Exactly how much story is too much to disqualify it as a game?
>>
this feels like a loaded question, because while visual novels are definitely books and not games, i still enjoy them greatly as a genre, and ay of them still have game elements.

It's not about the amount of story but rather the amount of game. A visual novel with 3 puzzles spread over 12 hours? Fuck that , that ain't no game. If a game is stopping me every 5 minutes for more story but it actually has something to say and relates to the ludonic-events? Sounds fantastic sign me up

i use the amount of thearter kids, psudes & trannies that are drawn to it as a metric for how much story is too much story.

those faggots seem to be drawn to anything that either makes them feel smarter than they really are or involves a character they can self-insert as (and you can usually tell what character it is).

Well then I'll rephrase, where exactly does the value of gameplay lie?

>makes them feel smarter than they really are or involves a character they can self-insert as (and you can usually tell what character it is).
Sounds EXACTLY like Silent Hill 3.

>I let other people do my thinking for me
>But then I invert it to the negative so it's not too obvious

NTA but it's normal and natural to have your opinion of something lowered due to its repulsive fan base.

This is very spiritually and emotionally weak. Shit on bad fanbases all you want, it's deserved many times, but you should be intellectually and emotionally mature enough to judge a work on its own merits.

I like games that are pure games AND I like games that are more interactive storybooks. And I like games that are purely one or the other AND games that combine the two. But if a game has a shitty story that hurts the gameplay with constant interruptions, then it's a bad game. And if a game has shitty gameplay interrupting the story, then it's a bad game.

And they're all called games. Suspended was a text adventure game. Fans tried redefining text adventures as "interactive fiction" in the 90s (or if it was late 80s) to make it more accurate and the term did stick, but they're still games to most people.

It was Infocom in the 80s, it was right there on the cover of Zork I.
>>
>>12065341
Huh, my bad, I thought that started with the int-fiction Usenet group. Did anyone else call them that back then?
>>
>>12065370
it was kinda Infocom's thing for the most part, I don't recall any other publishers using it. But the fandom latched on pretty early, and rec.arts.interactive.fiction on usenet was the center of the community for a little over a decade until that broke up
>>
any amount of story is too much unless you suck at video games. been mashing buttons to get past dialogue since I was a kid, miss me with that gay reading shit
>>
>>12064901
Silent Hill 3 is pretty weak. Even before the remasters I've always seen people like 2 more.
>>
>>12065424
2 is better because it's a finished game. 3 got kneecapped by some focus group yelling
>WE NEED THE SH2 TIE-IN
>>
>>12065424
I mentioned 3 because of the 'self insert' aspect.

i do. the question was about how much story is too much story not how can you tell if a story is good or not. there are other tells for that (i.e. a writer, publisher, etc.).

i gave my metric and the fact that you guys feel personally attacked by my post kinda proves it and my point right while you project the very spirtural/emotional weakness you criticizes others for having.

>>12064901
it's easier to spot them in modern games but i'm not too versed on SH who's the self insert character there.
>>
>>12066082
>if you think my method of deriving my opinion is bad it just proves me right
psshhht. nothin' personnel
>>
>>12066129
facts don't care about your feelings buddy. i'm sorry this upsets you.

maybe you need to be more emotionally mature to not treat everything as a personal attack ;-).
