re a turbo retard.Other than that, this was packed with content for a fucking GBC game. I’m amazed they fit so much in it.
Great game, but it's just a little underated
>>12062574you steamroll the early game too unless you spread your exp thin across multiple mons
>>12062339>Reuses too many Gen1 mons making it boring for non newcomers >Has twice as much useless HM fuckery as the original game >Pokemon type distribution is garbage so very few good teams can be made>Day/Night system only ads tedium >New interesting dark types are all endgame when you'll already have your final team >Very few of the new Pokemon are useful anyway >Lots of plushiemon nobody cares about >More single evolution shitheads>Awkward levelling curve and evolution stones locked in optional mini games, you're likely to finish the game with unevolved Pokemon Eh, it's the worst by far of the retro gens and I say this as someone who refused to give Gen 3 a try until I was 32, but it's better Sneasel and Umbreon are cool even if they're shitmon though
>>12062492It's the pendulum swinging. What was once considered a masterpiece has been looked at with eyes from an outside perspective. Meaning, it's flaws are picked out to dry without pretentions holding their experience back. For some reason I skipped gsc and came back to pokemon in college with rse and dp. When I did play gsc I was not impressed, still fun, but the hype for it did not matched by my experience. I like gen 3 better.
>>12062623also >friendship evolutions are fucking terrible>held item trade evolutions>hiding all the cool mons as very low rate encounters in obscure spots so you barely see a fraction of wild mons unless you specifically look>egg grinding for all the baby mons is a tedious drag>catching the roaming dogs is a shit experience (i did it legit recently apart from using my master ball on one of them)>requiring pokemon from at least 2 other games to complete>no better place to grind than e4 which is quite low level really
>>12062339It's got that shinto magic inside a boxIts like stuffing your head inside a magical little flat worldIt was one of the earlier games that I played but actually having to play the game at certain times to catch certain pokemon and even having the world get dark was very immersive to me. If you play it after 2007 then sure, all its tricks seem old hat. You have to appreciate it for its beautiful music and sprite work and massive world size
>>12062623>>Reuses too many Gen1 mons making it boring for non newcomersNah this was kino when it released. Its only zoomer come lately that gets upset about this, mostly gen 5 babs using it to distract from how fucking unpopular the gen 5 philosophy was.
\>>12062623>Day/Night systemkino>>12062623>finish the game with unevolved Pokemonkino>>12062634>hiding all the cool mons as very low rate encounters in obscure spotskino
>>12062623>>12062634All this just sounds like whining to me, I'll be honest. It's a good retro game.
>>12062647i like it and it has so much soul im just saying its quite flawed which is a shame since its so close to true greatness
>>12062413That board is for fandomism retardation. It's a retro game so this board is fine
>>12062626This argument never held water. The people who played the game when it came out did so without nostalgia. If it wasn't good, they'd have had no problem being critical of it.Meanwhile, the people playing it later are doing so under the lens of 30 years worth of industry optimizations and hindsight. And that's assuming they're going in completely blind and haven't had their perceptions colored beforehand, which is nearly impossible for a franchise like Pokemon.
>>12062623>Reuses too many Gen1 mons making it boring for non newcomersThat was based. It was a nice mix of old friends and new discoveries>Has twice as much useless HM fuckery as the original game Waterfall was good, Whirlpool sucked. Was still very manageable, unlike Gen 3>Pokemon type distribution is garbage so very few good teams can be madeDark is hard to find (less so in Crystal), everything else is fine>Day/Night system only ads tedium lmao imagine hating the Day/Night system, fucking zoomers.>New interesting dark types are all endgame when you'll already have your final team See above>Very few of the new Pokemon are useful anyway lmao>Lots of plushiemon nobody cares about Babies were kino.>More single evolution shitheadsA health balance of no evolution, single evolution and double evolution is important>Awkward levelling curve and evolution stones locked in optional mini games, you're likely to finish the game with unevolved Pokemon lol, beating the E4/Champ isn't the end of the game, and only stone based evolutions wouldn't be evolved by then (assuming you're playing GS and not Crystal). Plus you could always trade back to RB and use a stone to evolve before returning the mon to GS. It was normal to either have a trade cable or know someone that had it. This is the problem with parroting a youtube that only understands the game through ROMs and not experiencing it first hand. I suppose we're on a retrograde stone carving forum so a lot of people won't get that.
