Yes
it's breddy good.
If levels scaled with NG+ it would be the best ever
>>12062841idk about short and grindy, but I agree it is norm friendly
One of my all time favs, I got it for Xmas new as a kid. It was huge at the time. I play it like once a year it seems.
lufia 2
op here I posted the wrong pic
>>12062829Chrono Trigger is up there at the hall of GOTYs
>>12063653No. Its in my ass.
>best jrpg ever?>posts a SNES gameFound the non-player.
I feel like it isn't but I can't name anything I like better except maybe xenogears and it's way too long in English without the text speed patch.
>>12063651This games too childish>>12063914>xenogearsBlatant troll post
>>12063960>This games too childishyou never played it for more than 10 minutes
>>12063883- How can you be a non-player of a SNES title.- Chances are they are over 30- Chances are they actually played video games before we was mainstream and on every celphone played by moms and teenage girls
>>12063967SNES drones are constantly singing the praises of games they've never played.Anybody who's played a decent number of JRPG's knows the best JRPG games are not found on SNES. The only people propping up Crono either haven't played it, or haven't played anything else and thus have no comparison.
>>12062829The greatest JRPG ever made is Star Ocean the Second Story.>>12063976NTA: I fully believe JRPG's peaked with the PSX, but I can understand why people would prefer the 2D sprite art and soundchip on the SNES vs the admittedly clunky transition to Gen 5
>>12063651a little long but yeah pretty good
>>12062829Most overrated jrpg is more like it.>>12063976>>12064017Agreed, PSX was the JRPG golden age.
>>12063976>The only people propping up Crono either haven't played it, or haven't played anything else and thus have no comparison. That's me, I haven't played anything else and still know that CT is the best JRPG ever. I'm not interesting in playing other JRPGs because they are inferior

It's great, but no.
Onions faggots thread. Disgusting.
>>12062842>If levels scaled with NG+ it would be the best everLol this is like the one game where that would be completely counterproductive.

