DQ8 running on Sega Dreamcast

Dreamcast homebrew scene is thriving.
>>
What's the point? It's just a worse looking version of the game.
>>
And just like that, the Dreamcast was saved
>>
>>12062498
>approximately on par with GC and PS2
I'll believe it when San Andreas is running on Dreamcast.

Dreamcast has a better library than the Lame Cube
>>
>>12062547
Wow. Look at all those shitty games
>>
>>12062498
Thanks for the news OP.
Dont mind the mentally ill posts.
>>
>>12062534
god i wish someone would make an indie game for the dc that isn't slop
>>
>>12062560
Only because SEGA withdrew from console hardware.
>>
>>12062564
Anyone who's good at making video games won't do homebrew on a dead console because that eradicates your potential playerbase, so you're left with schizos and wannabes
>>
>>12062547
So the only good game is a port?
>>
>>12062560
>sloppy seconds
>>
What's with the seething? It's just a cool thing for the old DC
>>
pathetic posters here god damn
>>
>>12062589
Because its not a port to the Nintendo Switch 2 (in stores now for only $79.99!)
>>
>>12062589
First day on 4chan? Basically most people here are miserable and spend their time trying to make others feel miserable too
>>
>>12062505
I like seeing tangible proof that the dreamcast could have had a regular console generation somewhat keeping up with the others if sega didn't run out of money
>>
>gd-roms 1gb (lets be real though you have to use CDroms so 700mb)

>ps2 dvds 8.4gb

Dont see a lot of games being ported

I like that things are developed for DC but not much seems to come out. Doom 64 was good.
>>
>>12062498
At first with the whole gta3 gimmick I was under the impression the Dreamcast could actually compete, but as given enough time with the tech, people figure out ways to make it happen. Now I wanna see Morrowind on Dreamcast.
>>
This would be wild, I'd be surprised if it became a finished project though. Just like SM64 and Tomb Raider on the GBA.
>>
>>12062775
morrowind is fucked up, it barely ran on the xbox
>>
>>12062775
I want to play morrowind on dreamcast...
>>
>social media picture in the OP
>when the person posting about the thing on social media has nothing to do with the thing being posted

This should be b& on sight
>>
>>12062498
That's neat and all, but at this point the DC homebrew scene is turning into the Colecovision's, but with more concessions in the ports.
>>
>>12062728
DQVIII was not exactly a tech demo to begin with and that screenshot looks completely fucked.
>the Dreamcast can display 3D models
Wow holy shit who knew

Also lmao what a fag
>>
>>12063115
He sounds just like our own local spammer. SEGA people are the most thin skinned
>>
>>12062573
LOL, how? It makes it easier than ever for people to play it since they can just emulate.
>>

Based schizo

>>12062728
you think SE was going to spend time and resources on a console getting 3-way fucked? DQ8 was exclusive because it was the only system Japan cared about atm
>>
I know these are supposed to be tech/programming wizardry showpieces basically, but I essentially feel about them as I feel about any other ports and shitmasters: extremely unexciting.
>>
>>12063512
i would imagine it feels very satisfying to get these things working, but i agree. cant say im interested. i do find it neat though.
>>
>>12062737
Can you be any more disingenuous? How many games actually use the dual layer disc you faggot
>>
>>12064174
You realize half of 8.4 is still 4.2 right

lmao
>>
>>12062737
GD-Roms are 1.2gb, the same as a gcn disc.
The Vast majority of the ps2 library are actually on cd-roms. only a select few use dvds, you can tell by looking at the bottom of the disc.
>>
>>12064549
From what I can see, only 10% of the library was on CD-rom

How is that the vast majority my nigga
>>
>>12064552
I guess you cant understand per capita
>>
>>12064559
How bout I bust a capita in yo ass, lyin ass NIGGA
>>
>>12064549
You're half-remembering something incorrectly, you dipshit. The vast majority of the PS2's library was on single-layer DVDs. Only a select few use dual-layer DVDs, like the first Xenosaga and MGS2: Substance. Then there's a small portion that uses CDs, which are mostly early games, 2D titles and budget releases.
>>
>>12064549
>the same as a gcn disc
GameCube discs have a slightly higher capacity actually, at 1.46 GB
>The Vast majority of the ps2 library are actually on cd-roms. only a select few use dvds
According to Redump, approximately 27% of all PS2 releases are on CD, so not the "vast majority"
>>
>>12064656
And filtering out shit like demos, re-releases, etc, it's only about 24%
>>
>>12062534
you're in the wrong hobby if shit like this isnt just intrinsically cool to you
>>
>>12064626
For every single dvd that sony sold with a game on it there was around 200 recycled ps1 CD-roms printed with a demo/movie clips on it.
>>
>>12064656
I knew gcn was a little bigger i just didnt feel like looking it up. Just one of those demo dics would have had prints in the millions, more than most games ever dream to sell.
>>
>>12062505
A benchmark. It's basically a demonstration of how far the Dreamcast can be pushed after 25 years of people discovering ways to optimize games that run on it.