The level curve is ass and because it's early Pokemon so are the learnsets. The new mons aren't mixed in as well with the old ones as they could be, but that wasn't as big of an issue at the time since the original 151 WERE Pokemon to everyone back then. This game was a fucking miracle when it came out, beyond incredible to play brand new. Pretty much the perfect sequel to the original games that everyone loved, as >>12062418 states every game after this has some form of regression and feels intended for brand new players more than old ones. Ruby and Sapphire were an enormous disappointment to play after how much Gold and Silver built upon Red and Blue, Diamond and Pearl were thankfully better but still felt like they weren't as big a leap as they could have been. Gold and Silver felt very much like they were intended to cap off the series as a whole (I'm pretty sure that WAS the idea originally) and they never reached that level of ambition ever again.
>>12062634Anyone who unironically uses the term “mons” can have their views safely disregarded. Hyper-autistic nitpicking always follows.
>>12062339The real problem with these games is that for some people they loom large enough in people's minds that they become this monolithic institution rather than a series of pretty cool handheld JRPGs. Like I get it, the games are really charming, and the central conceit of the series is incredibly engaging, but people forget that the pokemon themselves are simply in service to the design space of the JRPG beneath it. People dont get this worked up over enemy design in SMT jesus fuck, obsessives suck the fun out of things like this
>>12062780>rather than a series of pretty cool handheld JRPGs.Pokemon is so much more than the games though. The games are a fraction of the sales compare to the merch.
>>12062780>the problem with this is the people who like itSo you don't have an opinion, but wanted to say something anyway.
Why can’t you have a discussion about these games on vp without it divulging to complete shit ?
>>12062780You weren't there. man.
The game is overrated because the games supplemented the Pokémania experience, where the manchild millennials that grew up with it also watched the anime at home and also traded the cards at school.Even today we have manchild millennials willing to commit crimes over rare Pokémon trading cards and loose Pokémon carts being sold for 5x their original retail price back in the day.
>>12063187-wigger
Not @ all
>>12063135Do you know the function of a containment board? Who gives a shit what they tlk about on vp as long as they stay over there.
>>12063135cant even discuss them on /vr/. I mean you cant really discuss anything here.
>>12064471Maybe if you had uppyvoties to help guide you :(
>>12062339Very overrated games that aged like milk. Kids that cared about filling the Pokedex liked it, those that liked battling got bored fast. The Pokemania fad was ending around its release so it wasn't even a good product of its time.
Nah
>>12062412That's not what overrated means.
>>12062642You mean gen 3, that's where older pokemon got shoved to the backseat with very few exceptions. Most people who complain about Johto wish it was more like RSE anyway.
>>12062339Only Zoomers who weren't there hate this game. There are fun parts to it and Kanto was icing on the cake.Legendary dogs and Unknown pokemon were cool too.So yeah fuck you
>>12062659>The people who played the game when it came out did so without nostalgia. If it wasn't good, they'd have had no problem being critical of it.Do you honestly think kids in the 90s would have critical standards for a babies first RPG?
>>12063187Seethe more Zoomer faggot. Literally a million ways to play it including a flash cart on real hardware if you're so inclined or just emulate since who the fuck cares.t. Millennial that knows better
>>12063187No lies detected. GSC aren't great games but that's not the main issue. Pokemon's aggressive manchildren and scalping niggers today are a product of never maturing after 1999.
>>12062339>a little
>>12062339 Mother 3 thread?
>>12062339It isBut when you're 8 you don't notice