>>12062829it doesn't waste your time like other jrpg's, so there's a plus
>>12062829It's good but it does have its flaws. Like most Square games, the special abilities outside of the ultimates are mostly worthless and the majority of the game is just spamming attack unless a boss has a specific magic weakness. Moving enemies that change position in battle which actually affects how you can hit them with tech is an extraordinarily interesting idea that may as well not exist because they never do anything interesting with it.The time travel aspect feels incredibly undeveloped. Only a few things can be changed by going back to the past. It feels like 70% of the game takes place in 600ad. There's nothing to explore until you get the epoch at the very very last tenth of the game. Prehistoric feels totally empty, same with Ice Age. Only the future and 600ad and some of 1000ad have things to explore and even then there's not a lot. Only the Chrono Trigger and Fiona's Forest feel like they truly change time and have emotional resonance.Still most of this can be hand waved away by the limitations of the SNES. It's fucking insane SE never made a true spiritual successor. A 2d Chrono [Insert] game that ignored Cross and was just like Trigger but with 100% more content and better game design would make millions.
>>12066328JUST LIKE MY ANIMES
Shadow Hearts Covenant.
>>12063976Listen I know my fair share of morons that never played Mother but love it by proxy because they played Undertale. This isn't the case here, Chrono Trigger is pretty good even with outdated software and no mods for QoL.With that said I prefer breath of fire 2, a snes game that found itself in the GBA comfortably, If we are talking peak though I may have to go into how much I loved Imageepoch luminous arc1-3 and Stella Glow.
>>12067414
>>12062829It's the best 2-D flat-plane JRPG ever made, but that's it. >>12067416That's a good one as well.
>>12067410>Like most Square games, the special abilities outside of the ultimates are mostly worthless and the majority of the game is just spamming attack unless a boss has a specific magic weakness. This already sounds off. I remember using abilities all the time. Spin attack to hit/heal multiple targets. Combo fire spin for enemies weak to magic/fire.Though being a JRPG there's the option to spend more time grinding and playing inefficiently instead.
>>12067410Hi, Jarin.
>>12067602I think anon is talking about how you can cruise through 99% of combat encounters without actually needing to do anything besides spam attack.
>>12062829Not even the best JRPG on the SNES in 1995
>>12067954>I think anon is talking about how you can cruise through 99% of combat encounters without actually needing to do anything besides spam attack. That anon said abilities are worthless."You can play inefficiently" doesn't mean much when RPGs usually allow grinding and infinite resources.
>>12062829It's up there.>>12062910>>12064871Based.
>>12068020>You can play inefficientlyIt's not even that inefficient when you account for the longer animation times on skills. And he said outside of ultimates, and he's not completely wrong. Low level skills that don't target a weakness aren't so much better that it matters most of the time.
>>12067996What was then, Tales of Phantasia?
>>12067954>I think anon is talking about>>12068357>he said>he's not completely wrongAm I to believe you're not himAbilities that hit/heal multiple targets, possibly also targeting weaknesses, obviously reduce the amount of turns it takes to end fights, and reduce the amount of hits you take and the healing you must do. Not to mention abilities like haste..Now stfu already, you stupid monkey
I strongly believe that Dragon Quest 4 is objectively the greatest JRPG, especially if you consider the fact that it's an NES game. Give this game SNES graphics and music and change literally nothing else and it will be among the best SNES games, same for the PS1, etc. It just has such a fucking strong foundation and it's a 1990 game. Well maybe it's not THE greatest but if there is a pool of like 5 JRPGs that deserve that spot then it's definitely a part of it
>>12068412There was a PS1 remake and it looked like shit because it used the Dragon Quest 7 engine.
>>12068418Indeed there was, I think the DQ7 engine is charming. Most people hate it and the DS remakes of 4-6 though
>>12068404I'm not that anon but believe whatever you want.>he heals in battle in JRPGsAnd you're talking about inefficiency? Gtfo, scrub.
is Ys a JRPG? that game was pretty good
>>12068486Yes I prefer healing in battle, especially when I can heal multiple targets and leave the battle at full health.Pausing the game to heal through the menu is what scrubs do
>>12062829More like most talked about JRPG, stfu and play a new game already
>>12068431The DS games looked ok on the DS sized screen and they improved the engine somewhat to run faster and look a bit better, but the PS1 DQ7 and DQ4 remake were both ugly.
>>12067602You can use abilities to your hearts content but at no point besides extremely rare enemies/bosses are they necessary and the most effective way to get through the game is just mashing attack until you get strong area spells and start getting in fights with more than 4 enemies where watching Luminaire is faster than attacking. Unless you knew where fight triggers were and intentionally ran around them you would always be appropriately/over leveled for combat so there was rarely a need to think about it, for healing you could blast through 5+ encounters before using a tech from menu or just chugging any of the numerous healing items the game insists on dumping on you.Square just never had good combat design.
>>12066328What's with the klansman and dixie flag?
>>12068404>healing in combatlmao lolAlso healing increases the time it takes to finish fights and there's nothing that actually reduces the amount of hits you can take besides killing enemies faster. You sound like you intentionally use the defense command in battle, you absolute know nothing mongoloid.Weakness rarely matters outside of rare specific fights, and these are usually bosses, and during bosses you're just novaing every turn anyways.Haste tech is a meme, by the time you get it and start running into enemies that can survive more than a round of Nova Bursting with ultimates/vanilla attacks you'll have access to haste armor and will have found plenty of speed capsules and speed boosting accessories. And to have access to the Haste spell means sticking Marle in your party which cripples your offensive output because she's weak as shit besides her good magic duals negating any speed gains from it because you spent 1-2 rounds not damaging the enemy and are stuck with a mediocre dps character. The strongest uncapsuled characters - Chrono Ayla and Magus - all start with speed over 10 and will be fast as fuck anyways, Frog can hold the line until you get Magus, and Robo gets +3 to speed during the portion of the game you can farm enough speed capsules to max out 4 characters (which is also around the time you'll have full sets of haste armor/accessories) anyways. There's maybe 30-50 minutes of play time where hard casting Haste MIGHT have made some fights faster and you won't have haste gear but it all evens out due to the loss of damage output and having to watch the casting animation. If you're going to be a hostile retard, don't also be an actual retard who doesn't know what they're talking about.
>>12068404>healing in combat with techsunless robo or frog has a shitload of magic tabs, you're better off just using mid potions which they give you a lot of anyway. dual tech healing is just a waste of a turn when you can dual tech attack and heal with the third character. wish marle had multitarget healing instead of the useless life 2 because i love her dual techs with lucca and frog.
>>12069129>Weakness rarely matters outside of rare specific fights, and these are usually bosses, and during bosses you're just novaing every turn anyways.I guess you've forgotten about everything besides the endgame.Disregarded

Thought chrono cucks were annoying but grandia contrarians are worse
>>12062829Chrono Trigger and SMRPG are the chicken tendies of JRPGs. Not scaring off picky eaters doesn't get GOAT points
>>12062829No. It is Xenogears.
>>12062829Yes, it's a neat package of the best elements of the era, it's not excelling in anything specific, but everything is all-around good, very accessible and short enoughAlso, we won't ever get that kind of dream team behind another game
>>12072219a shit.
I feel like growing up with 5th gen and later JRPGs spoiled me on CT. Same with FF6. I didn't enjoy either of them as much story/gameplay/character-wise as FF7, being a late bloomer to the game having played it after FF10. That game hit me at just right age and I played FF9 and 8 first, both in that order. Even when I finally played Xenoqueers maybe 6 or 7 years ago I'm sure would've fell in love with it back then just as I had with FF7. Guess it's just one of those "you had to be there" moments. I think I would've liked CT more than FF6 had I "been there".Maybe a faithful remake would make me appreciate it more.
>>12072406>it's a neat package of the best elements of the era, it's not excelling in anything specificIMO that's where it excels the most. They made a concise, polished JRPG.Plus the combat, presentation and music are top notch. And man, the atmosphere..Yeah I'm thinking it was the best JRPG of that era. FF7 is the only contender. And compared to that, CT gives you power to change things. Change the future. And without random encounter padding. But now I'm just rambling on.
>>12072219Lol no, not even a top 20 psx jrpgs
It wasn't even the best JRPG on the SNES in 1995.
