Which one is the superior sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 1?
>>
>>12064189
The Sega System port
>>
I like Sonic 2 better, but CD is a great curveball for the series and really changes things up in a great way. Knuckle’s Chatoix is an example of trying to mix things up and failing terribly.

I actually like Sonic 2 and CD both better than 3&K, but its definitely not a bad game (or games) either. I know some people will disagree with that but I just felt they complicated things a bit much. All the new powerups, all the different types of hidden zones and gems, and the levels were getting a bit long, a bit like Metropolis Zone in Sonic 2. For some reason tend to I like my Sonic games simple and fast with a focus on physics and speed so I can go for high scores. But the more slowed down levels of the original like Marble or Labyrinth have their own unique charm, and I kind of want a game more in that style too.

For the 2D platformer Genesis games I’d say
Sonic 2 > Sonic CD > Sonic 1 > Sonic 3&K >Knuckles Chaotix

Personally I think S2 is a better S1 in every way but overall they played it too safe. I like CD in concept but the level layouts kinda don't work for me; something more open and big like S3 with better defined "speed" and "platforming" areas would have serviced the core idea better imo
>>
2, obviously.

Sonic's perfect mix was the speed and platforming of 2, while CD doubled down on exploration and puzzle solving.
>>
>the game with gaijin assistance was 20x better and completed development twice as fast

Aaaaiiieee!!

I've played CD multiple times and I just can't get into it.
Playing it like a regular Sonic game is boring and missing the point.
Playing it "as intended" searching the levels for stuff is a clusterfuck. Maybe if I played it as a kid and have everything memorized I would enjoy it more, but I didn't so I don't.

The art and music is good but it's not enough to save the game for me.
>>
>>12064317
I've beaten CD multiple times back when I played Sonic Gems Collection as a kid, but I don't think I ever got the good ending.
>>
>>12064189
Sonic 2 is better in every way, anyone who say CD is good, is mentally ill. The FMV was cool for the time, the CD music while good never fit the 16/8 bit era of Sonic Games.

Sonic Boom and Cosmic Eternity are cool though.

>>12064317
>clusterfuck
is a good way to describe the level design.
>>
2 no contest. The levels are actually polished and unique.
>>
>>12064189
The one you had, which was Sonic 2 because your parents were divorced.
>>
>>12064189
Unquestionably Sonic 2.
It does exploration better than CD with it's many checkpoint special stage entrances, without compromising on levels that are enjoyable to just play through.
>>
>>12064408
Sonic 2 was my first video game ever back in 1995 or so, and my parents are still married.

Even though CD also started development as Sonic 2, it eventually turned into a sort of "Gaiden", special luxury entry on the Sonic series, that plebs couldn't easily obtain.

Meme answer but there’s some truth here
2 and 3K were always so widely available on nearly every collection, while CD only really became available for most people on Gems Collection and that standalone port
Plus, 2 and 3K introduced Tails and Knuckles which have a lot more popular appeal than Amy and Metal
So people just grew a fondness for those titles and either never touched CD and parroted eceleb opinions on it, or played it super late and got angry that it took design philosophies more from 1 than 2/3K
CD is the best classic Sonic game without a doubt
The aesthetic is unparalleled and the exploration elements make it a much more interesting playthrough (you can do a standard run, a true ending run, a wild card run where you just go past or future at random)
Two soundtracks to choose from, both of which are stellar and varied
Tried something new with level themes that wasn’t just “le ice le fire le desert”
>>
>>12064673
>it a much more interesting playthrough
Yes CD is an interesting game, but that does not make it a fun one.
I honestly get enough of CD's aesthetic just playing through its levels in Mania.

1>CD>2>3&K for me
>>
CD isn't on the genesis, and is therefore not a good Sonic game.

yes, that includes spinball
>>
>>12064189
Different pieces. CD keeps a more sonic one feel and mechanics, but adds exploration instead of puzzle race levels. Sonic 2 builds on the main aspects of sonic 2 and adds more fluid mechanics and a fast paced level design. I like s2 better and I feel it excelled at evolving sonics core feel better than scd did.
>>
>>12064884
Spinball is a flawed masterpiece. Speeding up the CPU in an emulator makes it perfect. Such a great and unique game, feels like the 90s.
>>
>>12064189

CD sucks
>>
Sonic 1 :focus on plateforming in detriment of speed and exploration

Sonic 2:focus on speed in detriment of plateforming and exploration

Sonic CD:focus on exploration in detriment of speed and plateforming

Sonic 3&knuckles: perfect mix of what make Sonic great (speed, plateforming, exploration),no major weakness

I know it didn't hit it out of the park but I believe they had the right idea. A properly made Spinball 2(maybe on Saturn?) could have been a lot of fun.
>>
>>12064189
2 is frontloaded with the first two stages being some of the best Sonic stages. But CD, despite its pacing issues, is the superior game. I even felt that it was a bigger influence on the third game (which is perfect, by the way) than Sonic 2.
>>
>>12064189
2 is for normies
CD is for quirky chunguses
>>
>>12064189
Sonic CD, but only by a hair.
>despite 2 having way more cuts, the absence of CD's missing level is felt (game feels too short)
>2 generally has better bosses and CD has a lackluster finale
I like everything else about CD over 2.

You mean what basically bunks down to a literal nothingburger?
>>
>>12064756
Mania is shit though (and not retro)
>>
>>12067741
>2 is for normies
>not CD
CD is so fawned by lo-fi vaporwave zoomers, it's not even a joke.
At least 2 is just 1 but with more meat to chew on.

normie
>>
>>12064189
2 had better music and a cohesive level design.

CD music sucked dick and felt like a retard designed 3 levels per stage to be different
>>
>>12068447
>designed 3 levels per stage
That's exactly what they did.
>>
>>12064189
Sonic 2 and there's no question.
>>
>>12064189
2. CD's level design is a clusterfuck
>>
>>12064189
Great description. The levels are designed almost like a roguelike dungeon crawler, except there is no real loot worth exploring for. The past / future mechanic is largely pointless and skippable. Feels like it was designed to look impressive at Babbage's. I feel the same way about the levels in Chaotix too, outside of the annoying mechanics.
>>
>>12064189
sonic cd
>>
>>12064189
CD is the thinking man's Sonic game.
>>
>>12064189
I prefer CD because of the music and and special stages. Being able to go through time is cool. 2's half pipes can kiss my ass and I don't really like the stages after Mystic Cave, although Wacky Workbench kinda sucks too
>>
>>12067729
That would've been legit as fuck