Same deal as the N64 port of Portal. You've got to port something that exists for the sake of comparison.
>>
>>12062861
Hence the challenge, but Dreamcast has windows compat, so possibly just as slow as Xbox heug
>>
>>12064690
>For every single dvd that sony sold with a game on it there was around 200 recycled ps1 CD-roms printed with a demo/movie clips on it.
Redump has cataloged practically all PS2 media and even if you include demos, action replay, etc. CDs are only 27%:
http://redump.org/discs/system/ps2/media/cd
http://redump.org/discs/system/ps2/
3146 / 11700 = 26.89%
>>
>>12064709
im sure that redump tracks how many of each disc was burned.
>>
>>12064727
I'm sure some Anon on 4chan (you) without factual proof tracks it down better than Redump.
>>
>>12064730
I don't even know how to respond because you know damn well there were tens of millions of demos printed on cds every year and they are probably what helped sony sell more systems because they make the disc drives fail.
>>
>>12064549
So little of the PS2 library is on CDs that it's not even widely known that a lot of the tray drives have problems spinning them properly.
>>
>>12064690
>>12064778
You know damn well they weren't putting PS1 games on PS2 CD's. The PS2 can only play PS1 games in PS1 mode (ie using the PS1 CPU), but your PS2 demo discs are PS2 binaries. Popstarter exists in the first place because of this.
>>
>>12064778
Great we'll port all those demo disks to Dreamcast because uh?
>>
>>12064826
I never mentioned ps1, I only said that many ps2 demo discs loved to use cd format because they were cheap enough to give away at the time. I also said that the number of demo discs that were printed outnumber all licensed games sold combined tho i have no source on this besides being there then.
>>
>>12062505
There's something cool in the power of autism to spend huge effort on stuff which almost no one else in the whole world will ever play expect the margin of a margin of a margin of the specific dev scene. I have a cognitive dissonance because I hold both of these thoughts genuinely in my head where it's both totally pointless but it's extremely cool at the same time.

Of course you can never for 100% say something is pointless because someone looking back at something from 25 years or more ago might come up with modern tech solutions and shit which might have some use.
>>
>>12062775
The trick is though that the way the DC is managing these ports is due to dedicated autists doing a far FAR better job than rockstar et al at optimisation. It's correct to say then than the DC *could* have managed to run $SPECIFIC_GAME as it was released with enough effort, but you see, with that same amount of effort applied to the PS2 version it would have achieved even greater heights putting it out of the reach of the DC.
It's a quirk of how shitty many big budget, big name games really are that there's so much headroom for improvement that you can bring it down to a (mostly) lesser console.
>>
>>12064854
I doubt the numbers work out in favor of CDs.
If you're talking unique discs where you count each only once you're talking at most 5 magazines in any major region releasing a new disc every month. 60 a year for a single country is insignificant compared to the shovel loads of PS2 DVDs being made by porting slop houses in the same 2-bit country for release worldwide.
If you mean total numbers of discs, again you're comparing dwindling sales of physical magazines in the 2000s to multi-million selling triple platinum releases of which the PS2 had more than the lion's share.
>>
>>12062498
Awesome. Terrific. Groovy.

Now how many still own a Dreamcast (or ever owned one)?
>>
>>12062527
well... GTA3 is fully playable now, so thats a step.
>>
>>12065976
Yeah this is a good point and a good benchmark imo.

I am not even into Dreamcast but think this is kind of neat that people harness their autism to bring joy to others.

Neat game though. I got filtered on the 3DS version since it was mega long and my patience for these kind of RPGs gets thinner as I get older. A lot of them are long for the sake of being long.
>>
>>12062505
Sega fans are crazy like that
>>
>>12062871
That is actually impossible. It was barely able to run on the xbox.
>>
>>12062545
sure but thats why its cool
>>
>>12064174
if my recent ps2 download spree was anything to go by: 0

most games are only a gig or two as isos, even the multi disc games are only 1-3GB per disc. disc space really wouldnt be an issue for like 30-40% of the ps2 library
>>
>>12062498
>Dreamcast doesn't have role playing ga-
Looks like someone needs to apologize
>>
>>12062505
Why do people climb mountains? Because it's there. Sometimes people look at a challenge and say "Yeah I'm gonna do it" either to prove a point or just for the sake of doing it.
